AVATAR breaks ground

I think flying over Pandora is most likely going to be a simulator type ride utilizing screens. Because it's Cameron I assume in 3D. These are just assumptions, but I don't see how they could effectively simulate flight without the use of screens. The biggest question is will it be a stationary theater (similar to Soarin) or will there be some form of additional movement either up and down or possibly from room to room. I think it's highly unlikely to be a FJ type motion with a combination of screens and tracks, but I think there is some middle ground between Soarin and FJ that could be the plan. If you incorporate a quality 3D film and an additional range of motion then it has the potential to be pretty good as long as it doesn't make me puke.

I think people took the leaked HVAC plans and assumed the 4 theaters are Soarin theaters so it will just be Soarin 2.0 with a different film. That is a possibility, but the height of the proposed structure (based on the model and height balloons used) would imply that the theaters would at least be taller than Soarin so there would be room for up and down motion as well.

I know this has been posted before, but something like this is possible and could even incorporate some movement around a theater and/or physical sets as well as screen based interaction:

Full Ultra HD digital film on curved screens at 60fps and vehicles that have more motion than Soarin may be a similar experience to the Epcot ride, but will definitely be a huge step forward. Considering the secrecy surrounding the design of the project they may have some surprises in store for us.

So, Avatar plans were leaked in Oct 2012. They showed some Soarin' like ride with four theaters and part of a boat ride. It has now been taken as gospel by some that these are the final plans and what will be built.

I'm just pointing out that in Oct 2012, Avatar was far from finalized and confirmed. We had lots of reports from after that point that the project was close to being killed and that Cameron was ready to walk away. We never got any sort of "official" confirmation about Avatar still proceeding until the Anaheim D23 in August 2013, which had a little Pandora tease. And then some more information from the Tokyo D23 in Oct 2013.

My guess -- and this is personal opinion so grain of salt and all that -- is that Cameron didn't agree with the Oct 2012 plans. He wanted something more/different... groundbreaking. If Disney got him to come to the table and sign off, it's because he got something that he wanted. I think it is extremely likely that the plans evolved between Oct 2012 and whenever they were finalized and green lit (if they've even been finalized). Like many projects, though, I doubt that old plans got completely scrapped -- they probably got adapted into new designs. So, while the plans might still be a "flying on a banshee" simulator and a "boat ride", they might be markedly different than how they were originally conceived. Just like POTC isn't a walk through in a wax museum.

IIRC, there were reports that Imagineering and Lightstorm have a specific building with tight security where they are working on Pandora projects for DAK. It's being closely moitored to avoid leaks. What would be the point if all they are building is a modified Soarin' and a re-skinned IASW?

We'll see once we finally get details of the attractions, but I don't think it makes sense to rely too heavily on blueprints that date to when the land was still very much in limbo and a work in progress.
The more complex and customized development is, the more time is required to build it. Therefore, these "early" leaks are for a very complicated and customized development that needed to be planned and engineered that early on in order to make the 2017 opening date. I firmly believe these leaked plans are what's coming. Of course, the finished product won't do these schematics any justice because all the schematics show are floor plans and room dimensions. They do not show story, effects, ride elements, and so on. In other words, I believe these are real, but they don't give away any of the surprises in store for us!

Avatar flight ride is to Soarin', what Rockin Roller Coaster is to Space Mountain. Similar concept different result.

That's a good way to put it. It will be similar to Soarin, only in that they both simulate flight and suspend the guests in front of a large screen.

Avatar will be 3D, video will be clearer, screens will have more depth and immersion, and the ride carriages will have the ability to tilt left, right, front and back. Guests will also board the ride carriages on multiple levels, instead of at the ground level.

Yeah, that is odd. Also I don't understand the even exchange between "pavement" and buildings, unless this is a loose definition of pavement.

....

What if the net change of zero is mandated, either by the Water Management District, or by the philosophy of the park? In that case any addition of impervious surfaces would require the removal of an equivalent impervious surface.

Does anybody know if pervious pavement systems are considered "pavement" for water management purposes? If so, then perhaps they intend to replace standard concrete sidewalks with pervious concrete (or something similar) to the extent required to have a net drainage effect of zero?

Probably not a mandate, but more likely just a convenience. If the net change is zero they don't have to modify the current water control system and it will be easier to get an approval.
