A Chicago Cub fan's hope

I've been a Chicago Cub fan since 1971.

I chose the Cubs as my team not because of where I lived, whether it was northside or southside of Chicago as most do, I was born on the westside of Chicago.

It was a very simple decision a 6 year old boy can make.

Your post gave me goosebumps! Words from a true baseball fan. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all for your responses.

You take the bad with the good, if you're a real fan of any team for sure. Being a Cub fan for 37 years, for me, my skin is very tough.

What happened this past Saturday night, I expected, after watching Game one. Though expected, I hoped it would not be so. You have a sense by watching your team for so long that you can tell if their heart and their head are in the game or not. This time, as last year, both were not.

At least it was over quickly, quick death...My secret feeling is it would have been more like the Cubs to win games 3 & 4 and drop game 5 at Wrigley.

I don't know what to expect next year or the years following.

I've read the various news articles, opinions and some on-line forums, since game 3. It is funny to see some of the anger being displayed by what people write. It's hard to tell whether or not the writers are disenchanted Cub fans or fans of a rival team. Some going so far as to call for the dismantlement of the team for squandering so many opportunities.

I was really angry in 1984 when the Cubs lost then, not so now. I was only 19 then when my emotions and opinions were more easily and readily spent. I could never be that angry again.

Since the team has been up for sale, and still is, anything can happen. I fear that Wrigley Field isn't going to be there for much longer, I see a new owner, someone most likely being from outside Chicagoland, pushing for a new ball park. Maybe even moving the team if they don't get what they want. A Championship probably could have staved it off longer.

We used to be so sure that there would never be night games at Wrigley, but we can never be so sure about anything anymore.

It was a good ride for awhile. If us Cub fans didn't have our pain to hold onto we probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. When it does happen it will probably signal the end of the world as we know it!

I have this vision of 3/4ths of the Chicago police, on Addison Street, in full riot gear. Cars being tipped over... etc so yeah... that would be the start to the end of the world.

This city was so sure it was going to happen this year that they outlawed drinks being served after the sixth inning at local taverns around Wrigley during the post season to try and avoid such a calamity!

Haha yeah... I read that in the Trib last week. Ban the sales of booze/beer at the end of the 6th. But when the games ends... drink all you want again. Didnt quite get that.

I didn't get that either...My suspicion is that Mayor Daley being a well know White Sox fan, wanted to somehow to "stick it" to Cub fans! Since no such ban was in place for the White Sox nation.
Just kidding though, knowing that the areas are both quite different from one another, Wrigley being more of a neighborhood with more local taverns closer to the park.
That's what did us in...assuming we were going to go all the way, someone forgot to knock on wood! (not Kerry Wood)

I'm what you could call a nominal cubs fan, or a fair weather cubs fan. I don't generally watch sports, but since I grew up in a Cubs household, I tend to root for the cubs, even though I don't watch the games. I did watch them in 2003, when it looked like they were going to go all the way and then, as always, blew it. I knew better than to even bother watching this year, because even though I don't usually watch sports, when I do decide to watch (in the event that the Cubs go into postseason), I get too mad when then inevitably screw up. I was furious in 2003. LOL So I didn't watch it, and I was not the least bit surprised that they blew it. Again.

But I do feel for those die hard fans who were dissapointed yet again. Regardless of which team it is, I feel for anyone who is solidly behind a team and has rooted for them and been with them all season, only to be dissapointed when they don't make it. And since I don't follow sports much, and don't have a strong loyalty to any one team, I don't need to get into that childish crap of being nasty to people who root for the "wrong" team. I just know that, whether it be politics, sports, or whatever, when you have commited yourself to a team and have put so much hope into that team doing well, it hurts to see them go down to defeat, and I can empathize with anyone in that situation. So, my condolences to all those loyal Cub fans who have been disappointed yet again. As the saying goes, there's always next year.

Hear, hear!

It can be good to keep in mind that there's always some wife-beating drunk who supports your favorite team (or party/candidate), and there's always an adorable 8-year-old girl who loves your most hated rival.

You may be more of a Cub fan than you know. ;)
Anger, frustration and disappointment can only be expressed by someone who cares.
After 1984 when the Cubs really broke my heart for the first time, I swore off baseball in a fit of rage then. It took some time to get over that and I managed to not get my hopes up too much always keeping the whole Cubs fan experience in proper perspective, if it happen, it happens. I took this horrible defeat by the Cubs in the post season this year better than the previous ones. It's still painful, none the less.
It's funny, I was just about ready to put this loss behind me in my head, while driving to work this morning I heard over my car radio that the White Sox lost their 3rd game last night and have been eliminated. It was nice to hear the White Sox manager being interviewed offering praise to the Rays team, saying they were the better team, great sportsmanship! I think the White Sox did very well for themselves this year, I was thinking, good for them! Even though they weren't able to advance. Then the news reporter interviewed a White Sox fan after the game and the fan said "At least we did better than the Cubs!" I felt the knife go in and open the wound again! Ouch!

So true!
I remember going back to high school, I was in the marching band.
While at a home football game, waiting for halftime, I was in the home bleachers getting ready go out on the field and perform. I heard some of my fellow band members near me yelling out angry curses towards members of our team out on the field because we were losing at the time. I turned to look at them, just when a young girl and boy, about Jr. High age, yelled back down in front of us and told these yahoos to stop. I was very surprised to see such bravery from such young kids at a High School football game. I was ready to jump in to help if them if needed, in case there was a backlash, but the kids explained further that it was their older brother who was playing on the field and was doing the best he could!
The yahoos sat down, obviously ashamed of themselves, I as well was ashamed to be wearing the same uniform as these guys.
