Avatar 3D ride news

They really should just call this thing Soarin' over Pandora. That way they could really save money on having to manufacture attraction-specific merchandise and just sell Soarin' merchandise there.

That's would be pretty lazy though and knowing TDO, I'm sure they'd love to find the lazy way to do this

I always thought it would be cool to attach ride vehicles in a baby mobile configuration and spin them around. Then each vehicle could also tilt/rotate/ascend/descend. too bad they couldn't do this and create a swarm of dragons or whatever they're called in avatar. Above and below you would be other guests.

That actually would be a pretty cool ride system.
And Disney already used mobiles in the The Little Mermaid ride, so they are clearly 'pro' mobile ;)

This is accurate from what I'm hearing. Although I don't know exactly how similar the ride will be to Soarin', I do know that the proposed ride is a kind of suspended simulator and is already being tested.

What I find interesting is that the Avatar project has its own private building at Imagineering headquarters, due to James Cameron's insistence for more privacy on the project. The building requires key-code access preventing even most Imagineers from entering the building unless they're assigned to the project. Apparently the project has already accrued a small fortune in development costs.

Seems like overkill for what essentially is a duplicate of technology developed 12+ years ago.

This a million times over. I really don't get it. If the leaked plans come to fruition this could be another huge missed opportunity for WDW, especially if it is the anchor attraction for the land. Either way, I'll try my best to reserve judgement until something actually opens, as difficult as that may be....especially since it appears we'll all be waiting quite awhile. 2017? Really?

Although this attraction's been compared widely to Soarin', the load procedure implied by these blueprints would be compared better with Universal's The Simpsons Ride.

I like TSR, but they really need to be aiming a lot higher than that.

Here we go again. Walt Disney World bad - Universal Good no matter what. We know so little about this ride and everyone is being so negative. I love Souring and if Disney can improve on this and make it better, I want to see what they can do.
I don't really think them making a Soarin 2.0 is the problem. It's more so that this ride is expected to be the anchor of Avatarland. They could and should do much better then that for such a hyped expansion

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Rhode has implied this will be rougher than Soarin'. And honestly, I don't see a reason to complain. If we're getting the animatronic dark ride that we want, it's about time Disney gets its first massive 3D simulator. That's something Universal has done that Disney has not. And there's no guarantee this is going to be a copy of any ride system we've seen before. Animal Kingdom has nothing like this. I'll welcome the attraction with open arms(and wings!).

What's hypocritical is that the people who are dismissing this attraction before they even experience it (not saying this thread in particular) are the same people who praise Dispicable Me and say it's the best thing ever, despite the fact that it's a simple re-do of an old ride. Would I like to see Animatronics in this? Of course. But still, just give it a chance.

I guess its cheaper to show a 3d movie then to actually create show sets. This won't do at all. imagine if the harry potter ride was just the little film tidbit parts. Rather disappointing no?
You mean like Transformers, The Simpsons, and Despicable Me?

Camp Minnie Mickey hasn't even been leveled yet and we're already panning one of the yet to be built attractions? Seriously? o_O
I very critical of wdw as of late and I agree. Do I have faith it won't be really awful? No. I would loved to be proven wrong but it doesn't need to be good. They have proven that soarin is good enough (even though i wont ride it anymore) and that's the bar they have to get past. The lines for an awful attraction are over an hour, that shows that most of their clientele do not care so why spend 80 million when 30 will do..
