April 13 presidential press conference forces FOX to shuffle 'American Idol' broadcast schedule

By Steve Rogers, 04/12/2004

President Bush has succeeded in doing what rival networks have been trying to do for months -- knock FOX's top-rated American Idol series off the airwaves.

The White House announced this afternoon that President George W. Bush will hold a televised press conference on Tuesday, April 13, beginning at 8:30 PM ET, a move that sent Fox programmers scrambling to reschedule Tuesday's planned American Idol and created new head-to-head programming aftershocks for the other networks -- most notably CBS and its hit Survivor series.

Not willing to lose broadcasts of two of its most popular shows, FOX has announced that Tuesday's American Idol and 24 episodes have been rescheduled for later in the week, with Idol's Tuesday and Wednesday broadcasts shifting to Wednesday and Thursday and 24 moving to next Sunday evening.

Instead of airing live, this week's American Idol performance show will be taped on Tuesday night before the normal studio audience and will air Wednesday, April 14 at 8 PM ET/PT, with voting lines opening at the end of the show as usual. The voting outcome will then be revealed in a special one-hour American Idol results show airing live on Thursday, April 15 at 8 PM ET/PT -- a move that will pit it directly against CBS' hit Survivor series and no doubt damage the ratings performance of both shows. Following Idol's results show, FOX will air the program previously scheduled for broadcast in the 8PM time period taken over by Idol -- a new episode of the network's Tru Calling series featuring guest star Tamyra Gray, one of the finalists from American Idol's first season.

The episode of 24 that was originally scheduled for Tuesday night will air Sunday, April 18 at 9 PM ET/PT.

I'm hoping George will do 'King of Wishful Thinking' from the Pretty Woman soundtrack. I can see Jon Peter Lewis doing 'She's Like the Wind' from Dirty Dancing. And I'm hoping noone does 'My Heart Will Go On'; there are way too many choices out there to have someone fall on that song. Hopefully someone will be willing to take risks this week: Perhaps: Hot Summer Nights from the Top Gun soundtrack, How do I live? from Air Con, or the Barbra Streisand song from the Eyes of Laura Mars soundtrack.

Ugh... Totally clashes with Survivor Thursday night. Then I have to watch two hours of Apprentice before I can watch whichever one I recorded! I'll be up all night!

I read somewhere that they give the contestants a list of songs that they have aquired rights to. So that would explain why some huge hits are never sung. For instance if you noticed there were no Shania Twain songs on country night. She won't give AI permission to use them.

Tonight's making me sick.

George didn't pick a great song for him. Then Diana did Titanic, JPL ruined an Elvis song, and Fantasia ruined Finding Nemo by saying it's her favorite movie. :hurl:

The people there are giving standing ovations for bad performances.

Much as I hate to admit it; My George picked the wrong song.
Fantasia hit a homer too, even though alot of folks may not know that song. LaToya owns the stage,

My picks for tonites performances:
Fantasia
LaToya
Jennifer

The others were just mediocre, Carrot Top has to go tomarrow.

I like your picks, but in a different order...LaToya, Jennifer and Fantasia (as much as I hate to admit it). I really thought John would have picked a Sinatra song. (just what makes that little old ant...)

legacy, good call on the titanic song.

um, Jennifer is looking better physically, she has gone with a more natural beautful look, and I love it! her voice is becoming more controlled too. brilliant.

george, jasmine, jpl. eh.

john. good. great song choice.

Fantasia. I love that song. but when I hear it, I hear Ella Fitzgerald singing. and when fantasia started singing, I tuned her out for Ella. oscar winning? HARDLY.

and my heart will go on?! I skipped that perfomance instead of running from the room.

LaToya did her own version of West Side. Very good.

I watched Entertainment Tonight before watching the show, and Tarentino liked Jennifer most of all. Though, Quintin should stick to movies, not song reviews. (kill bill vol 2 out friday!)

as for who is going.....John or JPL.

I'm in the minority, I thought JPL brought it. I think his personality is what he's got going for him and it showed through tonight.

John - great job, but we all knew it would be when he could pick the style song he was singing.

I thought Latoya and Jennifer were best.

My predictions for whose going home tomorrow -
Jasmine or Diana

The others were either too much better, or have too big of a fan base i.e. John and JPL

Tonight was OK. I didn't think Fantasia did that great of a job.

George is cool but his voice is too whiny. Same with Fantasia.

Jennifer has really come out as a good singer.

JPL is way too funky and he's not the great of a singer. He did good tonight though.

John Stevens did OK but can he make it in the pop world?

Jasmine is a brilliant singer. I hope she stays on for a while.

Diana is my favorite. She's only 16 and has a great voice. I have to say she may go home though. She just doesn't have that distinctive personality. Too bad.

May I point out we have 3 teenagers in the top 8? Diana- 16, John Stevens-16, Fantasia-19. Wow

Weakest tonight: George, Jasmine, and Diana.

Best: Latoya, Jennifer.

Best they have done so far: John Stevens.

Most annoying: Fantasia.

Going home: Jasmine or Diana.

Couldn't agree more. I loved Fantasia at the beginning now I don't like her so much and it definitely wasn't an Oscar winning performance.

I send my props to LaToya and Jennifer. Way to go girls

WOW! :sohappy:

Exciting show last night!
Tonight's "verdict show" is down to 1/2 hour so FOX can try to keep viewers from switching to Survivor and The Apprentice with their Tamyra Grey show.....

As I see it....

My early season predictions still hold on...

LaToya - already a winner, whether she "wins" or not (and she SHOULD!) "Somewhere" is one of my favorite songs from a show and, while she did an outstanding job, it sounded really "old" when compared to the others - must have been the poor arrangement. She still made it shine! :sohappy:

Fantasia - If only people could look past her snippy attitude of past shows, they would have heard her terrific selection from Porgy and Bess. It was a show-stopper by any definition of the word! It really was THAT good! Those who have seen P+B in concert or on stage will tell you. Her turnoff: She needs to keep her mouth shut after the song is over and be more gracious when accepting critique. I'd hate to see her bounced because nobody told her to behave better.....Like her or leave her...she's good! Can't deny it.

Jennifer - I'll try to be kind - REALLY! :D I like her....I've said it before...I really do.....BUT....The girl needs a fashion consultant and some new contact lenses or something. Those bug eyes are distracting while she is singing! She still comes in third on my list becauseshe has talent! I say....quit trying to squeeze into those clothes they give you and get back your old poofy hair and you'll be more memorable..... (sorry for ther shallowness of that critique...but it's true....). She should try to be the next Teresa Merrit....not the next Whitney Houston.

George - Bad song choice. He was never a favorite of mine in the past, but the rest of the night was butchered, so it shoots him up the ladder! I think George has staying power, even if every quirky fake smile and twitch does annoy me....There is a market for that sound...but it's not the American Idol one....He will be the Last Man Standing!

Jasmine - I gave her a chance originally, because I thought there was potential. Sadly, I was wrong. There is not. We've seen allshe has to give. Her voice is too young. (Thank goodness Simon finally brought it up. I said it it last week!) Shame on her for not singing "Colors of the Wind" in a Pocahontas costume! That would have been her chance to shine! Her flower has faded. Cute, ...but so are puppies!

Diana - Poor girl never had a chance with that selection. Same vocal problem as Jasmine. (see above).

John Peter Hobbit and John Peter Stevens: The new William Hung's of the show. They're SO AWFUL it would be a shame to boot them off! It's entertainment! First....Who told the Hobbit to sing an Elvis song???? With a Bazillion song choices from movies out there, it says a lot that he had to go back that far to find one to do - and a mediocre one at that!!! Elvis could barely pull it off, and JPL is no Elvis!!! It did nothing for his voice or his chance to be the American Idol. John Peter Stevens is just sad. His High School must be operating a phone bank just to keep up the laughs!

With that said, I will surprisingly pick DIANA to be voted off tonight. My theory? There are too many girls left to split the vote and she will come out with the fewest. Don't get me wrong - ALL 3 of the guys will go eventually....but it's fun to string them along until it's even on both sides. Besides, they could still get WORSE! ...and we wouldn't want to miss out on that! HAHA!

That means Jasmine goes after Diana...then we start picking off the guys.....MUUUUUUHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

:drevil:  :drevil:

BEST LINE FROM LAST NIGHT: "YOU MADE ME FORGET I HATED THAT SONG!"

Remember...it's all in fun!
