Me too. All he saw was the dollar signs from ticket sales of the film and in his world he equates More $ = More Popularity. And to a certain extent, there's some truth in that. But not always ... and I would argue that in this particular instance, the film made the amount of money it did (and had the amount of ticket sales that it did) because it was the first time a sci-fi action film was designed for the express purpose of being a 3-D movie ... not because of a fondness for the story or characters. I bet it never occurred to him to see how much merchandise sales and representations in other media (novels, comic books, music, television, cartoons) were generated by the film.
I bet he was shocked when they announced Avatar and the collective fan reaction was "Meh, we don't really like Avatar - it's not Star Wars."
I find it odd because it's the exact opposite of what Cars was (a film that sold an average amount of tickets but had a terrific run of merchandise sales) - and Iger seems to love the Cars property.
