Random Industry News Round-up

SeaWorld Stock jumps 4% on rumors of a sale.

Matt Ouimet leaves Cedar Fair

Not saying they are related, but if ANY major theme park operator needs a competent "fixer", it's SeaWorld.

If they do sell, I really hope they continue their recent focus on entertainment. Electric Ocean/Ignite was awesome this summer.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with how the channel is programmed elsewhere. In the US, Disney XD is almost exclusively what most would consider boy-aimed shows. Marvel shows, DuckTales, some live action garbage, etc. Freeform, formerly ABC Family, is where (in the US) Disney puts all its teen aimed drama garbage (Pretty Little Lies, etc.).
Can you send your programming over here? it contains way too much live shows and so few cartoons :(

Sorry to go off topic (do we have a topic in this thread still?), but I just watched the 3rd episode of Star Trek Discovery. HOLY FREAKING COW that was awesome! CBS is so stupid for only showing 1 hour on broadcast television and then pushing the rest to streaming subscribers only. I am now 100% hooked on this show. It felt a little like Next Gen, definitely a bit like DS9 (Dominion war arc episodes) and yet felt completely new at the same time. The acting was good. It was cinematic. Some strange choices sure, but had they shown the 1st three episodes on TV before moving to a subscriber only model, they would have snagged a lot more viewers. Can't wait for next weeks episode! :joyfull:
Definitively, I cant believe the 2 episodes that has the REAL adventure and action. (setting up the whole plot) were set up as private. They should have done a Pilot then a 2 episode reveal of episode 2 and 3, and then move the products into streaming to shove people in.

The good side.. netflix in my country offers Discovery (with subs and voice in spanish) one day later.

I love it but the klingon prosthetics are TERRIBLE!!! The actors can barely move their mouths. All their speech is muffled so badly and I really wish they went a different route with the make up. That is my only gripe though, other than that, fantastic job. Very cinematic and beautifully shot.
Unfortunately, You do not have that many Experts (Doug Jones fan) in prosthetics...

lol! That's true, but in the poor Klingon's defense, the Asian woman was once Master Li Mu Bai's girlfriend and had some mystical Wudang training...so shes gonna be a handful for pretty much anyone.
If she had the Sword of Destiny.. she would have cleaned the whole klingdon fleet herself.

I doubt that will happen, but it would be awesome for SeaWorld...and for everyone who likes seeing money poured into a place. Imagine if the did to SeaWorld what they did to Uni. :jawdrop:
If Comcast/Uni bought it. SeaWorld, as a brand would cease to exist. It would be spun off as an NGO and be relegated to animal rescue and rehab. The Orlando park would become Uni's. 4th gate with everything being razed with the exception of Manta, Mako, and Infinity Falls. Discovery Cove would stay. And Aquatica would be upgraded. Possibly keeping the name. Comcast would sell the 2 Busch parks to Merlin or Cedar Fair.

Comcast/Uni. would love to pull the Sesame Street characters into their arsenal of kid friendly IP.

For those keeping score, that would give Uni. 4 full blown gates, 1 boutique park, and 2 water parks in the Orlando Market.

The Busch parks would be a better fit under Herschend I think.

But this is exactly the kind of bold move which has the POTENTIAL to vault Comcast over Disney (Hey Bob bet you wish you had all that cash you blew on Buybacks)

Keeping the SeaWorld marine mammal rescue programs under Comcast has the potential to buy them a lot of goodwill from Govt and Environmental groups

Oh well that actually sounds terrible then...at least to me anyway. I would hate that because I love SeaWorld. I'd much rather Universal build a park from the ground up and leave SeaWorld to someone else if what you say is true.

Merlin has a bid in, right now, for the Busch Parks. SeaWorld doesn't want to break the company up like that because all they would be left with is the damaged SeaWorld brand that no one wants. They want to sell it as a whole, obviously.

Someone like Comcast would have no problem busting it up and selling the pieces parts, keep what they want and dumping the rest. They would get some of the purchase price back immediately by taking Merlin's offer. And have incoming revenue by continuing to operate most of the Seas parks while reworking the Orlando property.

Not to mention the 475 acres and adjacent land Comcast owns or wants to buy is sort of stuck in legal limbo right now.

SeaWorld is desperately trying to get out of the SeaWorld business. The brand is toxic and no one wants it. SeaWorld, as a brand, is toast. It will be joining Ringling Bros. soon.

Which is why Comcast probably will buy Seaworld as it will allow it to leapfrog its primary competitor in the Orlando market. And since it has an established brand it can make damaged SeaWorld brand go away without damaging attendance.

Amazing what you can do when you manage the BUSINESS instead of the Stock Price.

Its interesting that Matt Ouimet is leaving But managing this possible new arrangement for UNI would be definitely be in his wheelhouse.

SeaWorld has been doubling down on SeaWorld. New offerings are more SeaWorld branded than in the past and there is a new park that is in active development.

You might be right but I still have hope they can navigate their way through this. Only time will tell. They definitely need to focus more on animals that thrive better in captivity though. Clearly their days of keeping whales on property are numbered. More rides and shows, with limited animal involvement (and significantly improved natural habits for the animals they do keep) along with an increasing focus on conservation is where I think they are headed.
