AVATAR breaks ground

On the Walt Disney World facebook page I would bet it is running 70% against in the comments section. Why build an attraction with this narrow appeal when you are sitting on a gold mine of Star Wars, Pixar, Indy?
like I mentioned earlier those comments mean about as much as the 29000 likes on the parks blog

and like George mentioned if you go to the avatar face book page this announcement is incredibly well received

I'm going to add a pre-disclaimer to this post about how I really am not for "avatar" as the choice to build a new land on...

Now that I have that out of the way..a few amusing observations:

First...I do enjoy having read TONS of posts on here about people making cracks about how this would never happen until they break ground. Now they did, and some of those are now complaining that they did? I get it..you're not happy about the decision to use Avatar for an expansion..but its done...and its something new thats coming. Try to remember that each time you post about how nothing is getting built. Just because its something you (and I) don't like, doesn't mean its not something being worked on. I already know the standard reply along the lines of "But its a lazy expansion, you pixie dust snorter! This isn't what we or anybody wants!". I myself will reserve my judgement until I go there myself, just as I have with potterland and carsland.

Second...Regarding how long this has taken to get off the ground. I said it before previously but it was predictably ignored by those who are the loudest anti-progress soapboxers. Disney did make a mistake here, But the mistake wasn't slow development, it was a VERY pre-mature announcement. Lots of you here like to talk about how fast HP phase 2 is getting built, but do any of you recall how LONG before they actually broke ground that it was rumored to exist? They tore down jaws and started construction before they even officially announced it! I remember reading (now pretty accurate) rumors about what was coming to potter 2 a VERY long time before they even brought in the first bulldozer. If they had announced it when they first started designing it, such as Disney fumbled in doing, it would have seemed a lot longer. Disney jumped the gun big time and rushed out an announcement when all they had was a new "deal" and a couple of concept drawings to share. For anyone, designing a new ride/land is a long process, one that takes years regardless of whos behind it.

And finally...To those who are upset that this is coming before Star Wars land. Yes, I feel your frustration and agree with you. However, they didn't own Lucasfilm until after this project was under way. Does that mean that I'm happy about it? Not in the least. I think that if they knew they had plans to buy Lucas (which I suspect they did) when they were penning the deal for Avatar, waiting and using THAT instead would have been a far wiser use of resources.

There is a little panic.

~May the Force Be With You~
No, that's investment. And what looks to be truly wondrous rides and attractions coming very shortly to their current parks. And there's another one being built in Beijing. That's not panic, that's seeing the theme parks as a growth business.

This is closer to panic (from your own article):

"Outside the CEO suite and the PR offices, many Disney cast members are eager to fight back against Universal's efforts."

Because if they come anywhere close to the stunning concept art...then it wouldn't matter if they called it stinky pete land

Look it's happening, and it'll be great. I'm fine with that. Yes the movie's plot was m'eh yet the visuals were outstanding. My biggest problem with the entire concept of devoting land, time and especially $$ to Avatar is that Avatar does not, nor never will have the "nostalgia" factor. A main factor people go to Disney for the magical nostalgic warm and fuzzies. Parents bring their kids there because their parents brought them there and so on and so on and so on. Every bit of the reasons why people go to Disney is to feel like a kid again.

Hopefully the land will be visually awe-inspiring and fun - but when you get down to it, not matter how well executed, it's going to miss that Disney nostalgic magic.

I think the key is TODAY's Disney 1990's Disney could be trusted to come up with something AMAZING with whatever they started out with .

Today's Disney has the inverse Midas touch by which they turn whatever they touch to c--p.

Yes, but unlike some people around here I am not going to judge the quality of an attraction before we even know anything about it. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt until I see something concrete to judge.

No I just think people are being overly harsh towards something that isn't even fully built yet. Cant you people have faith in Disney? I guess not.

To Celebration Place,

Actually we DO have faith in Disney, That Disney will value engineer and degrade attractions so they are no longer to the standards Disneyland set nearly 60 years ago, That Disney will choose cheap over immersive every time. That Disney will simply buy IP instead of creating new things people never thought of before. That Disney's standing on Wall St is far more important than Guest experience.

Last comment from me for a bit....Question for anyone in this thread that feels this is a great property to go forward with. How many Avatar items did you see for sale at Christmas? How many did you purchase for your family? How many items of Star Wars/Pixar did you purchase for Christmas? Which has more potential to make a profit/draw guests for Disney if it is turned into a ride?

On the flip side - when was the last time you saw "the twilight zone" anything in the stores? I know it's only one ride vs a land but I'm sure there were plenty of nay-sayers "you're making a thrill ride based of a 1950's black and white television show...ok there buddy!!"
