A Spirited Valentine ...

What they are doing to Tower of Terror was not even a consideration in my worst nightmares on the damage Iger could inflict on the parks.

This is a head scratcher to me because if Iger is concerned about his "legacy" why do this ... it doesn't work with the theme of the park, it creates tons of sight line issues because you could see the tower from practically ever land, and the response was overwhelmingly negative ... how does this help his legacy?

The short answer is he loves Marvel more than he loves the parks and he must force his crap on us regardless of whether it fits or not.

Explained here.

Simply by looking at where his priorities are. Iger sees the Parks as little more than marketing platforms to shill his BRANDS.

In the end, I'm sure there will be more people interested in the GotG brand than the TZ brand.

Dang! So woefully behind and here I sit with my DIS annual report and all kinds of questions. It is, however, tax season and I work too much and recreate too little. I have Wednesday off and will prioritize my time to include a little perusal of this august post.

If the parks were just BRAND marketing platforms as Iger seems to think they are then maybe but the fact of the matter is The Twilight Zone is FAR more culturally relevant than an obscure comic book that only got big because an over-rated movie based on it came out.

Don't forget the impact of the ride itself. 23 years and still going strong. This really is no different than the idiocy that was spouted about Zootopia in Splash Mountain. It also flies in the face of building Pandora which is based on another not so hot IP but the product itself will still be incredible. In short, TZ not being as huge an IP as GotG don't mean ****.

Welcome back Spirit. With regard to the ever climbing fees, my girlfriend and I both cancelled our APs. We're voting with our wallets to let them know the prices are becoming too much. Will not be returning until SWL opens.

Interesting excerpt from the Orlando sentinel article about the price hikes:

Overall, attendance declined 1 percent at Disney’s domestic theme parks in fiscal 2016. On Tuesday, the company reported the number of domestic visitors fell 5 percent year over year for the first fiscal quarter. The company blamed the decline on factors including Hurricane Matthew and a Christmas holiday shift. Seasonal pricing could also be encouraging visits during less busy times, executives said.

“However, the fact that Disney was still able to increase its theme-parks segment's revenue by 6 percent and operating profit by 13 percent is exactly why it's going to go through with this month's inevitable hike,” analyst Rick Munarriz wrote Friday on the Motley Fool financial website. “Disney is learning to make more with less, and it won't stop until revenue and earnings suggest otherwise.”

The only thing that caught my attention was quoting Rick Munarriz. It amazes me how lazy the media is with sourcing stories. Just pull something off the web or someone off Twitter who says they're an expert.

@WDW1974 , are they planning on bringing back Cast Member 99 cent prime rib Thursdays? Sorry, with you getting hammered with all of the questions I couldn't resist. Glad to see you back!

I doubt that. CMs can just do what I do: go to the Ale House, pay $13.99 and get great prime rib on Thursdays ... oh wait, that's way too pricey for most.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been around since 1969 and only after the first movie became culturally relevant...even Marvel fanboys were like what and who when they title first dropped just like they did with Big Hero 6. Twilight Zone a lot of people know.

So what exactly is your premise? That TZ is more popular? By what standard? The show is off the air. Attempts to make TZ movies or bring back the series have failed.

That TZ is more well-known? Probably. But there are many well known IPs that wouldn't necessarily elicit excitement. Would you make an E-Ticket ride out of "I Love Lucy"?

A decade from now a father will tell his tween daughter about how great the ToT was when it was Twilight Zone themed and she'll just roll her eyes from Anaheim to Alaska not even wanting to ask what the heck a Twilight Zone is and hear him reminisce nostalgic. She just can't even.

try the two sister hotels at flamingo crossings...roughly 100 a night depending and so so close and NO traffic.

I actually tried out the Spring Hill Suites out there in the middle of nowhere recently. Paid about $85 a night for a suite that puts any Disney value or moderate room to shame (except for the theming I hear the whining from here). Very nice and relaxing and easy access to WDW, especially DAK, BB and then EPCOT and that whole area. But there is an 'off' vibe about the area because ... well, there is absolutely nothing out there. And when there is soon, it will be new ghetto housing for WDW CPers. I will resort (pun intended) to my 2007 position and say this development was a bad idea.

BUT ... it is a great place to stay. I have checked and out of Marriott's dozens of properties within 20 miles of WDW, this place is almost always the LEAST expensive. It is a great choice to stay at for a Disney or even UNI vacation.

What an odd post...

Why are you agreeing with him that TZ is more well-known and then predicting that in a decade kids are going to think the trendy movie from before they were born is cool?

There ya go. Same old @ParentsOf4!
I type 2,000 word posts for 40 likes and you just pull a chart out of your butt and update where needed for the same!

Seriously, I'm glad that Disney is finally spending money on its US theme parks, especially in the swamps. But I have a hard time giving credit for something that should be a given. Iger has been leading Disney for over 11 years now. How many jobs would you be able to ignore one of your biggest assets for that long and stay employed?

I get this is his 'victory lap' period (hence the rush to get Marvel into DCA). But his leadership of P&R speaks for itself. I'm not giving him credit for finally being there long enough to notice that WDW needed attention.

And let's not again miss the way Disney keeps those numbers so bright for Wall Street. Any tacky upcharge events announced this week yet? No. Slow week because of the big ticket hike Sunday ... a true Valentine for Guests and fans alike.

Quality over quantity. Spending doesn't change that themed entertainment at The Walt Disney Company remains an overly expensive form of advertising intended for saps with a long history of being run by people with no experience or interest in the industry.

Are you saying The Weatherman and Chappie don't love the parks? Or that they don't love them as much as "the puckish gladhander" and "the oddly waifish man of anemic personality"? Those dudes LOVED the parks. In them eight days a week if they could.
