Yeah your right, it was '04. I forgot since it was a while ago, I was only in fifth grade...

Don't worry I was only 13. I was just making sure it was '04 lol. And trust me after renting searaycers and driving by river country and discovery island it does look pretty bad if you get close.

I don't understand why idiots would go into areas of Disney World they should not be snooping around in. First off the current state of River Country looks completely dangerous and second whats the big deal?

River Country had its time, that time has passed, these are not the droids your looking for, move along, move along...

Jimmy Thick- Good spot for a "Trespassers will be shot" sign...

Because when you lack talent in general, and you wish to be famous, do stuff and video record it, post it on youtube=instant fame.
Plus, look how much mileage they've gotten here. That video has been posted on this forum in at least two different threads!

Ok, but when you consider videos of dogs farting can get over a million hits, not to mention that Friday song, the word "fame" loses its luster rather quickly.

It's just curiosity. And all of us have been curious enough to watch it. I would never have done it personally, but if someone else wants to risk being arrested...cool, I'll watch the video...

I agree, I find it interesting, it's part of WDW history.

The music wasn't playing because Disney "left it on". The music was playing because, unbeknownst to these two fellers, a scene from Deliverance was fixin' to be re-enacted.

Doing nothing is free. Demolition costs money and eliminates options. Exactly. If Disney demo'ed everything they weren't using, then we would not have the Treehouse Villas that we do today. Some regulations with Reedy Creek will state if an area is demo'ed/cleaned up, then nothing new can be built on the site. (pharaphrasing of course).

Well i have never been to river country, as 2006 was my first trip to the world, but i do miss the good ol' rumours about it re-opening.

I am kinda shocked that disney let it just rot there though. Standards. :zipit:

I am far from an expert on the subject and most of my knowledge comes from anecdotes of those who say they are. Therefore take what I am going to say with a big old bucket of salt.

Land usage, zoning, etc changes all the time. A chunk of land that was legally usable in the 70's might not be in 2011. If a structure already exists on a piece of property that fits that description a remodel is typically allowed or "grandfathered in". However, if the structure is 100% demolished the construction can no longer be classified as a remodel and construction will not be allowed. The other thing to consider is impact fees imposed on new construction. The same rules apply. If they demolish it all it will be classified as new construction if they leave a certain percentage it will be considered a remodel. A new structure requires an impact fee in some counties(both Osceola and Orange counties charge them). Depending on the size and usage of the new construction impact fees can easily be in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars for a large commercial usage structure.

^^^ Master Yoda, well said and explained.
For an example, we own a house that we were renting out that we did not realize had so many problems. It the long run it would be cheaper to demo and rebuild. However, since the original structure was built in 1840, yes with round log beams, there have been these things called "flood plains" drawn on maps. So if we were to demo the property the only way we could rebuild would be to put a house 8 foot in the air. Okay in FL, very drafty on the feet in western NY for about 1/2 the year.
If Disney leaves the structures and then later wants to "repurpose" them it is much easier to deal with building permits and zoning laws to renovate. I kind of figure that is why they left the "classic" years of PC undeveloped until they were ready to do something else with the property there.

In front of everyones eyes?
Takes away from the whole property?
Guests go through it all the time?

Sarabell, I'm getting the idea that you've never been anywhere near this part of Disney World.
But whether you have or not, you clearly don't have a clue.

River country is abandoned.
I'm a WDW fanatic. So I've been there to see the ruins.
But very, very, very few have seen this first hand.
Just because a couple clowns wandered in with a camera doesn't mean something should or should have be done in this area.

Disney will clean it up and redevelop it when it's the right time to do so.

Excuse me but I don't see the need to get so hostile.

You're right, I haven't been there since River Country was still up and running, but if you took the time to read Micketic's post (the very first one on this thread) it says you can see it from the boats and from some other area. Allow me to tell you that being able to see an abandoned area (any) at WDW does take away from the whole happy place experience in my opinion.

Now, allow me to do a small survey here, cause I could very well be speaking nonsense not having been there to see it myself.... everyone, am I talking nonsense?
