AVATAR breaks ground

Even if we did know for sure about a Soarin' mechanism, that doesn't tell us much. After all, there are other ways to be innovative besides a ride system.

It doesn't matter how innovative they are with the window dressings. Guests will remain in a large room in front of a screen the entire time. If history has proven anything it's that these types of rides simply don't stand the test of time. Star Tours had to be updated. Body Wars closed. Back to the Future became The Simpsons. Hanna Barbera became Jimmy Neutron which then became Despicable Me. After less than 10 years of being open, Soarin' already seems dated and people have been begging for an upgrade. There is nothing wrong with using next-generation screen based technology on a ride but not having any physical movement through a show-building makes a big difference to riders. Deep down we all want to GO somewhere when we get on a ride and not just be given the illusion of going somewhere.

Really? That seems very narrow-minded.

Haven't seen the movie. Probably never will. But I can't wait for something, ANYTHING, to be added to DAK.

I think Cameron and Rodhe will give us something worthwhile. Very worthwhile.

I agree.

I've never read any HP books, or seen any HP movies, and never plan to....but we went to Uni in 2012 and spent a while in HP Land. It was fantastic. I can't ride anything in the land :hungover:, but I didn't avoid it or dislike it because of the IP it's based on.

I've never seen Avatar, but I can't wait to see the land.

Well, my vacation dollars just got spent and not at Disney. Going to Europe instead. And I have been to WDW in 5 years.

Me, I'm going to Universal next spring or fall. Had planned to spend a couple of days at WDW. Where, once again, I will skip going to AK.

Now if TDO built a really great Lion King attraction, complete with dark ride, in AK, I'd go visit there again. That's what it's going to take - Disney lions, not Cameron's blue kitties.

You're right.
People have abandoned Soarin' in droves!

The dystopia in this place drains me; I don't think I can take another three years of it.

I had to look up dystopia. It sounded like maybe something you take after you eat spoiled meat and get the trots. I was way off, but at least I learned a new word today:).

I hate to break it to you, but it's not gonna end in 3 years;). There will always be something new to complain talk about.

They have indeed abandoned it... at California Adventure where there are a plethora of rides to choose from. People can't abandon Soarin' at Epcot or they will have nothing to do all day but drink wine at World Showcase. Midway Mania also rarely has long lines at DCA but at the attraction-starved DHS people stand in line for upwards of 100 minutes. Soarin' Over Pandora will no doubt have incredibly long lines as well when it opens. It's meaningless when a park is starved for capacity.

that's why it looks like double capacity to soarin

You know what's funny?
So I am thinking that everyone believes Disney did absolutely no research when deciding on this land, along with its attractions, etc? Probably a good idea just to let it open and see what happens.

I don't line up for Soarin' because there's nothing else at Epcot for me to do. I line up because it's my #2 favourite attraction out of all four parks.

Clearly, you're over it. No worries. That's one less person in line ahead of me.

After more than a dozen (10-14 day) trips to WDW, this is the year we hopefully make it to DLR for the first time. I truly look forward to a 10-minute line for Soarin' there.

Cheers, it's all good.

I think it is meant that the parks will be open past 5 or 6 pm with Avatar, night time show and parade. That's likely what they mean by being a full day park.

Will there continue to be a parade? That's the big question IMHO since it's been rumored to be on the chopping block.

Avatar + continued parade + night time show would be a good start to making it a full day, but it still needs a couple more rides on top of that. Not E-tickets necessarily (couldn't hurt) but a couple C- and D-tickets, especially of the mild thrill/family friendly variety. Even just some more flat rides at Dinorama or on Discovery Island would help.

I'm avoiding it like the plague once the blue kitties infest it.
