I have a good feeling mkt and now are going to post... :animwink:

Anyway, go for it. Consumer Reports has stated that Apple has had the best relyability and the best consumer help.

I'd wait till the end of the month when the new iMacs will be announced to get one.

I have a PC at the moment, but my next computer will defintely be a mac. For me, there would be no compatibility problems really, as I use very few programs, and all the ones I do use have mac compatability. I think it's also the fact that I have always had a PC, and think it would be good to have a change - and mac os x looks vvv nice :D .. Actually, the macs look good full stop. I'm guessing that the PC will win this though, as there will be a lot more PC users than macs posting.

Good luck with choosing

My experience working in an IT support capacity is that PCs and Macs are both unreliable and as likely as each other to drive their users. The only real difference is that if you critisise a Mac, many of the users go ballistic. Critisie a PC and most users say "Yea? So what?"

Personally I say take what you can afford - this has to include access to software.

DonickCo, it's funny you post this question, because I was about to ask the same thing. I bought an HP Media Center m260n in November, and last month I had to have it shipped to HP because it was having some problems (I've been working on my laptop since). Yesterday, Circuit City (I bought it there and they had to ship it out) told me that HP said the computer could not be fixed and that they were going to give us a full refund. Since I can get a new computer now, I'm really leaning toward getting the G5. However, I'm not sure if I can make the jump to Mac. For those who have experience with the switch....is it hard?

I'm not a fan of HP computer kit, so I'm not too surprised you had problems. I can't vouch for the US market, but if it's like the UK market buying from a chain store will cost you a lot more than buying direct.

Whilst they are far from saints, over here I usually recomend buying direct from Dell or Evesham to freinds who were going to go into Dixons group stores or a Time outlet. I have tried some of the cheaper brands, but had nothing but trouble from them. Anyone from the UK reading this AVOID OMNI DATA SYSTEMS - bunch of heffing dishonest crooks, they sold me a pile of junk and I had to fight for two months to get my money back. So the other lesson I learnt is make sure you pay with a credit card that can arrange charge back if the company arses you around.

Any machine you finally settle on, be it a big brand PC, local built PC or Apple will have a fair chance of falling over and being a pain to repair.

I just ordered a PC... but i ordered mine custom from a guy who builds computers. I would suggest it to anyone because this way you can get what you really want or need instead of cookie cutter computers. Technology frustraits me though... when Joel bought his power book, 3 weeks later the new processor came out. and I cant even get my PC for 2 weeks because some of the technology hasnt even come out yet (i mentioned windows xp extreme in another thread...i dont even know what that is yet lol) this is what frustraits me about computers... in about 6 months you'll be behind in the technology

Once you have bought your machine STOP LOOKING AT WHAT'S IN THE SHOPS. It will only drive you crackers with "Oh, if only I'd waited anther two weeks".

There were insufficient choices in the poll: mine is I have owned Apple computers since 1983 and would'nt even remotely consider anything else. Barnum: its a shame you are a PC type, because I truely like your posts - but in this you are wrong. I have to use PC's and Windows at work, and they are awful. From my first Apple IIc to my present Dual Processor G5, my experience with Apple has always been fantastic. How many times have I had to call Apple for tech support in all that time? None - everything I have installed and used has simply worked - no fuss, no bother. Number of times something has failed - once: the power adapter on my son's iBook needed to be replaced. I challenge anyone who uses PC's to make similar claims about reliability and ease of use and adding hardware (Be advised - I've got tons of stuff connected to my system). Apple gets it right, builds it right, and has the best operating system there is. Proof? Gates' recent preview of Longhorn - hey look: It's Just Like Mac OSX! Another interesting thing: This site looks better and updates better in Safari (Apple's Web Browser) than it does in IE (Okay, I admit: I check at work).

Thanks for the compliment, glad my past ramblings have been appreciated

Actually I do not like PCs either and I am dumbfounded that Bill Gates got as rich as he did selling a product that does not work. I found out he got around that by not selling the actual operating system, but by selling a licence to use it. The licence works fine even if the operating system causes multiple reboots.

It's just that I'm not convinced Apple is any better and that for your average Joe the access to to PC software is much greater than with an Apple.

I know of one office where they kept track of the problems caused by Mac and the problems caused by PCs. As a percentage there was very little difference between them.

To be honest I don't have much personal experience of using Apples - I kept getting ticked off every time I tried to click on the right mouse button

I *LOVE* my iBook G4 and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world (except for maybe a PowerBook or a G5 and 30" cinema display). Macs are so much better than Windows computers, in my opinion. I've been using Windows since 1992, and I'm a recent Mac switcher (October 2003). Windows is cranky, and it makes me cranky. My iBook just works. Get a Mac; you won't regret it!

The real question is whether you desire to go with closed architecture (proprietary) or open architecture (non-proprietary).

The Apple systems are entirely proprietary. As a result, they are VERY expensive for what you get. Also, you are always at the mercy of Apple if you need either hardware or software upgrades or repairs. You can't go to Sam's or Wal-Mart (for example) and purchase a second hard drive for your Mac. You can't build your own Mac because Apple controls everything. Also, you can't buy a Mac except via Apple!

Some PC systems are proprietary as well, however most are open architecture. This means that you may use hardware and software made by various companies. As a result, you can put together a superior system at a LOW cost because you can shop the competition as you so desire. You can build your own system or have it built for you. Or you can buy a system from Dell, Sears, Wal-Mart, Sam's, Circuit City, Best Buy or thousands of local computer shops. Competition has made the PC the KING!:king:

The real bottom line is that 98% of the world uses PC's (most with Windows OS) while only 2% use Mac's.

You may as well Nick. I mean, you're already in one of the 2 biggest cults in the US (VW Drivers)... a Mac was bound to happen.

Just remeber, you shall never truly earn true geek status till I see a linux box in your possession

Yer damn right id chime in on this thread..

..but unexpectidly..im going to be as fair as possible..

From many many years of experience, ive never really found much reason to stay with a mac. Theres more to a computer than how it looks, and how stable it is. I mean honestly, how great is a computer's uptime if theres few things you can do with it. The cost of a mac is also a bit un-attractive. They really dont cater to the "budget" buyer, and everything is "in house" so there are few ways to catch a break. There are upsides. Macs DO last forever. I have an old mac from about 7 years ago that still works amazingly well for its age. (without an upgrade). I still activly do use a mac on accation (tho its a powerbook), and I can tell you that its nothing short of a full on headache...but then again i dont have many nice things to say about PC laptops either.

As most of you know, im a PC pusher. I try my best to show people the many advantages that I see to keeping with the more popular choice. Aside from a FAR larger software selection, you also have so many options and customizations to fit your budget. Stability with the new versions of Windows have only gotten better (which even I am amazed to admit), and most PC makers have learned to make their computers look "pretty" to compete with one of the perks most mac users boast. Downsides to PC, which isnt a FULL downside, is upgrading. Needs to be done often (id suggest twice a year for a power user..but you could go longer as a casual geek). It gets kinda pricey, but then again...it IS cheaper than buying a whole new system.

In the end, the decision comes down to what you are using the system for. Problem with these types of debates are a large bias...which i am also guilty of. What was said above holds true tho, mac users seem to be far more defensive towards their weapons of choice....which sparks so many interesting "debates". *shrugs* I cant be of much more help...id say revolve your choice around your budget :)
