A One-Time Only Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge Trip Report

Hey everyone! I am back from a trip to WDW to partake in Marathon Weekend and more specifically to take on the Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge! This trip did not go entirely how I thought it would but it is over now and its time for a recap. My pictures especially for the races are a little lacking from my last marathon report. I just wasn't feeling it this trip. Cast of characters is just me (Kristy) and husband Dan.

Here is a link to my pre-trip report if you are interested in the backround - http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/goofy-challenge-pre-trip-report.857764/

The days leading up to this trip were very stressful. The Thursday before we left our gas furnace died. Luckily we have a fireplace and were able to keep warm with that and space heaters. We needed to get estimates and have it installed in less than a week. I didn't want my friend who was staying to take care of our animals to have to worry about keeping a fire going. Funds are stretched here already and a new furnace was not in the budget. Ugh. We had the new furnace installed on Wednesday and we left on Thursday morning. Talk about cutting it close! Along with having a furnace installed, my husband calls me on Wed while I am at work and tells me that our one horse is sick again. He had an issue in the past, which we thought had been dealt with and it resurfaced the day before we leave. STRESS, STRESS, STRESS! Call in to the vet but it is after hours by now. It is not a life-threatening issue but one that I don't want to be unattended to while we are gone. Needless to say, I was having second thoughts about this trip with all the problems we have been having.

We left our house around 3:45 am and arrived at our off-site airport parking about an hour later. We had a 6:30 flight out of Philly. We found a great parking service that will take you to the airport in your own car, drop you off and then pick you up in your own car when you come back. For an extra fee, at pickup, you can leave straight from the airport and they will get a ride back to the lot. Very convenient!

We finally arrived for the flight and there were a lot of other runners on this flight as well. We were all pretty quiet due to the early hour I think. In no time, we were boarding and then waiting to taxi.

I was still pretty stressed having not heard from the vet yet. I just didn't have the normal Disney excitement. :( I tried to sit back and enjoy the ride. We did have a beautiful sunrise!

Soon we were passing over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel system. Looks neat from the air.

Starting to descend into the Orlando area, I see the Port Canaveral area! Kind of need another cruise! (at least I think it might be Port Canaveral)

We headed down Victory Way and back towards Osceola Parkway. This is the point were we could see people coming out of mile 20 as we went into the sports complex. I was kind of curious to see how many people were behind us. Utoh, there was nobody going in. We were at the near back of the pack. Thank goodness we had started in C because if we had stayed in G like we were originally assigned, we may have been swept off the course. This was a little disheartening. Probably about now, I had another thought. I had heard to earn your Goofy medal that you had to finish both the half and the full within the required time pace. If we weren't able to speed up, would they really not give me a Goofy medal? I hadn't voiced my concern to Dan yet but I tried to speed up the pace a bit.

Cliffhanger! I hope you guys made it! That would be quite unsettling to not see anyone going into the complex! Yikes!

I have never done anything like this before......I do TaeKwonDo/Karate which is sooooo much different than RUNNING! LOL!! I am learning sooooo much, and I can't wait to read the rest!

Definitely unsettling! There were also clean up crews cleaning the streets already. Yikes!

Thanks for reading! Good luck with your training! I would like to do that race someday but probably not in the near future. I have a couple other races on my plate now that are a little closer and cheaper! It is such an awesome feeling to cross the finish line. You will be hooked. I started running to do a Disney Marathon and now I have kept doing it and entered a lot of local races over the past few years. I never thought of myself as a runner and sometimes it still amazes me that I am still at it! My husband has his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He stopped going when we moved a bit to far from his dojo so now he has taken up running with me!

Glad I was able to give you a little encouragement when you needed it. :D
(Still need to pick a date to get together and celebrate your accomplishment!)
Going to try to facebook message you tonight so we can get a plan together! :)
So great that you got such great support from @fmingo36 and your husband! :) I am in awe that you were able to keep going when feeling so crappy...you're awesome.

Totally agree with your throughts on WWoS...I thought that part of the course would never end!
I am glad I stuck with it because I definitely felt better towards the end aside from the aching muscles and aching feet!

The puppets are super cool!!
I have a question about pictures I keep forgetting to ask on these running reports! When you pass the mile markers, do you stop and take pictures? Or do you just slow down? Or snap and run?

I have to stop to take the pictures. If I don't, they are all blurry especially in the dark!

Okay, I was assuming everyone stopped but I didn't know if that would be too big of a pain in the neck! :)

Well I do think it can be a pain in the neck, especially if you have to wait for a few other people to take their pictures of the mile markers. On the other hand, it gives you a quick break, and nice runners will sometimes trade taking each others' picture, so you can actually be in a few!

More of a pain for me last race was having to take my iPhone out of my armband every time I wanted to take a pic. I will carry an actual P&S next time if for no other reason than not having to take my phone out of the armband! So annoying :(

Oh that is nice of other people!
I know nothing about running marathons, I just thought I remembered in someone's report that stopping was not good! That you hurt worse when you started going again.
Again, I know NOTHING about running. :)

Oh man! I cannot imagine running sick! Poor you! Even if the time isn't what you hoped for, you gotta know you're a helluva woman for not throwing in the towel and pushing on. Seriously. Puting up the good fight in the face of adversity...you do the female species proud, girl! Can't wait to see how the race concludes!

We do the walk/run thing for marathons. There is no way that I can run without stopping for 26 miles! We usually take a minute walk break every mile (more for this race!) so we took our break at each mile marker. I have found that walking a minute each mile actually doesn't hurt my finish time usually because you can run faster after the rest break so it all evens out in the end!

Awwww...thanks Kelly! I am still mad that I didn't do better. I know that I couldn't help getting sick, but the timing just sucked!!! I paid all that money to do this race, so as long as I wasn't dead, I had to finish or at least try till they dragged my butt off the course!

Yeah, I also have to come to a complete stop to get a decent picture. I feel bad doing it, because sometimes it involves cutting across the course (poor etiquette)...so I just try to put up a hand and yell out a warning. :) It's worth it though!

That's what I do too, much easier to keep track of! I do think it would be hard to start up again after a REALLY long walk break (i.e. 5 minutes or whatever).

That makes sense! And walking, running, whichever - I'm still impressed!!

I would imagine that people are a LOT more understanding of the needs for pictures on a Disney Run! :)

I always stop for pictures. I take my point & shoot camera; carry it with me the whole race.

For those of you that like to read race reports and see pictures, here's a link to my Tower of Terror 10 Miler report. I only posted it on the running board. As you can see I take pictures of EVERYTHING! It's the reason I run at Disney...well that and the kiss-a$$ bling!

Dude. We have a running board? Who knew!! Haha! I will go check that out. Your trip report, not the running stuff. :D

Okay, I see everyone stops. I didn't think point and shoots would be quick enough to snap on the run and I couldn't imagine running with an SLR!

Yes we have a running board. Check it out--it's a great group of people!

I found my Point & shoot to work just fine during the races. Night pictures aren't the best but it works for the most part.
