A Procrastinator's Super Late 2011 Marathon Trip Report!

Hi All! As I await our trip in November, I spend a lot of time reading others trip reports and I really enjoy them. It immensely helps to pass the time before we embark on yet another trip to our favorite vacation destination. I had always planned on writing a trip report on our Disney Marathon, but life got in the way and I didn't get around to it. I keep receiving emails about next year's marathon and it brings about mixed feelings. On the one hand, I am happy to not have to put in the grueling miles of preparation to prepare for it but also pangs of jealousy for those that are doing it because it was such an awesome experience.

So to relive the experience and to psych myself up for the next trip, I decide to write this much delayed trip report. I think it will be mostly pics with a short narrative as so much time has passed. I hope you enjoy!

On to the report!
Cast of Characters: My husband, Dan and myself, Kristi
Stayed at Coronado Springs from Jan 7-14, 2011

My short backround story to our madness begins in October of 2009 when I read Hollybelle's Marathon Trip Report. I thought it sounded like such a great time that I somehow convinced my husband that we should do it in 2011. Keep in mind that I have never been a runner. I could barely run a mile when we started training. We started with the Couch To 5K program. We entered a few 5ks then a 5 miler. In August, I injured my knee and it looked as though the marathon was in jeopardy. Luckily my husband is a PT and rehabbed my knee. We continued training with me back to running in October. In December, we had worked up to a long run of 15 miles. That was the longest run we were able to get in before the marathon, so we were a little worried but figured we would just go, have fun and make the most of the experience.

We took a later flight on Friday from Atlantic City to Orlando. The plane left around 6:30 pm. We landed in Orlando around 9 pm. The line for Magical Express was pretty long.

I was surprised because we usually land in the early morning and are able to get right on the bus. We waited about 45 min before we were able to board the bus. We were starting to get pretty tired and hungry. We were looking forward to seeing Coronado Springs since this is the first time we would be staying at this resort. We were the second stop and starving by this point.

We checked in at a empty registration. We had done online check in but I guess that didn't matter since we were the only ones.

DisneyJan20111177.jpg

By the time we got there, checked in and dropped off our luggage, the counter service was closed. There was a menu stuffed under our door for a pizza place that delivered. Dan talked me into letting him order pizza. Unfortunately it would take 45 min for the pizza to be delivered. That meant dinner at midnight! Yay! And we had to be up and on a bus around 3 am to cheer on my friend who was running the half marathon.

The pizza delivery guy would call Dan on his cell when he arrived at the front of the resort. I wandered around taking some pics while waiting.

I love this trail. Some may think I am weird, but I love the bats. They have cute little dog-like faces. You can see why they are called flying foxes. I don't understand why people find them scary. These guys are not the beady eyed insect eating bats that are around here. Although I like them too. Definitely an animal that gets a bad rap. And these specific bats are fruit eaters! Sorry for the tangent (steps off soapbox)!

At this point we decided to head back to Coronado to get ready for dinner. I took some shots as we wandered out.

Kristi! I'm so glad you decided to post your marathon report, even if it is late. The excitement, pain, agony, and exhilaration come through regardless! Unfortunately, I've already forgotten half of what I wanted to say because I got so caught up in cheering you on as I read. I'm happy to see you stopped for at least one character - the Sarge was a good choice! And I laughed out loud when you said "you run your race and I'll run mine." Amen to that!

I don't know that I'll ever attempt the marathon again, mostly due to Bear Island Road. Your pictures of it take me to a very deep, dark, place. So do the ones of the out and back. :lookaroun I swear reading your report has my knees twitching in pain - it's a full sensory experience! :D That last 5K is a real B#@$%, isn't it?! I don't know how to even describe it. It's like those 3.1 miles become the whole of Mt. Everest and you just know you have to get to the top, but how? Major props to you and Dan for running that last .2 to cross the finish line. That is something I tried desperately to do, but just couldn't. Love the look of pure exhaustion and accomplishment in that finish line photo.

Okay, now back to reading the rest and seeing how difficult it was for you to get around the parks. :lookaroun After all, I'm assuming you had some pretty fabulous bling weighing you down!!

Hi Holly! I am so happy that you are reading my report! You are my inspiration after all! :ROFLOL: After reading your report, I told my husband that I wanted to do that. He looked at me like I was crazy because I had never been a runner. But then he said, "Ok but you are going to stick to it and follow through!" Gulp! Utoh, what did I get myself into?! That last 5k..... B#@$% is right! I have never experienced anything like that before! It must not have left too much of an impression though since we are going to try for it again in 2013. What can I say we are gluttons for punishment!:ROFLOL: We also would like to do the Disneyland Half that year and get the Coast to Coast medal.

I hope that someday our Disney trips coincide and I get a chance to thank you in person! We have continued our running and just finished a half marathon this past weekend. In 3 weeks, we are doing the Run the Bridge 10k which is a race over the Ben Franklin Bridge which crosses the Delaware River connecting Philadelphia to Jersey. I am probably in better shape than I have been in a long time all because of your report! I had never even considered a marathon or even a 5k till I read your report. Oh and I even beat my husband in our half marathon by a minute :lookaroun Hope he doesn't read this:lol: He is the usually the much better athlete between the two of us! Thanks again!

Here is a pic my friend took of us at AK.

DSC00278.jpg

We left AK and freshened up for dinner AKA changed into dry clothes! We had dinner at Boatwrights at POR with my friend and her family. It was pretty good. I had never been there before. Unfortunately, I have NO pics from this evening. I can't remember if I forgot my camera or just neglected taking photos which is totally unlike me. My camera is usually glued to me! Anyway, my friend was leaving in the morning, so they decided to call it a night.

Dan and I wanted to head over to DD. We were excited to take the boat from POR to DD but it was not to be. They had just closed the boats due to fog. Oh well, guess we are taking the bus.

We had a really nice evening at DD. Dan is a video game nut, so he was treating to DQ. It was half price that evening (I guess because we were entering after a certain time maybe?) so that was cool. We hung around there for a few hours and then did a little shopping. For dessert we had warm gooey brownies from Ghiardelli. Yum!

After our brownies, it was time to call it a night.

The next morning we went over to Epcot for the first time this trip. We made it just after opening and briskly walked over to The Land to score some Soarin fastpasses.

DisneyJan2011331.jpg

Fastpasses in hand we took a ride on Living with the Land. There was no line this early in the morning.

I just love this scene, but always have trouble catching it with my camera.

Next on the agenda...Mission Space.....for Dan! I am not into Mission Space. I have never done the Orange version because I don't do well with those type rides. I have done the Green version and it is just ok. Not something that I need to do very often. I was more than happy to wander around and take pics while waiting for my astronaut.

I found this pretty flower while waiting.

After Dan came back to Earth, it was time to use our fastpasses at Soarin. After Soarin, we were able to catch Captain EO which I saw in 1984. I think we probably went to visit Figment as well, but I don't have a pictures.

We decided it was time to go back to the Coronado for a little nap. On the way out we hit Spaceship Earth.

Before we took our siesta, I wanted to walk around the resort a little to check it out. We were staying in the Casitas section pretty close to the convention center so we hadn't had a chance to see the other sections except as we were driving through on the bus. We got off the bus at the Ranchos section and took a long walk back to our room. I really love the rest of this resort. The only mod we haven't stayed at so far is POFQ only because the Mardi Gras theme hasn't really appealed to me. Those jesters all over the place kind of creep me out!
Until now, the CBR was our favorite mod. I think the CSR may have jumped to number one! The grounds are beautiful and the rooms were sooooo comfortable. The beds were amazingly comfy. Love, love, love! Anyway, on to some photos!

Love the pics of the resort! Such a beautiful property. I have a grandmother who winters in Arizona and I've been to visit and I love that whole southwest theming :)

After our much too short nap, we needed to head back over to Epcot for a dinner reservation at Via Napoli. We had a little extra time and I wanted to take some pics at the Boardwalk area so we hopped on the DHS bus and walked by the Boardwalk on our way to Epcot.

This slide definitely creeps me out! If I had seen this as a kid it probably would have sent me into a panic attack.

It was finally time for our ADR at Via Napoli. We shared the Arancini appetizer which are fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella. For our entree we shared an individual size Quatro Formaggi pizza. It was awesome! The individual size was more than enough for both of us (and Dan can usually eat a half a large pizza on his own). It was about the size of a small or medium pizza back in Jersey. For dessert, I had the apple cake which was also very good. I can't remember what Dan had.

We wandered around World Showcase while we awaited Illuminations which is my favorite nighttime show at WDW.

After our Grand Fiesta Tour, we found a place nearby to watch Illuminations. It was getting close to 9, so it was getting a little crowded. I didn't include any shots of Illuminations as they didn't turn out great. I neglected to bring my tripod.

Here are a couple from when we were waiting for the start of the show.

After Illuminations, we went against the crowd in World Showcase and made our way to the exit via the long way so I could take some photos. Again, I was kicking my self for not bringing the tripod, but I hate lugging it around.
