Trip Report 2017 WDW Holiday Trip

Hello Friends!

We are less than a day away from our trip to WDW. It's been several months since our last trip there. In fact, it was a rather short trip last April where we still managed to do our first Wild Africa Trek.

This time, it will be a longer trip, slightly more than a week. Of course, we will be doing MVMCP, a dinner at Boma, and also the DVC Moonlight Magic at Epcot. This will also be our first trip there since Pandora opened, and we have fastpasses for the two attractions there. So this will be a fun but busy trip.

As usual, I'll try to report live from where we will be and what we will be doing. And Donald is all set and ready to go. He's in his festive, holiday outfit already.

We have a very early morning flight out tomorrow, so we will be turning in rather early tonight. I just know that I won't be able to sleep much tonight!

I always like it when they decorate for the holidays.

However, what Disney giveth, Disney may also taketh away. I was disappointed that the miniature village at the Germany pavilion was not decorated:

It looks bare and sad. Compare this from a couple of years ago when there were cute, miniature holiday decorations and Christmas trees:

So Disney parks need to bring back not only these decorations, but also the gates of winter that used to adorn the entrance to World Showcase during the holidays.

See, I'm not asking for much!

You're right--a little miniature village like that would have been so quaint, with a few holiday embellishments.

For this next set of photos, I'm going to call it "O' Christmas Tree, O' Christmas Tree". These are the various photos of Christmas trees that I took while on this trip, excluding the Christmas trees that I already posted from the Tree Trail at DS.

The first one is from Animal Kingdom.

These are the photos of the majestic tree in the lobby of Jambo House at AKL.

And finally, this is the lobby of the Yacht Club.

We always do resort hopping during the holidays just to look at the holiday decorations. But like I said in an earlier post, this tradition may have to change, and we may curtail our MK-resort hopping if the monorail transportation doesn't improve.

These are a few pictures that I took inside various stores, mainly for the "cute" factor! :)

This last one is interesting because it is from the Starbucks in Epcot and highlights the "little details" that Disney and Disney cast members often pay attention to, and what many Disney guests may often miss.

I was standing in line for a Starbucks (of course), and when I passed by the food counter, I thought that it was very interesting on how they displayed the milk cartons. Because this has Mickey's face on it, the two cartons have been arranged in such a way that it showed the full Mickey's face. Normally, one would expect the cartons of milk to be arranged and displayed in the same orientation. But in this one, it made perfect sense.

We always try to find Hidden Mickeys on every trip. However, on this trip, due to the extra-cold weather and the fact that we came down with a cold, we didn't have the time and the desire to go do our usual Hidden Mickey hunt.

What we did do is revisit a couple of Hidden Mickeys that we already know, with one of them being something we haven't seen for more than 6 years. And without planning it, both of the Hidden Mickeys are on "rocks".

The first one is actually quite large, about 1 ft in diameter. This is on the "rock formation" at Jambo House in AKL. The rock formation is in the viewing area out side of the main lobby.

This one we haven't seen for more than 6 years. It is on the other end of the scale, and about 1-2 inches across. This is at SSR, on a rock along the walkway to the main pool from the Carriage House. It is made up of 3 indentations on the rock. After they erected a fence around the pool area, this can be found just inside the gate on the left. We are glad that they didn't move it after they put up the fence.

I've been a bit slow in editing videos, but here's the first one. This is when we rode 7-Dwarfs Mine Train. We got to sit in the front row this time, which was great for video-capturing, but not so great as in ride thrills. We tend to prefer the back row when we ride roller-coasters. It is more thrilling.

Enjoy!

Another video done. This is Illuminations-Reflections of Earth, with the Holiday ending.

I have superimposed the music to the live soundtrack, because audio track of the video tends to automatically lower the level during the loud parts, especially during the fireworks explosion. However, since I do not have the recordings to the holiday soundtrack, you will have to make do with the live audio (you'll be able to tell the difference).

While we have recorded this many times, this one was recorded in 4K using our GoPro. It is also the widest angle that we have ever recorded this show. While we tried to correct for the "fisheye" effect, it is still noticeable on the edges of the video. The one that I have uploaded is only 720p.

Enough of the technical stuff. Here's the video.

I don't mind admitting that the hair on the back of my neck stood up at the end of the holiday tag. It was equally moving and spectacular.

"Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me."

A few minutes before the start of Rivers of Light at DAK, the Storytellers and their apprentices come out to meet the audience. They don't speak, but do a lot of gesturing. I have no idea what this all means, but we recorded it anyway! :D

OK, so I thought I have one more video to post, and that will be from the Na'avi River ride. Unfortunately, there was some jerk in our boat who decided to be obnoxiously loud in the beginning of the ride, and it kinda ruined the whole thing. So I decided not to edit the video and hopefully record another video of the ride next time we're there.

So with that, I think I can end this trip report. It was a fun trip, even if I did catch a cold in the middle of it. We would have done quite a bit more if it wasn't for that, but it was still an enjoyable time.

As far as food is concerned, we will definitely want to go back to Rick Bayless' Frontera Cuccina, D'Luxe Burger, and the Satuli Canteen. Try to go to Satuli Canteen soon, if you haven't done so. If we go by with Disney's track record on restaurants, it will not be long now before they mess with the current state of the restaurant. I don't know how long those ceramic bowls and real tableware will last, but go eat there soon before things go downhill.

We haven't made any plans yet on when we will go back to WDW. There are talks about going back again in December, which will make it a year in between trips (that's way too long for us). The only consolation right now is that we have already booked a Disney Cruise trip in early September of this year on one of their Alaska cruise! It's a 7-night cruise on the Disney Wonder out of Vancouver. Right now, besides counting the days till the cruise, we are excitedly going over all the port excursions that we want to do and trying to narrow them down before the first date that we can start booking them. And yes, just like our previous Disney cruise, expect a trip report on this one as well! :)

Thanks for reading my trip report. It was fun sharing my "adventures" with you.

On this trip, we made our first extensive use of the mobile food ordering capability from the My Disney Experience app. This capability allows you to order food in advance from many of the counter service restaurants in all 4 theme parks, and at D-Luxe Burger joint in DS.

This is one of the most convenient feature that Disney Parks has ever introduced, and I will use this over and over again whenever I can.

Still, there are a few quirkiness that will need improvements, and I'll try to describe them during this review.

First of all, you may only start looking at the menu available for a particular counter service only when it is opened. So if you try to look at the food menu for, say, Columbia Harbour House, before 11 am (eastern) by tapping on the "Order Food", then you will get a notice that the place is closed. You do not even have the ability to look at the menu without ordering.

If the establishment is opened, then you will be presented with all the items that are available to be ordered, including the price. Note that in many of the main entree, you have the option to choose or change the side dish that accompanies the entree. In cases where you do have to choose you protein, sauces, etc., such as at Satuli Cafe in Pandora, those options will be presented to you clearly.

This is where the second quirkiness came in, and I think this is a bug in the program. At Flame Tree BBQ, I order a smoked chicken, and changed the standard side from cole slaw and baked beans to two cole slaw. After I added that to my order, I made another order of the smoke chicken, but stuck to the standard options of cole slaw and baked beans. The first time I did this, when I got my order, I got smoked chicken with 2 sides of close slaw for BOTH orders.

I thought maybe I had made a mistake and didn't think much about it. But I ordered the same thing again the 2nd time, and this time I paid close attention to what I ordered, and the end result was still the same, 2 smoked chicken with 2 cole slaw for both orders. I looked at the receipt on the tray and sure enough, it said 2 cole slaw for both orders. So the kitchen gave what they were told to prepare, but somewhere along the line, something went wrong. However, this is a minor complaint, but it might signal a bug in the software.

Anyhow, after you've selected what you want, you then place the order. I think that on my iPhone, they used the default credit card that you stored to do your Apple Pay, because you have to first log in or use your finger print when you start your order. So at this stage, this is where you PAY for your order.

When that is done, you will be presented with a screen that has the phrase that says something like "I've arrived and start my order". So until you tap on this, your order will not be presented to the kitchen. This is handy because often times we will still be a distance away from the restaurant when we placed our order, so while we were walking towards the restaurant, I will tap on the button to tell them to start preparing the order. This usually takes 5 minutes or less.

We usually go straight to a table and sit down while we wait. The screen on the app will tell you when your order is ready to pick up. You will need the name of the person who ordered it and the order number. Each of the restaurants within the food ordering system has a special counter to pick up mobile order. If you don't see it, ask. At the pick up counter, you may ask for cups of water (an option not available when ordering).

Like I said, this was one of the most convenient feature of the Disney app. When we were at D-Luxe burger joint, the line to order food was all the way out of the door. All we did was to find a table, opened the app, and then ordered food. In less then a minute, we were told our order was "ready", but what happened was that when you go to the mobile order counter, they give you a location pager (and your cups for your drinks). You get your drinks, go back to your table, and then wait for them to bring your order to your table. All the while, plenty of people were standing in a slow line just to order.

If you are not familiar with this feature, learn it quickly by the time you get there. It is simple, and intuitive. You will be glad that you are aware of it because it saves you the aggravation of standing in ANOTHER line at WDW. This food-ordering feature kills the excuse of standing in a line to order food many of the counter services. They just have a few bugs and features to work on, but other than that, this is a welcomed convenience for someone like me who does not have the patience to stand in line.

Zz.

Now I wish they would getting it working for the dining plan!

I'm sure this has been mentioned elsewhere, but in case people missed it, the new update to the MyDisneyExperience app (at least the one for iOS) included a note which specifically mentioned that mobile food ordering will now take the dining plan!

So your wish has been granted! :p:joyfull:
