And "space port" is aspirational and optimistic and signals adventure and seeking new exciting destinations. Run down warehouse signals decay, obsolescence, and misery. Just slightly different vibe.
The “Architecture of Reassurance” versus the architecture of decline.

Why is everyone assuming this is Chapek? Chapek said make a Marvel land. This is what Imagineering gave us. Blame them.
Marvel was also involved in the concept, giving input and approval.

Eh... I blame Mr. Chapek.

Imagineering can design anything they want, and it can look gorgeous and lush and otherworldly. Have you seen the new version of Soarin' that just debuted this month at Tokyo DisneySea? It makes the DCA facility and queue look like an industrial storage yard, and makes the Orlando version look like a boring Midwest airport. Oh, wait, that's all WDI could give us in Anaheim and Orlando because that's all the money they had to work with.

I'm thinking Tokyo wins on this one. As it tends to do with every cloned ride they get from the American parks.

But Imagineering can only build what they are budgeted for. And Mr. Chapek gives them that budget. And then apparently Mr. Chapek even cuts the budget further after construction begins and removes all the entertainment and interactive stuff that WDI already went on record publicly stating that a project or new land would have. Because Mr. Chapek apparently knows better than the Imagineers what theme park audiences want and how to tell an effective story and IMMERSE you?

And so a Spiderman exit gift shop to the video game dark ride has to look like an oil change and brake repair place in Santa Ana?

Have you seen Galaxy's Edge or the Nemo ride in TDS? Budgets were not concerns for either of those yet they still fail.

Paris did have two concept arts and I wish they went with the New York City version instead of the industrial college campus everyone is getting.

It's obvious the industrial college campus is a much cheaper theme to pull off than some elaborate cityscape. Industrial college campus is also much cheaper than Stark Expo 2020, or pretty much anything that any Marvel movie has presented us with.

I wonder what happened to all the swanky concepts and big plans for a land based on the highest grossing movies of the 21st century?

Oh, I know... Mr. Chapek happened.

I've been on the Nemo ride several times in TDS. It's cute for what it is, a giant kiddy version of Star Tours to swim along with Nemo and friends.

But I haven't been to Japan in over a year, so what Galaxy's Edge ride do they have there? Are you talking about Star Tours?

I agree that he deserves most of the blame for all the lackluster projects since 2016 but is the Industrial theming the ONLY thing imagineers can do with the budget they get?

Did they have to to retheme TOT to like an oil refinery/ warehouse/ power plant? Chapek May be pinching pennies but from what I understand these projects still cost quite a bit.

Will Spider-Man be better than that respectable looking shooter at Magic Mountain that @lazyboy97o mentioned only cost 15 million?

The imagineers deserve their fair share of the blame. How about SWL? The streetmosphere being cut isn’t the only issue. I think they missed the mark in more ways than one.

I mean Galaxy's Edge here in California. Despite its massive budget, it falls short. That has nothing to do with the budget cuts of the land but rather the boring ride.

All true. But it's been almost two decades since we've had someone like Paul Pressler to shout at our computer screens over. I kind of like blaming Mr. Chapek for all of these misses and under-performances. It's like the old days. PRESSLER!

Plus, Mr. Chapek has that rare ability to stick to his approved PR script and yet still come off as totally disingenuous and blandly corporate and simultaneously slightly clueless. That's a personal gift that can't go unrecognized! :D

@TP2000 that Soarin queue in Tokyo looks great by the way. The OLC just does things right. They start with the idea that they want to give the guests the best experience possible like Walt did. Stateside, we get Chapek starting with the thought of “how much money can we extract from these suckers for the least investment possible.” Or synergy taking priority over good theming/ aesthetics. Obviously putting imagineers at a disadvantage but not at all absolving them from the bad results. In short, stateside the parks are just an extension of the movie studios where in Tokyo it doesn’t feel that way.

A lot of Paris also had an autocad-like leak of the building facades. That’s not exactly meant for public consumption (the facade for the gift shop).

Budget is not the problem. Walt Disney Imagineering is given ridiculous sums of money. Large projects like Galaxy’s Edge are allocated a single project that it is up Walt Disney Imagineering to property allocate to meet the program. A revenue generating table service restaurant was cut because Walt Disney Imagineering couldn’t find the money for it in the $1 billion at their disposal. Things like the characters are a little different as most of the cost is carried by the park as an ongoing operational expense, but it shows a failure of communication between the designers and the operators who will ultimately be responsible for maintenance. Someone should have known that streetmosphere has a long history of being an easy target to save costs.

The goal hasn’t changed just because those in charge aren’t going towards it. Unless they tear down DCA and start over, it will always be a theme park focused on California’s history.

My first time at DCA was after Carsland so I have always thought they should’ve changed the name. It made sense when it was about CA but now it absolutely isn’t.

I'll go ahead and say it: Hogwart sucks. I'm not criticizing the craftsmanship of Universal or their product, but the world of Harry Potter is stupid. Dumb book series and dumb movies.

Did you ever read the books? I was doing a post-grad work/study in Europe and I mocked my classmates endlessly for reading the books while we traveled. What grown up reads a kids book?! Then one day I was sick...I was grumpy with nothing to do and I was given the first book to read. I fully expected it to be childish...and I promptly ate my words. I think I caught up with the series by the time of the final book and immediately read it as soon as it came out (I did not attend a midnight party or anything, I still had my decorum). I completely understand your scorn IF you have never read the books. Was it already uncool for your generation? I can say that my modern era kids LOVE Potter and it’s unversally loved by all their friends. As always the books are of course superior to the movies.
