Another elitist comment from zippy the pinhead.

Uh, no, you couldn't rent an entire home or timeshare off-site for the same price. Not unless someone wanted to stay in the same trailer park as you.

Zippy? Hah. You are so funny. I'll wear that nickname with pride to the Elitist Pinhead meets.:ROFLOL:

Now, moron, I did indeed rent a timeshare that was about 1600sf, full kitchen, two baths with jacuzzi tub, dining room, patio and resort facilities akin with what Disney offers (and could sleep eight comfortably) for $79 a night ... about five miles from WDW. When I get my rebate from hotels.com it will wind up being $62 a night.

Try staying at one of the standard rooms at a 'value' resort during 'value' season for that rate.

I'd say a lot of pinheads will be staying at AoA and spending vastly more for inferior accomodations under the guise of being on property and having pixie dust and towel animals when they could rent wonderful places just minutes away.

Now, why don't you go crawl back under that rock you came from?

Wow!

One person can't have an opinion about something's aesthetics? Sorry, I didn't get the MAGICal memo.

~GFC~

Nope, in order to be allowed to voice an opinion you apparently have to swear an oath declaring your undying love and support for Disney's down market offerings.

Walt was a man of "the people" (or perhaps "those" people) you see, and clearly established that his vision was to make things as tacky and garish as humanly possible. Another little known fact: his lifelong dream was that all menus be homogenous and that the food taste like manure. And while we aren't quite there yet, I'm confident that within the next decade Walt's dream may be fully realized.

Some of you are going to ________ your pants reading this shocker but at McD's I can buy a double cheeseburger and fries for $3 and at WDW the prices is $8.59! I know I just can't believe Disney would charge more for something I can find less than half the price off site. :lookaroun

Off topic, but how exactly does one know what manure tastes like without having eaten said manure at least once in one's lifetime? :ROFLOL:

To the poster on the first page who said he would never forgive (or forget) that they did not finish the classic years theme....

Pop Century (loved staying there) is an off the shelf drop it anywhere in the world hotel theme. Don't get me wrong, it works, but there is nothing "Disney" about it (except Lady and the Tramp).

In the classic years section, what would be the large icons? 20's maybe a tommy gun, for the 30's they could have put it in the food court area, then the long lines waiting for food would make sense. The 40's could be something WWII ish. I am also sure that we all would have connected to the 1910's.

One of the redeming qualities to Pop Century is that we can walk through the place and feel some sort of connection with many of the icons. My kids didn't know what a floppy disk was in the computer area, I had a big wheel and a rubics cube. However staying in the 50's building, made me feel a little like we were in the unthemed part of the resort. Could you imagine the entire resort having that same disconnected feeling.

One other point, unless you are over 50 (at least) if you try to think about 1920-1940, do you see it in your minds eye in color????

So what you are saying id this is a failed concept because all the other hotels are timeless and can be refreshed around the theme but this hotel will be dated and need knocking down in 40 years as no one will connect with the earlier decades as those people will be dead. Unlike the Poly and contemporary which are none time specific and have lasted with a refresh on the hotels theme.

Well I guess you are right but it is odd Disney have been shortsighted in this concept. Maybe they have created the AoA resort with a view to eventually replacing the theme of Pop to a more timeless one in the future.

The thing that I don't like about that new resort is that to me it isn't really a themed resort, it's just decorated.

I know it is the same with the other existing value resort, but somehow this seems to be the trend with Disney resorts now as those Pirate/Princess rooms at the moderates have the same problem to me. The original resorts transport you to a different location: the Polynesian Islands, a lodge in the mountains, a safari lodge in Africa, mansions along a river in the South etc. The create a new place and everything fits that theme, your room looks like it might be a guest room in a mansion, a safari lodge etc. You can pretend to be somewhere else.

With the value decorations you are not going anywhere, you are at a motel in WDW, it's just a dressed up variety. And the same goes for those Pirate/Princess rooms. I know that I can avoid them by just not booking them, but I still don't like them. They are overly decorated and I think a Pirate themed room should not be located in a building themed to a picturesque Caribbean village, but maybe in a fort or even in a ship! And a princess themed room needs to be in a castle, not in a Southern mansion.

Well it is coming along. It is a good thing that the forgotten hotel will finally get finished. The question is what will disney do with pop.

Great post.

Yep. And one I somehow missed during my 'away' time, I guess.

But I certainly am troubled by all the Disney BRANDING and TOONING that is going into resorts I once loved and stayed at frequently because they transported me to another time and place and not into a Disney commercial.

TRFKaDL is all about the American South in the 1800s and Disney princesses, even the newish Tiana have no place there beyond the gift shop.

CBR is all about the islands in the Atlantic, not about Aussie toon fish or Captain Jack.

Even sticking Obvious Mickeys into so much of the carpeting and furniture has gone from neat to obnoxious.

Gee, yet another reason to NOT give Disney my money!:xmas:

I'll never forget filming the abandoned legendary years and was so excited for a new part to be built in the future...then they went and did this...I love the resort, but they could have built it else where and at least finished the Pop century theme!!!! It will always bug me!!! But i am so excited to visit this resort! It's going to be so weird finally walking over the brigade and not having to stop anymore!

Unfortunately for you, I'm afraid the more likely scenario is that Pop! is going to be turned into Animation resorts as well. I wouldn't be surprised if this concept is a MAJOR success.

I agree with what you're saying about the pirate rooms in the Caribbean Resort. That's an odd fit. But these are VALUE resorts. They aren't going to spend the cash to make the building look like a pirate ship and then charge only $99 a night for it. Personally, I don't think full-price large size resorts for any of these properties (besides maybe CARS) would be successful.

In this case, "theming" is decorating. Personally, I think it's a fantastic idea and one that I hope they expand on.

No, what he's saying is that there really isn't anything special or unique about the Pop concept.

You say 'only' $99, but do you know what you can buy (hotel wise) in O-Town for less than that?

Beautiful timeshares, vacation homes and 4-star resort hotels (with TRUE 4-star service unlike Disney) via Priceline.com.

They can talk about MAGIC and being on property (gotta love those convenient buses), but at the end of the day, the value resorts are simple motels with TINY rooms that worth about $50 a night in real world terms ... and because of the amazing deals you can get in the O-Town market (I had an 1800sf timeshare villa that I paid $62 a night for when I was up for a week in October) they really are only worth that if you have young children. :xmas:

But then he is wrong because Pop is very unique, show me 3 hotels off property anywhere is the world with a similar style. Hotels like wilderness lodge, beach club, yacht club, grand floridian, Polynesian, Animal Kingdom Lodge are all copies of something that exists or has existed.

Unnecessary Characters

I understand the effectiveness of synergy, but I don't believe that characters need to be everywhere. Someone before stated that Pop Century isn't Disney because it has no recognizable characters except for Lady and the Tramp, but I like it that way. I want to see the characters in the park (where it makes sense for them appear), but I don't necessarily want that from my hotel. Maybe I'm in the minority.

They've added characters to the carpet at the Grand Floridian. Why? Even if they didn't finish the Legendary Years, I would've like to have seen a more original concept or theme for the hotel. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't actually affect my love for Disney and by no means would it affect me planning a vacation as I would probably stay at one of the other hotels, but I'd personally just like to see them step a little more outside the box.
