A sleeping arrangement question!

Hello all,

I have a son who will turn 2 while at disney in may. We are staying in a one-room villa at the boardwalk. Last january, when my son was 8 months he slept in a pak-n-play that was provided in the room. We had it set up in the living room so he could watch disney channel.

He probably won't be comfortable sleeping in the pak-n-play this time around since he is alot bigger than he was last time. I thought about the pull out bed, but he hasn't slept in anything other than his crib and I don't want him to fall off.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Our two year old slept in the pak and play. In fact I think she slept in it even when she was 3.

Besides maybe putting pillows on the floor which wouldn't be too comfortable for him. What about having him sleep in between you two? Although not as fun for you, at least you wouldn't worry about him falling off the pull out. Or you could try putting pillows around the pull out.

What about one of those little blow up beds for toddlers. They are an air mattress with a blanket attached. I saw them at our Walmart (I think).

That's what I was going to suggest. They make little toddler ones with a little ledge along the edge to help prevent them from rolling off of the edge. My son had a Thomas one that he slept in every time we visited family. You can also have him sleep in bed with one or both parents.

Actually, if he is used to a crib then he'll probably do just fine, even if it doesn't look comfortable to you/ me. Kids who are used to a crib like to be in something with "walls." An "open" air mattress or bed with rails will often feel to big and open to a kid used to a small crib space. I do understand your thinking though - my DS has always been in the 95%, so he was the size of an average 3 year old when he was 2 - I always wondered how he could sleep in that tiny, hard bottomed pack n play, but he loved it!

You don't say when your trip is - if you have months and you think you might move him to a big bed before the trip, then he'll do just fine with bed rails. Have a great time!

Thank you for all your replies.

Our trip is may 4th. My wife believes like most of you that he will be fine in the pak-n-play. So, we will probably just go with that and if he can't sleep in it we will do something else.

I like the idea of a blowup mattress and I will look into that.

It probably won't matter much since he will be worn out from the parks even with naps. We are taking a large jeep 3 wheeled stroller so he can sleep during the nightly shows. We will just lay him in the pak-n-play and see how he does.

Once again, thank you for all your replies.

We just went this past January with my 2 and 4 year olds. My 2 year old also still sleeps in a crib and he is a larger child, in the 90th percentile for both height and weight. We requested a crib from housekeeping. It is not much bigger if at all than a pack and play, but he fit just fine in it and slept very well. Just bring an extra blanket from home to keep him warm.

I really don't think you'll have a problem with either option. He should fit just fine.

When DD was two (actually 22 months) I requested the pak-n-play. I also requested two sets of bed rails. The first night she was so tired, she fell asleep on the bus. Easy enough - put her in the pak-n-play and she was fine. The next night she refused to even lay down in it. Put the rails on one side of the bed, and I slept with her. This is how we have done it each time since.

If you are using the rails, I strongly suggest requesting 2 sets - all but one trip they were so small that one set on one side didn't cover much of the bed. Don't know if they changed them, but last trip (also at Pop) they were your normal size.

One other suggestion for the rails - if you can, pile all your luggage up on the side of the bed by the wall. Put the rails on that side. It will give a little more support to the rails - so the child doesn't roll against it and it snap.

My daughter has slept in the double bed with two bed rails on our last two trips (she was 14 months and 2 years old). I like the children sleeping in the bed b/c it gives you more floor space (the pack n' play does take up a little room).

And one poster mentioned that their bed rails were really small. Bed rails have to be a certain length in order to be considered a "bed rail" so I'm wondering if you had the collapsible bed rails. They collapse inside each other for traveling but they extend out when you need to put them on a bed! I had these on my first trip (which are just like the ones I have at home actually) but on my last trip I had different ones which were quite large and bulky!

You can always try the bed and if your baby doesn't like it than you could switch to the pack n' play. But children will surprise you on vacation... they do things they would never do at home (my son decided to potty train himself on vacation - true story, I had the suitcase filled with pull-ups and had to take them ALL back home!)

I think you have three options, I think a two year old will be just fine in the pack n play, My daughter did just fine in their for naps.

At night because we were in a new place, we let her sleep inbetween us, which worked out just fine for our trip.

If he sleeps on a Toddler bed at home, he might be ok in the pull out, if you request those bed rails from Mousekeeping!

Have a fun trip!
