Competitors beat them to the punch. 4G? Larger screen? The processors in other phones that roll out well before crApple delays their's to have these conferences. My statement was more geared directly to computers. AS I have said a few times, maybe more than a few at this rate. I use a 4s and are happy with it. This 5 is underwhelming, lacks features, and driving purely off hype while the 5s (or whatever it will be called) will be the cream of the crop in regards to broPhones.
As I said in my post, Apple delayed their 3G and LTE (4G) implementations each by one year. They did so to allow providers more time to roll out their networks in more areas, to ensure a sufficient supply of 3G and 4G radio chipsets (some of which were in relatively limited supply at the time of the respective iPhone releases when compared to the volumes Apple was looking to buy), and to be able to improve the battery life when using these broadband cellular technologies. The huge knock on LTE/4G last Fall was how it sucked battery life. And it did. That's a negative user experience Apple wanted to avoid.
As for the larger screens, that's an issue of philosophy. Apple has decided that there is a maximize screen size that allows for the easiest one hand manipulation across a wide array of people's hand sizes. For example, my wife has pretty small hands (at leasy compared to mine). There's no way she could thumb tap the top of the screen on a phone with a 4.5" screen while holding it in one hand. Will Apple lose customers because they currently only offer a phone with a 4" screen? Probably. But not enough for them to make a usability sacrifice that they think is more important.
As for the iPhone 5 being all hype, I guess you're missing a few enhancements over the 4S (which I also own):
- Full 4G/LTE support.
- A larger 4" screen.
- Benchmarks are showing almost triple speed improvements over the 4S (double over the iPad 3).
- Support for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wifi frequencies, improving range and throughput.
- Double resolution front facing camera.
- Faster docking connector.
- Two-thirds the thickness and three-quarters the weight of the 4S.
- Improved screen techology - faster and more accurate touch sensitivity, improved viewing angle.
I do find it interesting that you seem to be a huge Space Shuttle fan. While subject to much political interference and design compromises too numerous to count, it was an absolute marvel of engineering. But the program as a whole was a massive disappointment which never came close to the launch frequency or safety projections that the program promised. The specs looked great but the program underdelivered in the most disappointing way.
