I recently recieved a $1 US coin with change from a store. It looks a lot like our 'loonie'(CND$1 coin) On the front there is an Native American with a baby in a sac on her back and the year says 2000. On the other side is an eagle and it says United States of America. Is this coin legal tender? Can I use at WDW when I go in 2 days? Or is this a special coin that is meant for collecting? Thanks!

It's a real coin; it's the Sacajawea dollar (she was the Native American who accompanied Lewis & Clark on their expedition). It stands a marginally better chance of acceptance over the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin from '79. That coin failed because it was too similar in size/look as a quarter. This new coin is the same size as the Anthony dollar, but is a different color.

You can definitely use it, but if you're a collector, you may want to keep it because who knows if it will be around for a long time.

I think that they've already quit making the $1 coin, but I may be mistaken.

I may have an extra one lying around. If I can find it, I can find a way to send it to you. Is that cool? Give me a few days though, bacause more that likely, it is in a box I have yet to unpack since moving in.

They tried to see if they could get the coin to replace the $1 bill... however, instead of becoming casual tender, it became more of a collector item. But, they are legal tender, and even work in most vending machines. I know US Stamp machines give them out as change.

Yes, indeed, the Sacagewea Golden Dollar (coming from a coin collector like myself) has had production terminated for general circulation coinage (which means they don't make them anymore to be given to banks, etc, and ultimately, businesses (and you) nation-wide)... However, they still make them for inclusion in special collectior proof and uncirculated sets sold directly off the USMint site at http://www.usmint.gov/. The Golden Dollar, as it is affectionately known, is given as change at many vending machines. During the program (2000-2001), the Mint encouraged people NOT to hoard them for possible collectible value, but rather spend them, circulate them, and make them Useful. However, as their production has been terminated for circulatory use, this urge may be taken null and void. If I was you, I would not spend it. As it was produced as legal tender, and for general use, but now are not made anymore for circulation, just keep it as a souvenir of sorts. However, if you encounted any vending machines that take 5 dollar bills, there is a very good chance (well, 100% chance) that if you give it 5 dollars, it'll spit out 4 Sacageweas as change. So, it is not an uncommon event, to be the recipient of a Golden Dollar coin. However, it is not a common event either. Use it as you may, it is legal tender and was the subject of a huge ad campaign that told Americans to Spend it. It was not meant to be a special collectors coin. However, nowadays, in a creul twist of irony, it might be just That.

They made it cause they wanted to replace the paper money, what will it take to get through the thick skulls of these polititions that people will not accept a coin dollar,as it is I hate change, specially pennies.

At my house, the golden dollars are special tooth fairy coins.....

BTW--I think the loonie is a way cool lookin' coin. Isn't there a Canadian coin in two colors (gold & silver), perhaps with a polar bear on it??

I kinda wish the US used the dollar coin. From experience in Europe I used my change more often when I had the €1 & €2. Over here in the states, I rarely pay with change. I only collect it and cash it in every 1/2 year or so :(. I know I'd pay in full if I had more $1 coins  :) . I guess I can only dream.

I know noone cares about my currency, but we have some cool coins too... in silver and gold. Our regular 1, 2, 10 and 20 pesos coins are on both colors, nice coins. I hate the 10 and 5 cents coins... they are worth nothing and they are hard to catch in your wallet!
