AVATAR land coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

A project like this that is so early in development will only be handled at the very top of the company, and those people don't talk. The leaks occur when you start bringing in outside consultants and contractors.

Yea, you're probably right about that. I still liked the "whoa" moment I got when I first read the news here no matter how it happened :)

I imagine that there were some concepts put together by Imagineering to present to James Cameron though, don't you think?. I know the start of construction is still over a year away, but I imagine some prelim work on what will be included is done. I realize there is a lot more work/details to be figured out, but I would think by now they have a basic outline of what the core elements of the land will include.

I guess Staggs wasn't stretching it when he posted to the Disney Parks blog that exciting things were to be announced for WDW in the coming weeks to months following D23.

Did I say anywhere that people HAD to like it, or enjoy it? People have been complaining that Animal Kingdom is only a half day park and we get an announcement of an amazing land and people just complain, complain, and complain.... If people really like Universal that much go there and the rest of us will have shorter lines. :sohappy:

You do realize that you just contradicted yourself. If people are complaining about the announcement, doesn't that mean that they don't like it? Are people not within their freedom of speech to disagree or complain (however you care to phrase it) about the addition of Avatar land. You do realize that people are not complaining that SOMETHING is being added, but rather WHAT is being added? I also want to see additions to AK, I just don't feel this particular addition fits as well as other things.

So tell me, how can I not like this announcement yet not "complain" about it as you imply is possible?

I would think the opposite. Looking at the environments he has to work with, and the budget and people involved, I would think this would be an amazing opportunity for him. As a creative, if this doesn't get his juices going, he's in the wrong job. I think he'll do an incredible job on this and will be fully into it as always.

I remember him saying a few years ago he would really like to work with Peter Jackson and bring Lord of the Rings to DAK because he loved how detailed the world and mythology was. I suppose this is the next best thing.

An Avatar based land likely increases the possibility the park will stay open at night for more days of the year. I'm guessing they are looking at the CMM area so they can keep the park open.

If this was announced for Universal some people here would be announcing the demise of WDW and how it was about to be sold off in pieces. I guess this pretty much ends that baseless rumor.

Wow! This is shocking and exciting news! Adding AVATAR to Disney's Animal Kingdom is probably the smartest expansion Disney has ever done. I cannot wait to see the world they create! Animal Kingdom desperately needed something like this.

LOTR/The Hobbit would have been a much better choice for DAK.

Ewwww

I couldn't stand that movie! Why would they build out something so bizarre? Well good luck... I will take Animal Kingdom off my yearly "must do" list. Sad news for me today.

This is awesome!!!!

Sure, its not "pure" Disney and first and foremost, Disney created should always be THE way, but it works here in a park like Animal Kingdom. Like Star Wars worked. Anywhere else in Disney or any other park in WDW, it would not work. But in AK, PERFECT fit. AK explores different worlds and here we can finally bring the Fantasy aspect to the park. Perfect partnership for the Animal Kingdom Expansion!!!

I have to wonder though, much like Potter in Universal....what happens in say 30+ years when/if the partnership runs out? I guess just re-theme it....!

This type of response simply defies logic. Everything you love and hold dear about Animal Kingdom will be as true 5 years from now as it is today--nothing (or very little) is going away or being replaced. Why would you skip a park when you can just ignore the part you don't like?

What about adding something to something you include on a "must do" list, would make you not go, for heaven's sake? It's not like Africa or Asia are going anywhere . . . . .

No one is going to make anyone go into the area . . . just go enjoy the things you do like about AK!

Hey, I usually avert my eyes whilst passing through Chester and Hester's, but the fact that it's there won't keep me away from Kilimanjaro Safaris, or any of the other great things I love about the park . . .

its a stupid record to be honest. The larger the market (bluray market had increased over 5 times the size between releases) the fastrr andlarger the sell through will be.

avatar is nothing special .it just hit at the right time

Then why did it also break the DVD record, which didn't see any substantial jump in ownership since the saturation point has long since been reached?

Yeah, all parts of the WORLD, not some far off distant imaginary planet set in the far future.

Well.

Let's, for a minute, assume that the Yeti is in fact mythological. This is part of the park, and the only major complaint I've seen about it is that the animatronic is broken. We can also include the Beastly Kingdomme plans, which are pretty much unanimously praised in the fan community.

These animals are not on this world. They are culturally important in this world, but they do not physically exist.

The same can be said of Avatar, no? A collection of culturally significant creatures that exist only in fantasy.

If Pandora doesn't fit Animal Kingdom because imaginary creatures have no place there, then Beastly Kingdom and Expedition Everest do not belong either.

And let's face it. Animal Kingdom is not just animals. Those village themed areas in Africa and Asia? Yeah, I don't generally see many animals there. There is a bigger thematic force here than just animals, and Pandora fits the bill for something that represents conservation as much as anything else. And then there are the mythical animals present there.

Are people actually posting that because an "Avatar" land is coming to Animal Kingdom, they will stop visiting the park altogether, even though it used to be their favorite?

Unbelievable.
