Since Disney's purchase of Lucas Film in October 2012, the speculation began that the Lucas/Star Wars presence would expand in the park. Episode 7 is set to be released in 2015, and with new films expected every year thereafter, a greater theme park presence does seem logical. Bob Iger was quoted as saying that a great theme park presence will occur.
At the 2013 D23 Expo, Disney featured a display of multiple crates with Star Wars references for a project called "Orange Harvest". The assumption is that this is the internal name for the development of a Star Wars themed land in Hollywood Studios. This expansion has also reportedly overtaken the Cars Land rumor as the primary upcoming projecting in Hollywood Studios.
General information and timelines includes:
- An announcement is expected at some point in 2015, with the likeliest time being one of the two events:
- Star Wars Celebration: April 16-19th at the Anaheim Convention Center
- D23 Expo: August 14-16th at the Anaheim Convention Center
- Site prep is expected in 2015
- Major construction should begin in late 2015 with the bulk of the construction taking place in 2016.
- Phase 1 is expected to debut in 2017.
- The primary plan includes Star Wars Land taking over Echo Lake. It would begin at or around Hollywood and Vine and extend to the current location of Star Tours. This will be a street that connects Hollywood Boulevard directly to Star Tours with many side streets.
- The budget for Star Wars and other Hollywood Studios enhancements has been reported to exceed $1 billion.
- Elements from Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be included, and the emphasis may be on the new Star Wars content.
Initial attraction rumors include:
- The anchor attraction is expected to be an Endor Speeder Bike attraction that will replace the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. Details of that attraction are below:
- 50 guests at a time per dispatch, 2 dispatch areas
- 3 minute ride time
- It is expected to be a simulator that utilizes Disney's variant of the CAVE ride system. For more information on this system, refer to this MousePlanet article.
- 180 degree 3D projection domes will surround the guests
- Capacity around 2000 guests per hour
- An X-Wing Fighter spinner attraction would be a kid friendly attraction. The wings of the fighters would be able to move in flight. This would likely be built in the area current occupied by the Jedi Training Academy
Other components that could be included are as follows:
- Reports of components include the Death Star, an Ewok Village, the Mos Eisley Cantina and more.
- The Jedi Training Academy would move indoors into the Sounds Dangerous (or other) building and potentially include a Yoda animatronic.
- Additionally, they would remove the "movie set" theming. The Ewok Village and AT-AT walker in front of Star Tours would be replaced with full size versions.
- Imagineers are pushing for a large streetmasphere presence with interactive components built into the surroundings.
- It is also rumored that Star Tours will receive new destinations in 2015. The new destinations are expected to be from Star Wars Episode 7.
- Hollywood & Vine is expected to remain
- Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular is expected to remain until at least 2017-2018.
