AVATAR land coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

Just to offer a counterpoint...

For all those saying this belongs in EPCOT, you're saying you want to see a massive, dense rainforest taking over a section of EPCOT?

This is an outdoor land, not an indoor land. If you want to make it indoors, your transition has to be through extremely thick vegetation and an exotic natural setting. Where would you like to transition to that from in EPCOT? The message is right, the environment is right, and the environment is filled with modern fantasy animals.

But what you mentioned, dense rainforest taking over a section of EPCOT was proposed at one time.

Indiana Jones is a movie involving nazis where they find an artifact that causes their faces to violently melt away.

You were saying?

Come on, you know ripping out a guys still beating heart and showing it to him before casting him down into a firey pit is totally not dark, kid friendly Disney.

Great news!

Wow...if I was a a Disney exec this thread would absolutely convince me never to check fan boards. I can't believe all the negativity. I don't love the movie but it's certainly better than the Star Wars prequels or Transformers. A great movie does not necessarily lend itself to a great theme park attraction. Avatar is perfect for a theme park. It presents a beautiful land with fascinating creatures and incredible action sequences. The possibilities for an E ticket are truly exciting. I think if fits in AK at least as well at Beastly Kingdome does. I love AK but I admit that it is lacking in total attractions, restaurants and dark rides. The addition of Avatar could address all those. It's the highest grossing movie of all time. Everything James Cameron touches is successful so to think of how he is directing two more movies and will be working with WDI gives me a lot of confidence. I would love to see a Star Wars or Middle Earth land but this news is nothing but positive and exciting. :sohappy:

^I agree. But the #1 rule of the interwebs is to complain, and complain religiously.

-Complain when we do not get an announcement.
-Complain when we get a BIG announcement like this.
-Just complain. It's what the keyboards are for. www stands for whine, whine, whine. You get it?

But I am totally with you on this. Avatar is going to be amazing. The beauty of the film will certainly be a field day for WDI, and it's theme will... oops, I'm starting to sound too positive for the boards. Better stop before being labeled a troll.

Let's recap from the various big city newspaper articles on this;

Avatar Land Coming to DAK
Additional Avatar Lands/Attractions at other parks later, per legal agreement with James Cameron

  • DAK Avatar Land Budget = $500 Million
  • Scale/Scope of Project = Cars Land, 12 Acres
  • Land comprised of one E Ticket, and two smaller rides, plus shops/restaurants
  • Construction begins in 2013, opening in 2016 at earliest or 2017 at latest
Wow! I may have to put Avatar on my Netflix to see what this is all about; I took a pass on the movie originally as it seemed like Hollywood's typical Saturday Matinee Shlock. Interesting that they couldn't pull this announcement together four weeks ago for D23 Expo.

Where else could an Avatar Land go easily? Personal opinion here based on existing theme parks...

  • Obvious land available at Shanghai Disneyland
  • Big chunk of expansion land at Tokyo DisneySea beyond Port Discovery
  • Walt Disney Studios park in Paris could use this expansion, desperately
Those are thre three easy ones. It gets murkier and less easy for Hong Kong and Anaheim. There's space in Hong Kong, but how does the theme fit? There's space in Anaheim, but it would go in the big expansion area between Fantasyland and Frontierland, and the theme gets weird although the trees and vegetation are already there in that area. I can't think how Avatar theme would ever work in the expansion area at DCA next to Cars Land. :veryconfu

There is no way theis will be going to DL for the same reason Carsland is not coming to WDW.

Have you broken the news to Al yet? I feel sorry for whoever gets stuck with that task.

WAY TO GO TDO!!!:sohappy::sohappy:

You are being silly and your arguments are beginning to fail.. It is conversation of the PLANET not ANIMALS... Avatar's message is conversation of their home PLANET...

Fail how? none of my arguments have even been countered properly. If you read the dedication it was all about the animals, not the planet, for that you go to EPCOT.

where in the entire dedication to DAK does it say all of the planet? and even if it did, it would only further detract from Avatar's message because it would then narrow it down to just earth.

Strongly disagree...if this big announcement was for a Cars Land at DHS, I wouldn't be so uneasy right now. I'd be really happy because I think it's a more promising concept.

Cars Land at DHS would just be a clone of what we can see at Disneyland Resort, with its Eticket being a rework of Test Track which we already have at Epcot. This entirely new project for once gives WDW something absolutely unique and could go where no theme park land has gone before.

I know it might sound stupid, but just spit-balling, why not turn the train to Conservation Station into a "ship" to Pandora, and replace Conservation Station or put it somewhere else, people don't want that train ride to go to CS, but they WILL for Avatar. If that's not possible, just make it similar. Close over the track, make it look like space (with the new tech. we're talking about) and take people over. And also make sure to take away visual distractions in the skyline so you get the sense of being "transported." Also, I think it would be pretty amazing to have the land glow with "life" at night, like in the movie...

Can't happen. I've read that Planet Watch contains essential infrastructure (animal care facilities), and thus, can not be easily removed. As for utilizing the train to access Pandora, can't happen. The train probably can not handle the volume that Pandora would demand.

It makes more sense to either make use of un-used land (like behind Asia) or land where there is little that is irreplaceable (Camp Minnie Mickey, which only needs a move for Festival of The Lion King). I'd opt for Camp Minnie Mickey, so as to keep an absolutely gigantic expansion plot open for future use.

What ever happened to Grandma Willow from the short lived Pocahontas show at the AK? maybe that could be part of the new avatar area? Maybe Festival of Pandora?

I agree. A whole land dedicated to conversation is a bad idea... :drevil:

Anyway, I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, but I think this had a ton of potential. As others have mentioned a lot of possibilities for attractions and scenery. I am really looking forward to seeing the concept art and which direction they plan to go in.

Good day for WDW fans I'd say.

Animal Kingdoms signature centerpiece & icon is a tree. A tree of life. That is all.

I haven't had time to read through this entire thread but what is the source of the $500 million budget and 1 E and two smaller attraction info? Is it speculative based on Carsland? Do we know where this is going? Will FotLK survive?

Even with all those questions, this is certainly a bombshell, and I assume this info just wasn't ready at D23. I was indifferent towards the movie but the visuals within the movie are absolutely stunning. If these can be replicated it should continue the beauty that already exists in that park. Color me optimistic, albeit cautiously optimistic.

Thrilled about this announcement! The film was visually inspiring and sparked my imagination.

Can't wait to see this expansion in AK.

This is great news.

Well this is out of left field....not sure what to think. I believe it could turn out well, but it is an unfortunate sign of the times that they were willing to spend this amount of money on a big expansion and it took a licensed property the likes of Avatar to make them pull the trigger. Wow.
