Anyone heard the Rumor Disney bought land in W-NC?

The question is:

Is Disney buying just to get in on the real estate market or are they considering building resorts in every state (and territory) of the United States?

This topic was discussed on Lou Mongello's WDW Radio Show, about Disney building mini-parks around the U.S. I believe he said it was a great idea.

I disagree with him.

The reason why some of us go to WDW is because we don't go to Central Florida every day. It is out of the way, so Disney gets us to go.

If Disney was "just 'round the corner" wouldn't that kind of have less magic than saving up and getting to take a flight or drive all the way down to Florida to be there?

From talking to some friends and family members (so take it with the grain of salt it is) the Disney Co. apparently bought some land south of Asheville in Transylvania County (if you're from the area it is just outside of Brevard). Now, this isn't for any regional park, or DVC, or anything like that. It is just a company buying some land, the current idea is that they're building condos/townhouses. And I'm willing to bet the people who will eventually live in them will have no idea that there is even a tie to Disney.

I was born and raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I live in a little town called Cashiers which is right beside another little town called Highlands. Our area is a major tourist destination due to the beautiful scenery and numerous golf courses. We have actually had quite a few celebrities vacation here over the years. While I could totally see Disney persuing a Hilton Head type of resort in the mountains of western NC, I highly doubt it would happen.

I'll be there in July; it's a lovely area, and already has a few resorts. However, I've been before, so know to bring my own wine and beer. ;) (or drive "over the hill" to Highlands)

I can understand why Disney might be interested in building a resort in this area, as it would give them an opportunity to offer skiing in the winter, and cooler temperatures for golfing, hiking, horseback riding, etc in the summer. Add in fall foliage, and it's a year round destination.

As a local who does vacation in Western North Carolina and Eastern TN whenever we can(also should say this area is where a lot of Floridians retire to), I would love it if Disney built a resort up there. My kids grew up going to WDW on weekends, but in the 1990s we started heading to Asheville and then on into TN to DollyWood for regular vacations. They hated the country music, but loved everything else about Dollywood because it was totally different than Disney and Central Florida. Area around Asheville is beautiful
