In his defense, no one knows the exact distribution of said 1,000 new CMs. Did they go to Hotel and Resorts, Disney Springs, where? All members hired are CMs so it could very much fit in what he is saying regarding the park ops. How many part time? How many actual full time?
Please don't defend his drivel. He stated that they are laying off CMs, which is obviously not the case. Doesn't matter where they are going, they are not downsizing CMs right now.

I don't buy there aren't enough CMs. I see many standing together often (they were tripping over each other in Pandora). There are tons of Disney cast members. I did notice better bathroom attendants at Universal.

I don't think there's a shortage at all but you'd have to go to the parks to notice. Now putting them where they want to be or are qualified to be, that's another story.

Just a random thought. My family stopped going to UNI because there's not enough stuff for my 93 year old grandmother who's in a wheelchair to do. I always like taking her and pushing her around, but she can't do any roller coasters or anything like that. At WDW you can spend a whole day doing wheelchair accessible attractions. I've found the wheelchair procedure at WDW pretty great. Especially on newer attractions like Little Mermaid and even the stand by queue on Frozen.

Exactly. A lot of people don't think of this. Some people are very limited in what they can do at Universal. Thankfully I can stand screens so it's not a problem for me but many have motion sickness. It's very very limited. WDW has a slew of things for everyone.

Indeed. And it's not just the rides but also having more/better shows including the night time entertainment and parades. Yes, I know WDW has seemed to cut down in that category in recent years (i.e. no night parade at MK or any parade at DHS) but what they do offer is superior to Uni and accessible to anyone.

Did Disney hire 1000 FTE's. Or did they hire 1000 PT bodies who are getting 10 hours/wk

You do of course know that its possible to let go permanent FT staff which is what Disney has been doing for years now and replace them with PT staff and have FEWER available labor hours. While STILL crowing about 'hiring' 1000 people, note Disney's presser makes no mention of 'full time' employment.

For the existing PT staff a common complaint is 'cannot get enough hours' to make working at Disney worthwhile.

How the mighty have fallen from one of the best employers in central FL, To one where one is frequently better off working at WalMart.

So how am I literally tripping over castmembers who are tripping over themselves? I'd agree with this maybe a year ago. And I have no idea what hours are being given but part time is never a guarantee of hours. Not defending them at all, and they should pay their castmembers more.

It's more or less retail. A job is a job, even at the "most magical place on earth". Not saying anyone deserves certain treatment but I've been down this argument before. If you aren't happy, start looking for another job, go down to the street to the magical and wonderful Universal who does nothing like this (and no one needs to tell me how it isn't easy, I had this debate just a few days ago, not going there again).

An unhappy employee will often exaggerate how bad things are. I've done it. I've been there. It sucks to make a living off of part time work that's not guaranteed.

I agree disney mostly has the better shows but the tales of beetle bard in Diagon alley is amazing and it's so simple in its execution , I find that to be a can't miss while most Disney shows to me are dependent on what my kids want to see

We already have a bunch of parks in town that have rides that don't move for the infirmed octogenarians and infants. Let Universal build actual rides.

While I agree with this, I do think that IOA is lacking in the gentle attraction department. A vast majority of the attractions have a lot of fast motion (for those who hate calling them all "thrill" rides) or drops, or lots of water.

There's really only one sit-down show with Sinbad.

And it's not about having things for infants to do. It's the fact that many want to go to Universal and spend time there but find out they can't do most of the attractions. That's not a slight it's just a fact. So while Universal sure isn't hurting for attendance, there's likely many who come away disappointed. Nothing wrong with having a bit of a variety. I love the parks and can do the attractions (well Hulk and Rip Ride I skip for height reasons LOL but I'm sure I'd survive) but you have to understand many can't. It's not even about appealing to infants. What about those who love Potter and find out that they are both big thrill e-ticket attractions that have screens and drops and nearly upside down movement ... they can't do them.

Once again you can have BOTH, Since WDW has lost much of the experienced FT team leads (as they were first to be let go last year as expensive) you now have a large number of inexperienced team leaders who dont know how to deploy the assets they have effectively.

So what you are seeing is too many staff in visible areas but I'll bet there are areas which are at the same time severely understaffed.

I'd also posit that the mix of staff is probably wrong as well as if you have too many attraction or F&B staff and not enough custodial you have things like knots of CM's giggling on attractions (as you note) while the trash cans overflow.

As to the 'unhappy employee' let's just say that we know more than a few CM's from visiting over the years and they are not unhappy but universally their hours have been cut if they are not FT.

it's that Disney is so far into 'just in time' staffing that there are large numbers of CM's who only get 8-12 hours per week and the days vary so you can't plan. And CP'er are getting an increasing chunk of the workload. So in many cases it's indeed better to work at WalMart these days as they treat their associates better than The Mouse treats it's CM's

I know it's probably a great experience for some but I'm really surprised they've kept the CP going. I know it's "cheap labor" for Disney and they get money from the checks back in rent ... but I know how companies work. I've worked many big box stores that go on hiring sprees for seasonal and then the part time staff gets cut down in hours. Full timers are asked to go home early if they so choose ... sometimes they even get 32 hour weeks ...

Do you have a source for ANY of this?

I'll even take a insider from this forum.

EDIT: And not just "there were layoffs last year". A statement that it was "team leads" that were let go.
