So then, by that thought process and 20 years of change in the media, Disney needs to not only ride the wave, but create it as well. There's no wave to ride. Do you think there's going to be a big push to get Avatar back into the mainstream?. What was the original movie rated - as I'm sure kids aren't too aware of the movie ??) Are they going to Disney Channel it up!! Have a Na'vi kid-friendly nature show or something? Phineus and Ferb travel to Pandora?
They have three solid years to market the hell out of this.

Same here. And for the first time ever, because of Disney's current trends, I have begun to consider selling my interest. I'm not there yet, but the very fact that I have lost the enthusiasm that I had when I purchased into DVC makes me sad.

There is no official name for it yet but I think it's likely to be refered to as Pandora not Avatarland.

When I compare DAK, DHS, Epcot - attractions (rides and shows only)
DAK: ITTBAB, Primeval Whirl, TriceraTop Spin, Dinosaur, Kali River Rapids, Everest, Nemo, Flights of Wonder, KS, Festival of Lion King (10)
DHS: BATB Stage Show, ToT, RNRC, Great Movie Ride, Studio Backlot Tour, MuppetVision 3D, TSMM, Star Tours, AIE, Indiana Jones Stunt Spec., Lights-Motor-Action, Voyage of TLM (12)
Epcot: Captain EO, Journey into Imag., Maelstrom, Mission Space, Seas with Nemo, Soarin', Living with the Land, Spaceship Earth, Test Track, Ellens Energy Adventure, Grand Fiesta Tour, Impressions de France, Reflections of China, O' Canada, American Adventure (15)
These three parks are all half day parks - at this stage in their life cycle they should all have double the amount of attractions that are currently located in each park.

I would rather have Avatarland than Star Wars land. Even though I found both movies "ok" (not worth a second viewing), the visuals of Pandora are incredible.

Anyone remember how people were complaining about the Carsland expansion for DCA before it was completed? Carsland doesn't fit the theme of DCA and doesn't belong. Why base a land on a mediocre movie? The land will only appeal to little boys. Etc.
However, once it has opened it seems like there has not been enough praise for the land and all these complaints have died away. It ended up working out. I have a feel Pandora will end up the same way.

I was looking for a place were Carsland was discussed right after the announcement to see what the reaction was, but I haven't found a place yet. There are a few threads about it here, but they are only a couple posts in each.
Like others have said, It doesnt matter what the IP is if the attraction is a home run. With that in mind, you can only hope TDO swings for that home run and not just a double.
But TDO does exactly what I do. My wife leaves for the day and leaves me a honey-do list with big ticket items like 'clean the garage', and 'pressure wash the back patio'. I'll end up just vacuuming and lighting a scented candle right before she gets home and distract her with a cute picture of the cat. I value engineer my chores!

I am so glad they are building this family experience.
I certainly can't wait to hear what a ride based on a movie with a foul mouthed poorly written script, predictable preachy Fern Gully plot, blatant violence, open sexuality (though alien ponytails), and shallow characters that snorted too much glue in kindergarten will turn out like!
Snarking aside, I am curious how they will swing the merchandising part of this. I mean, does anyone remember the massive influx and lasting popularity of Avatar toys and merch?

I am excited about Pandora. What I find interesting is that people that hate on the movie in their posts still comment that the movie was impressive from a visual standpoint. That is what I think this land will boast above everything else, its look and feel. If it is expansive in size and the boat ride is maintained and done properly this should be a great experience.
If WDW said it was adding a new stage show at its park based on Avatar, then I would completely understand the outpouring of antipathy. That being said, this is not the scenario that is happening. I have seen Joe Rohde's work at Aulani and Everest and I have hope that his involvement, along with Cameron's team, will help make this one of, if not the most, visually stunning lands of any of the Orlando Parks.
This, in conjunction with the other additions/changes to AK, will make it enjoyable for an entire day. I have always liked this park though. I go to it for the animals as much as for the rides. My family would arrive at opening and stay until 6 or 7 and never ran out of things to do. This will just make it that much better for us.

Yeah, I know what you mean about merchandising, this is something that Disney is horrible at. Look at their signature character, Mickey, it's almost impossible to anything at WDW with his image on it.

I can't envision navi plush dolls. The robot suits and helecopters would be neat toys, but they didn't sell massively at Toys R Us, why would they do better at Animal Kingdom?
The ride is a no brainer. They'll throw pretty much every cheap effect at it they can, I suspect. But, I am truly curious about what they plan for merch!
