Initial box office results have been disappointing per analysis of Wednesday's $4.7M opening. The film is now projecting at an underwhelming $35M opening weekend performance.

Let's hope it's a sleeper hit.

I would think Box Office Success is going to drive this attraction one way or the other. If it is a huge huge success and they think they will do a 3rd movie I think we get more.

The movie is a long term draw. It is not expected (by Disney or otherwise) to have a huge weekend, but chances are good it could challenge (or even soar past) the record for most domestic box office by a movie that was not #1 on any given weekend (if it is not #1 in the 3rd or 4th weekend, which is possible but not probable)

It may take some awards for it as well for them to go all in on this attraction. I know Poppins is a legendary movie but kids today have no idea about it so it needs to connect with this generation I believe.

Mary Poppins is definitely possible, but I think if a new attraction were to be added somewhere it would be in the Germany Pavilion. They already have the room from the previous scraped project, I personally only spend a few minutes in the Germany pavilion, and think it needs something to spice it up. Ok, back to Mary Poppins. Especially if Mary Poppins returns does well in theaters it would be more likely, but a loch ness ride that seem 0-.01 chances of that happening

Anecdotes mean little, but I still found this funny. My four month old is apparently obsessed with Mary. We sometimes like to keep a movie on at night, especially if he is having a bad night. One particular night he was having a rough time. Put on Mary Poppins, and he couldn't stop starring at the screen (pretty sure it was the music). It was more drawn to when Mary sang, he liked Bert too, but when he talked he would become restless. We have used the movie a couple times now, and each time, he just seems so fascinated when Mary sings (really...a 4 month old?!?). He hasn't been this....captivated?...by any other movie. Need to try Sound of Music...

I think it's cute they want to see if it's popular or not. I guess the long-standing success of Mary and the original movie isn't enough? It's so silly to me. This is a no brainer dark ride. A new movie wouldn't even have been necessary in terms of an attraction. The original was perfect for one. Shame they seem to be missing the boat once again.

Are they struggling with what version to go with? I'm just so confused at why they can't make a decision.

To follow-up on my first post, I suppose YMMV when it comes to interpreting box office results as Variety is describing the $4.7 Wednesday box office as "magical", stating it could lead to a $75M weekend performance.

We'll have to wait and see. Regardless, I'm excited to watch it when I get the chance :D

The area you are thinking about in the Germany pavilion is being used for existing pavilion functions. The area in the back of the Japan pavilion is being used for maintenance shops etc, but what's in there could easily be relocated making the overall box available to house an attraction. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Mary Poppins Returns

Critics:
  • RT Recommend: 79
  • RT Critics Score: 73
  • Metacritic Score: 66 (like the early RT scores, this should go up since they only have a small number {47} of reviews calculated thus far)

Audience:
  • RT users: 78 (this has jumped up 6 points in two days) with 1,889 reviews
  • IMDB users: 76 with 1,075 reviews
  • CinemaScore: A- (ouch... not good news for huge profits in the long run, though, like other Disney sequels, nostalgia makes up for that. Cf. Cinderella and the PotC franchise)

Overall... not going to be the smash hit like the original, but, well enough liked to be considered successful. Needs about $400 worldwide B.O. to break even. Has an excellent chance of being profitable in the end, even if it only happens in the post-theatrical window.

It's one of those interesting cases where the box office doesn't accurately represent the popularity of the franchise.

If current Disney needed Pooh to prove its popularity by making huge box office numbers, we'd never get a Pooh ride.
Christoper Robin and Winnie the Pooh (2011) were both very mild successes, yet the character is infinitely popular.

I'd say the same applies to Mary Poppins, in a smaller scale

Interestingly, Christopher Robin movie just about broke even at the worldwide B.O.

But I'm sure it will do well in the post-theatrical window and keep the franchise beloved by many.

It could pick up as the weeks progress. And next week more folks have off than not. I doubt the majority of America is rushing to the theater on a Wednesday to see Mary Poppins, as much as I love the original. I'm not really surprised by this or by Christopher Robin's performances. I don't think they'll be seen as failures though.
