Any word on the Tiki Room?

I was wondering if any CM's had news on the progress at the Tiki Room. We're visiting 8/8 to 8/12 and we're hoping for an early opening, I'd love to see the semi-original version again.

All they're telling CMs currently is 'late summer'. I'd say August 16th is pretty reliable, though. :) They might do a soft opening, but there's no way to know for sure!

You know, I was just in Disneyland and saw the show there, and yes while it is a classic and it is responsible for so many other great things at the parks, all I thought while watching it was,
"Geez this is not playing well to today's audience."
I don't quite think that Sammy Davis Jr. impersonations are quite as clever as they were back in the day.
However, I do say this in total respect to the show, I enjoyed it for what it is. It seems to me though they need to try to create a new show, which clearly hearkens back to the spirit of the original but is new. All -in-all make it new, just not in a way that belittles or annoys as the Genie in California Adventure's Aladdin show said "The Tiki Room reject" does.

Yeah he actually said that, got some applause too.

I completely agree. The "Under New Management" version just wasn't any good. The best parts of the show were the ones that were closer to the original and all the animatronics were singing.

I just want something that will keep me engaged, pay tribute to Walt's original vision, but allow for new generations of kids to enjoy it. Is that too much to ask :p

With any update or refurb it has to keep kids interested so that they will remember it fondly years from now and bring their kids.

I leave on Thursday for Orlando and I get August 15th, I am just hoping they get a soft opening or something because I would love to ride it at least once.

.

First let me point out the one small itty bitty part that I agree... the star impersonations (sammy etc) are not all that exciting to me either.

For the rest of your post I STRONGLY disagree.... The Tiki Room is a wonderful show and has been since 1963...returning this beloved show to the MK (where I first saw it literally weeks after it opened in almost 40 years ago! Gosh I AM getting old!!!!! :( ....! ) is a wonderful idea and if TDO does it properly will be a wonderful asset to the park.

As for the "Genie" in DCA's Aladdin show making that remark... I have a sneaking suspicion that the same guiding force that inserted that particular line may have also been "responsible" in some fashion for the "Under New Management" craptacular we were stuck with almost 13 years......

The Enchanted Tiki Room is not for everyone..... No Disney attraction is intended to be as such either.... one of the great aspects to visiting WDW, DLR, etc is that Disney has something for everyone.... if the Enchanted Tiki Room is not for you, then thats OK with me...go to an attraction that is something you enjoy...meanwhile other people (like me) who enjoy The Enchanted Tiki Room will be heading on over to see Jose and his flock!

Actually in the last years there was a strong revival of Tiki Culture and Polynesian Pop and there are whole new generations experiencing and exploring this style of the 50ies and 60ies, the style which was part of the lifestyle of the parents or grandparents. I am not a senior citizen, I am a thirtysomething and I consider myself definitely a part of "today's audience" and still I enjoy the 1960ies flair of the original show.
I cannot await the reopening and the first reports about the new "old show".

For me, going to the Tiki Room is like watching a classic Disney movie. Sure there is talent and music that calls back to the time it was produced, but obviously that doesn't take away from the movie. (Jungle Book being a great example.) Tiki Room is one of those things brought to life.

From what I have heard it might not make the reopening date and since there really hasn't been any new info released I wouldn't be surprised. My source said it's possible it won't open until mid September. I guess we have to wait and see. Fingers crossed for mid august!

Totally agree and in the same bracket. Theres also quite a few books out there about tiki culture in both retro looking back styles, and of today.

Well said sir! :sohappy: I have a sentimental attachment to the Tiki Birds as well since it was the first attraction that my family saw on our first visit back in 1975. As long as this "reminiscient of the original" show is done well, I will be one happy bird lover. I wouldn't have minded if they had "tweaked" the show a bit (perhaps changing out the impressions etc.) but the UNM was a kick in the teeth. I'm looking forward to seeing the results for myself next January.

I do agree I just believe that there is a way to combine the Tiki aesthetic in a new show, that is true to the original but is more contemporary and advances the technology used within it. I do myself love the whole Tiki movement, and am exceedingly glad that it is making a comeback. I certainly understand the sentimental value of the original, perhaps it could just be the insertion of new numbers into the existing show that can be switched in and out.

I think the celeb voices being impersonated are Bing Crosby, Pearl Bailey, and Maurice Chavalier.

Just curious... what exactly was the context of the line Genie used? Was he referring to lago as "the Tiki Room reject"?
