ANYONE DRIVE DOWN FROM THE NORTHEAST AND NOT USE 95? I HEARD FROM A FREQUENT TRAVELLER THAT THERE IS A FASTER MORE SCENIC ROUTE CUTTING THROUGH THE VIRGINIAS,TENNEESSEE, MAYBE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA INTO ATLANTA THEN DOWN TO ORLANDO, SAID IT ONLY TAKES HIM 14 HOURS FROM SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY!!!! ANYONE?????:snore:

Any road that takes you through Tennessee and Atlanta is not faster than 95. I don't think a more direct route exists. Perhaps a more scenic route does, but not a more direct route.

I dont think you will be able to find a faster route. I live in Illinois, and it takes my family and I 18 hrs straight through.

You must be driving pretty fast, then, because we live a few hours south of you, in Mattoon, and it takes us 18 hours straight through. Or, I guess I should say, it TOOK us 18 hours, since my wife has since put her foot down and said no more straight though trips. We now have to stop and sleep overnight somewhere. :(

But then again, the 18 hours is from when we leave to when we arrive. The clock doesn't stop when we stop to eat, or stop at a Walmart or something. So it includes the sit down meal at the Shoney's in Nashville, plus the stops that we made at Walmart each time. If you don't make such stops, that could easily account for it.

As to the question at hand, the only way I can think of to have a quicker route is if there are some highways that run a similar path to 95. There may be some non-interstate routes that could possibly be more direct, but I doubt it, especially since they have a lower speed limit and you have to do the stop and go driving through the towns. But there is no way you're going to veer off West into Tennessee and then go back Southeast and get there quicker than you would if you just went South on 95 all the way.

We drive to Disney from CT quite often and have taken the route you heard about through the mountains, as well as 95. The time is about the same both ways if you factor in traffic. But the mountain roads are quite breathtaking. For simplicity sake I would just stick with 95 though, unless highways through the mountains are of particular interest to you. The time is about the same, but you'll save on gas on 95.

The time of year will make a difference in travel time, also. If it's winter, and you hit snow/ice on the mountain route, it will slow you down. (There might also be more traffic, as many of the secondary roads will be closed)

In foliage season that route will also be more crowded.

Driving to Disney from St. Louis..

I just love the drive from St. Louis to WDW.. The southeast United States is so beautiful, and it just builds up the anticipation of getting there!!

It only takes us about 15.5 hours from St. Louis! Not too bad!

Heading back in a little over a month!!

I'm from central Jersey, and for anyone to get from South Jersey to Orlando in 14 hours, no matter how many shortcuts he or she might know, would require long bursts of Cannonball Run-esque speed.

Just for chucks and giggles, I went to mapquest and just threw some numbers out there. Assuming you're leaving from the border of Cape May (about as South as you get in Jersey while still being in Jersey), and arriving at the border of Orlando (no specific WDW address), that's a distance of 959.5 miles. Now, assuming that, the entire ride down (most of it on 95), you're averaging 75 miles an hour. No serious stops. No long breaks. No traffic. The entire ride you're averaging 75 miles an hour, which also includea areas where techincally you're not allowed to drive 75 miles an hour. THAT ride would take you about 12 hours and 50 minutes

Now, instead of going down 95 (and possibly not as far South as Cape May), your friend is going through a scenic route, where the road will be more meandering, around mountains, and get to Orlando in 14 hours?

I'm not saying your associate is stretching the truth, but if he IS telling the truth, he wasn't anywhere need a speed I'd personally feel comfortable driving. Maybe his "shortcut" is just more isolated and less policed, so he feels comfortable driving faster.

81 through the Shenandoah Valley and down through east Tennessee to Atlanta is much more scenic, but it's a lot longer from where you are than just taking 95. Once you get through Washington there are not many large places to slow you down, either. Until Route 4 through Orlando of course!

Typically we drive from northern illinois in the evening and stay in Mattoon at my grandma's before heading down to Florida. This time we're leaving from Northern Illinois and staying in southern Illinois. Either way, the drive is still way more entertaining than flying.

We are a 16 hour trip from Houston and have driven straight through. I agree, it makes for a more memorable trip with the drive. I so rather drive 16 hours than haul two kids and stuff through the airport security, baggage check, etc, etc. Wait for the plane, then sit on the three hour flight with ancy kids......
