A Spirited Perfect Ten

And why are both Disney and UNI fanbois so against the O-Town Eye? I happen to like the thing and it does nothing but improve a very bland and boring part of town that has gained lots of new places in the last 18-24 months.

I think the complex as a whole, and its neighbors, have the potential to do some real damage around town. $50 for a ticket to all four attractions (almost half off that with AAA), and free parking. Going to hit Sea World hard. I think Uni and even AK might feel a bite as well (I single out SW and AK just because of SeaLife--I think one animal-centric attraction in a week is enough for most dads).

Meanwhile, at night, I-Drive is turning into the second coming of Church St. Station, arguably even PI. It's going to demolish CityWalk, and steal away a lot of the customers Disney Springs seems designed for.

I do worry about cannibalization to some degree. Lots of places on I-Drive are closed. Everything from Applebee's and Houlihan's outlets to much of what you don't see from I-Drive of Pointe Orlando. Indeed, the latter has a Dan Marino's Town Tavern location that appears to have closed in about 2007 and not been touched since.

North of Sand Lake is still in a lot of trouble. But this should only help businesses like Howl at the Moon and Senor Frogs and some of the other chain restaurants. As for Pointe, Marinos might still be empty (I can check tonight), but in the last 3 years, probably 10 places have opened--all of them higher end. Go there on a weekend or with a big convention in town, it's packed. Still transitioning from a shopping mall to a restaurant/nightlife complex, but well on its way.

BTW, Houlihans as a chain was horribly run, at least in central Florida. Their 192 outlet is a case study in "." And Applebees is probably a little too pedestrian for the crowd coming to I-Drive these days. Not as many family tourists, at least at night.

As someone who actually knew/knows Michael (no, we aren't best pals ... he isn't having me over to a BBQ this weekend), my experience with him is that he was very good at learning from both success and failure. With that in mind, I certainly believe he would have spent far more on WDW than what The Weatherman has. I'm also having a hard-time picturing MDE buying into the pitches for NGE at the cost given.

So, I think he likely would be somewhere in the middle of the three examples you provided.

A lot has been written and said about building parks 'on the cheap' late in his tenure and much is true. But I can say for a fact that he was quite aware of the DCA issues and looking into major rethinking of the park before he left. Of course, he also screwed the Chinese over (as did Pressler) by cutting 60% of HKDL before it ever was built too.

The one thing I can say with certainty is that Michael loved the parks and appreciated them. I do not believe Bob feels the same way.
Exactly! I don't know MDE personally but that's how I've always seen him.

You know those guys trying to sell that decommissioned Monorail on eBay? Nobody went for it, so they're driving it around. It came home yesterday. Here it is at the Poly.

You should look at Monty's Facebook page. Security moved them to DTD today.

can you imagine if they transformed it into a camper or attached it to the structure of those high end camper trailers?

I wasn't changing the finish line, but more clearly illustrating why Disney needed purchases like Lucasfilm and Marvel - because there are only so many animated classics they can bastardize for live action, and only so many theme park attractions they can base pictures on.
Well, I don't know about that. I've always thought that Astro Orbiter would be a great attraction upon which to base a motion picture. It would be about a proctologist that suffers from an intractable case of déjà vu...

I can eat at an Applebee's in a town of 40,000 in Arkansas. If I'm in Orlando, I'm searching for stuff not found at an exit in Conway.

As for Sea Life hurting Seaworld it only means SW will have to up its game when it comes to attractions. That's one reason for the Blue Ocean project. It will have to do stuff that can't be done at a place like SeaLife. Zoos are constantly upping their game when it comes to animal displays large and small, SeaWorld is no different.
