I usually don't say this about ideas, about bringing things back, about starting something that's seemingly impossible, but...

Start a petition.

And look to my signature for inspiration. It could help get your point across.

See, I'm not really sure this is a situation calling for a petition. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of voicing your disgust about something that's happened or about to happen, but I think a petition is too passive for this. Petitions say, "please fix your mistake" or "I don't agree with your actions." We have a better opportunity here.

To me, I see this as a situation for the fan community to be the aggressor, to take a pre-emptive stand on an issue we aren't yet quite sure of. Basically, to say this to Disney:

"We don't know your plans for the 40th--but they better be good. Because if you drop the ball, we most certainly will pick it up. If that happens, your company will look foolish. More foolish than you did when fans bested you into acknowledging EPCOT's 25th."

Although, maybe in being the aggressor, we could use a little help from a certain alien--no, not Stitch or Skippy. I know of some executives who should "meet" him. :D

^I understand. :)

So this is the fans trying to fix the problem... something we don't see every day.... hmm... this will be good...

celebrating its monumental

throw birthday parties for our less-than-favorite in-laws. We actually like Walt Disney World (perhaps a bit too much), so it goes without saying that we'll be celebrating its monumental birthday in similar fashion. Please post your ideas and plans for mobilizing the fan community here.

What? How dare this important thread be not on the first page!
To the OP, what do you plan on doing to get this message across? As in, only people on WDW Magic know about this.

Call me crazy, but I just have that gut feeling Disney executives may have something up their sleeves for the 40th Anniversary. At least I hope they do. But I think it's a given that if nothing else; all of us being the huge fans that we are, and the WDWCelebrations team will definitely commemorate the milestone. I'm all ready planning on being there for this significant date in 2011, I wouldn't miss it for the world. :)

I wouldn't underestimate the power of posting only here, on WDWMagic. When the discussion began about celebrating EPCOT's 25th, the discussion began here, and spread to other websites just by "word of mouth" (and not based on an active dissemination by the event's organizers). We're still quite a ways out from WDW's 40th, so I plan on giving this time to develop its own stem (and hopefully, to get certain posters to get "on board") before taking it any further.

Are they officially recognizing the Studios' 20th anniversary at all, or is it just WDW Celebrations?

The Walt Disney Company has yet to determine (or at least disclose) their official plans for the occasion. If the park does get some sort of official commemoration, WDWCelebrations will work the official activities into their existing schedule, to allow for participation in both official and unofficial events.

Not so long ago, fans were discussing what Walt Disney World would do to celebrate EPCOT Center's 25th Anniversary. Some speculated a year-long celebration, others a more modest approach involving a few refurbishments of select attractions. Time passed, and it became apparent that nothing would happen. A few emboldened fans here took it upon themselves to embrace the day that Walt Disney World's management clearly would have just as easily forgotten. Suffice to say, management heard of the momentum these fans had gained, and decided to join the celebration with a day of activities, and a year-plus exhibit looking back at EPCOT.

Continuing the trend, not so long ago, fans speculated that Walt Disney World's 40th Anniversary in 2011 would be a grand celebration, including refurbishments and restorations of many prominent attractions. Time has passed, the economy's outlook has worsened, and these plans—if they ever existed—appear to have been shelved.

What management will do to celebrate the Resort's 40th Anniversary, at this point, is anyone's guess. Shortsighted although they are, one would think they have at least learned enough from EPCOT's 25th to realize that the company minimally must pay face to the anniversary. However, the dictates of common sense don't always seem to govern management, and perhaps a little prodding or a helpful reminder is in order. Thus, we have this Call to Arms.

We fans will be celebrating the Walt Disney World Resort's 40th Anniversary whether management recognizes it, or not.

In an effort to maximize the chances that management will similarly celebrate the 40th, we will:

  • Visit, call, email, and mail guest relations, and express the importance of celebrating the resort's 40th anniversary
  • Promote the resort's 40th anniversary through the electronic means of Disney fan forums, blogs, social networking sites, etc.
  • Acknowledge the 40th anniversary while at Walt Disney World with fan-created clothing
  • Organize private and public celebrations in honor of Walt Disney World's 40th anniversary.

This unexhaustive list is not the only ways in which we will celebrate—keep the ideas coming, everyone.

We all throw birthday parties for our less-than-favorite in-laws. We actually like Walt Disney World (perhaps a bit too much), so it goes without saying that we'll be celebrating its monumental birthday in similar fashion. Please post your ideas and plans for mobilizing the fan community here.

We will not allow this historic occasion to go ignored. This will not be a rehash of the 35th--a pin will not suffice to appease us.
And if all else fails, we have WDWCelebrations.

I don't want to make any promises until we announce anything, but I'm sure WDWCelebrations will be doing something... :animwink:

So sure, in fact, that you may see something regarding a future event (or events) in the very near future. :animwink:

Mind you, I may just get shot for saying anything more. :zipit:

I'll be looking forward to that potential announcement. I can't imagine you getting shot for announcing that WDWCelebrations likely will be doing something. It's like announcing Santa Claus might be doing something on Christmas Eve. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion even without an announcement!

Nonetheless, good to hear from you...

So are we seriously going to keep this thread alive for 2+ years? Jumping the gun a little dontcha think?

Nah. Bumping a thread isn't that difficult. I think it's better to have the ideas out there, getting exposure, and more people thinking about it (and putting it on their work calendars, getting the time off far enough in advance, etc.), than to wait, and not worry about keeping a thread alive.
