A Spirited 15 Rounds ...

I disagree. Yes, the academy has had difficulty with the idea that they don't actually choose the same movie that the general public does for best picture, but there's several issues with doing a most popular category.

Does being in the most popular disqualify it for best picture? In the rules of the category itself? In the eyes of the academy voters who may choose one or another based on whether they're in both?

That's the biggest "argument" against it and I just don't think it is very strong. These things are addressable, and some have been already. It is also why they are waiting to further develop the concept - aside from responding to the valid criticism that changing rules mid-year was actually the bigger logistical issue (as many campaigns for current films would have been affected). The lion's share of most of the criticism is based on them announcing it too soon - not an inherent problem with the idea itself.

Yes, it was later qualified that a film could get both awards. I don't see this as any different than the Grammy's - you can win "Best R&B Album" and also win "Best Album".

Basically, the same doomsday prophecies were made when they opened it up to more than five nominees a decade ago - and somehow, we survived (and are better for it, IMO).

I understand that the Oscars have at times felt out of touch with the general public, however they've already added more members and diversity to help rectify that. This just seems to be a knee-jerk reaction when they don't vote for Black Panther or Infinity War for best picture.

I don't think that "diversity" among members really has anything to do with this issue. In fact, while it is a good thing in general, it actually could exasperate this issue in particular.

It isn't just a matter of being "out of touch" with the general public - but most importantly historically out of touch in a lot of cases with what ends up being most culturally relevant.

It also isn't a "knee jerk" response. More categories has been a long time coming. It would prevent another Hurt Locker / Avatar, or Moonlight / La La Land. This is not a new issue, by any stretch - it just is a relatively new willingness to do something about it (as they did when they expanded the BP nominees to begin with). They are just moving further on the same path.

Let's not forget - it is a very sound decision for the Oscar ceremony itself. Ratings are down because people don't want to watch a 3 - 4 hour presentation that mostly features films they haven't seen and many never will. Ratings historically have been strongest in years where there were strong, well-known Best Picture nominees that people were exited about. This gives them a chance to draw in a larger audience, and keep the whole thing afloat.

To be really honest, I think most of the reaction to this has been knee-jerk, and I think it mostly has to do with one word: "popular". Some just have a natural aversion to the word when it comes to various forms of media.

In the end, I don't see how it is really any less "special" to award multiple films some top honors - it solves a lot of issues the Oscars have always struggled with, and allows more films to be represented. It's not like they are going to start giving out participation trophies, LOL - there is enough cinema being produced that it really isn't going to shift the entire cinematic world out of whack to recognize two (or even three - I'd be up for a few of these categories) in an entire calendar year.

Nutcracker and the Four Realms looks like another $100-$200 write off for Disney.

One wonders how a project like this gets so far along without anyone saying "wait, why are we doing this again?"

It feels like it was made to meet a contract obligation (like The BFG was). And it will be a solid catalog title. I think the write off will be smaller, even with the reshoots, $50-75M.
