I don't like the idea of the Great Movie Ride being updated because I like it the way it is. If they updated it,maybe Avatar and Twilight will be in the ride. Who knows?
I feel the same in some respects, but here's the situation as I see them:
1) There are several sections that are simply unimpressive and/or artificially elongated due to budget/rights/etc. These would include, most specifically, the Tarzan scene and the "Horror" scene (which is really just about as generic as it gets). Some put Aliens in this category, but I disagree - I think that section needs some reworking, and also some new animatronics (these break down too frequently), but it's a highlight of the ride personally.
2) There is also quite a bit of wasted space. For example, the really long entry into the gangster scene. The Western scene could be shortened.
3) They could selectively trim and update and then add stuff around them, or they could start from scratch. Something tells me, the latter is what "they" would push for, only because it's easier to gut and rebuild anew than to work out all the logistics of working around the stuff already there. I, of course, would prefer the former.
An additional problem is the extent of licensing/branding/corporate "families", now vs. the 80's when the original ride was constructed. There are several films in there that are not Disney and I think they'd have a harder time getting rights to such things for additional films to include now as opposed to then (i.e., any Universal or Warners films would be excluded due to their current contracting with competitors, etc.). And, let's face it, live action Disney isn't exactly brimming with Oscar winning movie classics.
It's something I'd like to see, done right, but I think I'd side with the 'leave well enough alone' if they were going to drastically rethink it. The one thing I'd like to see rethunk the most, though, would be if they dropped the "soundstage" thing - take me IN to the movies, immerse me...it's the same way I felt about Star Tours 1.0.
I really don't think "World" is the way to go. It seems too easy. If anything, it would be neat if they revised with something like "Florida", which makes sense, since this is Florida after all and the "California" one is in California.
A ride showcasing FL's landscapes would certainly increase the ride capacity - since the ride film would be about 90 seconds, with a good half that time devoted to a gator scare mid-film.
Three Words: "LOST" The Ride. Site: Disney Hollywood Studios. You know you want it. :animwink:
A ride? No. An experience? Well, it certainly would be awesome in that River Country plot.
Some say LOST is over so why would they, but with such an incredibly rich mythology, it's also screaming for a "secret DHARMA station" for you to explore, spend time in, etc. Heck, even offer an "overnight" package, including your very own DHARMA jumpsuit.
I also think we haven't even begun to hear the last of LOST - everyone swears up and down the show is over, but I have no doubt within the next 5 years some LOST project will show up, so many possibilities with so many characters, the time travel aspect, etc. - probably short form miniseries, etc. I honestly think it's the best IP for the "boutique" park concept they could come up with.
