The problem is, and I hate the concept (and the show it is based on) to begin with, is that it by nature has to be a sanitized version of the crap that FOX peddles on national TV.

You aren't going to get a Simon-like judge scowl and shred some tone-deaf, overweight teen from New Jersey who gets up on stage to belt out 'I will always love you.'
... can you imagine the legal implications (well, there shouldn't be, but rest assured in our lawsuit crazy world there are and there's likely pages of things that Simon and Randy and Paula would say that these 'judges' are not allowed to under penalty of job loss... so it isn't real. Hell, Millionaire was more realistic than this is setting up to be.

(WDW1974 who sure is glad Studio 1 is sitting empty while the Monsters Hanger coaster Imagineers twiddle their thumbs ... and we get to keep riding to Endor with P-E-E Wee!)

Why's the teen gotta be from NJ? LoL...

Ohh, in true Idol fashion, if the females have no talent, just wear a bikini and you are in like Flynn...

Do you know if they used guest contestants or were they still CMs?

It was both CM and guest. From my understanding it's is open for CM to audition through the end of the month. Guest are also welcome to audition. Also, I heard the level of talent today was underwhelming since most CMs didn't know about it today and the majority of people where kinda just pulled off the street.

There is a review on Screamscape from a CM and it was terrible. They said there were 3 singers then the crowd sat through several videos of past Idol winners and a promotional video advertising DHS sung by Jordan Sparks. It was described as "30 minutes of your life you won't get back".

I was at the 4:00pm performance...the host kept mentioning the evening "finale" despite there not being one (it was EMH night for the Studios...didn't notice any additional performance). It's ok...nothing special. From my perspective, it seemed like at least one them was a guest, since he had a group of people in the audience supporting him. One was actually good...the other two were bad. The judges weren't bad...there is one that is Cowell-esque, but it seems as though they condition the crowd and contestants for him to be unflattering, which he was. There was one who seems to offer actual critique, and one who makes Paula look sane. If anything, they need to get rid of the Jordan Sparks video...they want the audience to participate and sing and dance along with it, but my fellow audience members weren't at all interested in that participation. All in all it wasn't bad...but it really isn't anything special either.

The male judge does offer some pretty harsh criticism...but as I said in my previous post, they pretty much condition the crowd to expect him to say something nasty...almost like a villain who isn't to be taken seriously. One of the female judges...though she seems easily pleased, at least seemed to manage to offer actually crtique (not so much as criticism), whereas another is so obnoxious she made Paula Abdul look like Simon Cowell.

My Thoughts on American Idol Experience

I saw the very first show at noon today... here are my impressions (from someone who has never seen the TV show, outside of a few clips here and there):

* I work in the TV business, so I was very impressed with the technology on display. It looks and feels like a real TV show, and the way the lights, music and video are all sync'd up for each song is really cool.

* They gutted the theatre and put new seats in, but it's still a tight fit in there! I'm 6-foot and 170 lbs, and I felt cramped in the seats.

* I thought the pre-show inside the theatre dragged on. The pre-show host telling us to clap, raise the roof, and do other silly stuff while the song "Lets get it Started" played seemed like a waste of a few minutes. The instruction on how to use the voting system also took a long time. This all hurts the replay value of the attraction (meaning something I won't do every time I'm in the park).

* The main show host was good, and kept things moving. I thought the judges were fine, but I felt that the judge playing the Simon role kept falling flat with his insults/sarcastic remarks. I think this is because, besides a smattering of boos from the crowd, there was *no* reaction on stage to him. If one of the other judges told him he was crazy, or if the host told the contestant not to worry about it because he doesn't like anything... something like that would've made it seem like that judge wasn't working in a vacuum. It would also be nice, if someone was REALLY good, that the Simon-type character would snap out of his gimmick and praise them, much like the real Simon... but it is yet to be seen if that will happen.

* They do not display the voting results. From what I understand, this is done to protect the feelings of those who do not win (especially if they receive very little votes), but I can see people saying "oh, this is rigged." Apparently, you can go to a CM and ask to see the results after the show (or if a contestant disputes them), but the show won't be forthcoming with the information unless they're provoked about it.

* Overall, my three complaints are: the pacing of the show was a bit slow (mainly the in-studio pre-show, the Jordan Sparks music video, and Ryan Seacrest's taped bit after the winner is announced), the seats aren't that comfortable and the lack of interaction among the judges. That being said, I did enjoy the show and would like to see it again. It's not a "must do" every time I'll be at the park, but I will have no reservations to do it when I'm with someone who hasn't seen it, or to kill 40 minutes or so while waiting for a fastpass time or a dinner reservation to arrive. I assume fans of the show will be more eager to do it over and over again, as I was with the Millionaire attraction (many people found that too repetitive and time consuming, but I could do it again and again because I loved the format of the show so much).

Just my two cents!
