That is the problem with memories, they tend to get distorted over time. Especially childhood memories. There were a lot of "bad show" things in the 80's and 90's. Many things that were downright filthy, AA's that didn't work, rancid ketchup at Cassy's, the smell of garbage rotting in the Florida sun wafting all over Main Street. Colors were dull, but, because of smokers the streets were always clean because it required an army of custodians to keep the cigarette butts along with all the other stuff picked up and out of sight. Still I walk around WDW all day and almost never notice any of the things that are mentioned as being the norm on the boards, like papers on the ground. We used to see that too and we used to pick it up and throw it away. We don't do that anymore, we are obsessed with germs and the thought that, "it's not my job". Back then we had a ride that completely went against the backstage exposure obsession. We had the Skyway were you could see all the show buildings, complete with roof top debris, AC units and so on. Today it's OMG we can see the Swan and Dolphin from Epcot. We are seriously screwed up.
Technologically, advanced for those years, but, by todays standards, antiquated and out of belief simple and backwards. Attitudes may have changed, but, it wasn't all Disney Management attitudes that changed. We have become a world of entitlement. Back then any little thing that was done was amazing and considered magic, now you have to literally pull a water buffalo out of a top hat to impress anyone. We are spoiled and cannot see the forest for the trees.
In short... it has been happening since the beginning of time. Even the Garden of Eden was infested with sneaky snakes. We have a distorted idea about how much it should cost for a days entertainment. That standing in line is unacceptable and instead of taking in our surroundings and making an effort to interact with other travelers we keep our noses stuck in our electronic device of choice and complain about having to queue up in order to see things. Life goes by fast enough, yet everyone seems to be trying to rush it through.
To me it's not about "bad show" it is about "bad audience".
