Another Disney "princess" movie....

The next Disney animated features will be:

Winnie the Pooh, 2011
King of the Elves, 2012

No princesses, but a king. And a male bear.

The next Pixar release will be Cars 2, for the boys. The release after that, Brave in 2012, will feature a princess. A female lead, a first in Pixar's twenty year history.

Haven't Disney Feature Animation openly said they're not making princess movies anymore? Personally, I welcome the fact that Pixar are moving away from their male dominated films.

As for marketing only being allowed for female films I'd have to disagree. All the Pixar films have been well marketed as have the male Disney franchises. One of the big differences has been the brand image. People associate Disney movies with kids and fairy tales, both of which have longstanding associations with females rather than males (rightly or wrongly).

And Tangled was the 50th Feature Animation and while I think that it has been overrated somewhat, the film itself didn't seem to have any male/female appeal issues. My Dad was laughing hysterically the whole way through!

A female protagonist somehow makes it a princess movie? I don't follow. Unless you know something I don't, I hadn't heard that brave was about a princess.

That's a fantastic point. Think about it, if Disney made an animated version of King Arthur for example and they marketed it the same as they did for princesses they'd be nailed hard over and over about how sexist it is and how it would need to be changed especially in this day and age.

The Sword and the Stone.

I think you missed the "in this day and age" part of his post.

I think the genetic pendulum appears to be swinging back towards the Y-chromosome. It'll be ok.....

Maybe not soon enough?

This is a common statement on this board and among many families we know....

.... DS is not into all the princesses and pixie dust ... it is common complaint everytime we go that there is just not enough for "boys" character experiences..

I think that has more to do with what the "boys" enjoy more than the character meet and greets being offered.

And what that has to do with Disney movies.....

The movies are pushed hard in the parks, with merch and meet and greets, and in many cases entire rides and areas built. (Tinkerbell, Mermaid, etc...)

I agree that the Princess thing is being driven into the ground a bit much. You can make a good Disney fairy tale movie without Princesses. Look at Pinnocio, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan.

Conversely, so are characters from other movies: Alladin, Pooh, Tigger, Jafar, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc....

Merchandise from TRON, Marvel, Phineas & Ferb, Pooh again, etc....

But, people will always seek a reason to complain, and search out the lowest-hanging fruit to go after when they do.

Great advice to all the parents here with sons who don't enjoy the princessfest.

Tell the little fellas to stop being such little pixie dust spreaders.

I must have missed the TRON boutique, the TRON cycle ride they're building now and the TRON play area with meet and greet.

Well, there is the whole ElecTRONica thing going on. And rides don't just pop up out of the cement; just because there is not currently a TRON attraction does not necessarily mean that there won't be. That will probably be determined by the DVD/Blu-Ray sales of TRON and TRON:Legacy, as well as the reaction to the new series.
