Trip Report 2017 WDW Holiday Trip

Hello Friends!

We are less than a day away from our trip to WDW. It's been several months since our last trip there. In fact, it was a rather short trip last April where we still managed to do our first Wild Africa Trek.

This time, it will be a longer trip, slightly more than a week. Of course, we will be doing MVMCP, a dinner at Boma, and also the DVC Moonlight Magic at Epcot. This will also be our first trip there since Pandora opened, and we have fastpasses for the two attractions there. So this will be a fun but busy trip.

As usual, I'll try to report live from where we will be and what we will be doing. And Donald is all set and ready to go. He's in his festive, holiday outfit already.

We have a very early morning flight out tomorrow, so we will be turning in rather early tonight. I just know that I won't be able to sleep much tonight!

Been following along. Coincidently, we stayed at SSR 12/3 - 12/9. I loved the weather until the last day when the cold front passed through. We went from shorts and t-shirts on Fri. night to bundled up to the max on Sat. morning. Out of curiosity which section of SSR were you in? We were in Carousel which was great for the buses but wasn't so great when we walked down to the Carriage House or Turf Club (which was very good) for dinner.

We were also staying at the Carousel. We had a vehicle, so it wasn't a big deal to go to the Carriage house, and we tend to drive everywhere except when we go to MK. That's the only time we'll use the buses.

On this trip, we made our first extensive use of the mobile food ordering capability from the My Disney Experience app. This capability allows you to order food in advance from many of the counter service restaurants in all 4 theme parks, and at D-Luxe Burger joint in DS.

This is one of the most convenient feature that Disney Parks has ever introduced, and I will use this over and over again whenever I can.

Still, there are a few quirkiness that will need improvements, and I'll try to describe them during this review.

First of all, you may only start looking at the menu available for a particular counter service only when it is opened. So if you try to look at the food menu for, say, Columbia Harbour House, before 11 am (eastern) by tapping on the "Order Food", then you will get a notice that the place is closed. You do not even have the ability to look at the menu without ordering.

If the establishment is opened, then you will be presented with all the items that are available to be ordered, including the price. Note that in many of the main entree, you have the option to choose or change the side dish that accompanies the entree. In cases where you do have to choose you protein, sauces, etc., such as at Satuli Cafe in Pandora, those options will be presented to you clearly.

This is where the second quirkiness came in, and I think this is a bug in the program. At Flame Tree BBQ, I order a smoked chicken, and changed the standard side from cole slaw and baked beans to two cole slaw. After I added that to my order, I made another order of the smoke chicken, but stuck to the standard options of cole slaw and baked beans. The first time I did this, when I got my order, I got smoked chicken with 2 sides of close slaw for BOTH orders.

I thought maybe I had made a mistake and didn't think much about it. But I ordered the same thing again the 2nd time, and this time I paid close attention to what I ordered, and the end result was still the same, 2 smoked chicken with 2 cole slaw for both orders. I looked at the receipt on the tray and sure enough, it said 2 cole slaw for both orders. So the kitchen gave what they were told to prepare, but somewhere along the line, something went wrong. However, this is a minor complaint, but it might signal a bug in the software.

Anyhow, after you've selected what you want, you then place the order. I think that on my iPhone, they used the default credit card that you stored to do your Apple Pay, because you have to first log in or use your finger print when you start your order. So at this stage, this is where you PAY for your order.

When that is done, you will be presented with a screen that has the phrase that says something like "I've arrived and start my order". So until you tap on this, your order will not be presented to the kitchen. This is handy because often times we will still be a distance away from the restaurant when we placed our order, so while we were walking towards the restaurant, I will tap on the button to tell them to start preparing the order. This usually takes 5 minutes or less.

We usually go straight to a table and sit down while we wait. The screen on the app will tell you when your order is ready to pick up. You will need the name of the person who ordered it and the order number. Each of the restaurants within the food ordering system has a special counter to pick up mobile order. If you don't see it, ask. At the pick up counter, you may ask for cups of water (an option not available when ordering).

Like I said, this was one of the most convenient feature of the Disney app. When we were at D-Luxe burger joint, the line to order food was all the way out of the door. All we did was to find a table, opened the app, and then ordered food. In less then a minute, we were told our order was "ready", but what happened was that when you go to the mobile order counter, they give you a location pager (and your cups for your drinks). You get your drinks, go back to your table, and then wait for them to bring your order to your table. All the while, plenty of people were standing in a slow line just to order.

If you are not familiar with this feature, learn it quickly by the time you get there. It is simple, and intuitive. You will be glad that you are aware of it because it saves you the aggravation of standing in ANOTHER line at WDW. This food-ordering feature kills the excuse of standing in a line to order food many of the counter services. They just have a few bugs and features to work on, but other than that, this is a welcomed convenience for someone like me who does not have the patience to stand in line.

The first night that we were there after we arrived was spent at DS, and we got a chance to walk through the Tree Trail that they had set up over there. This is also the place where they moved the meet-and-greet with Santa to, although you need an advanced "reservation" to get to see him.

This is where we entered the Tree trail.

We passed by Santa's place, but he wasn't there at that time.

Of course, the main reason to be on the trail is to look at all the trees decorated with the different themes. So we started our stroll.

This was our first trip to WDW where the bag check was required to get onto the monorail. I fully understand why they are doing it, and it did make it feel "safer" to be on the monorail. Not only that, it made getting into MK a lot faster after getting off the monorail.

Unfortunately, it made boarding onto the monorail from the various MK resorts to be a lot more tedious. Each of the MK resorts do not seem to have the capability to handle large crowds, and the lines getting through the bag check were long, both in size and in time.

If this doesn't change or improve, the main casualty to this will be our tradition of resort hopping during the holidays. We do not want to do the MK resort hopping anymore to look at the decorations/gingerbread houses. It wasn't fun anymore, and by the time we did our last resort at the Grand Floridian, we were dreading getting off the monorail to go into GF just because we knew that we will have to go through that long bag check line after we were done to get to MK.

We're sorry to see our long-standing tradition during our holiday trips dies, but the aggravation that we went through wasn't worth the effort.

Yah, I'll bet quite a few other guests also had the same experience.

Obviously, they can't implement my idea, but I was thinking that a possible compromise might be if they could issue some sort of "pass" like an electronic "code" on your wristband or park ticket (maybe with a 2-hour window), so that once you've been bag screened at say (the Contemporary), you'd then wave your band at a touch spot machine at the monorail, and it would go to "green" at the entry gate (a separate line would have to be created). This would allow immediate passage via monorail to both the Poly and GF, without a 2nd and 3rd bag check.

Oh well, wishful thinking I guess! ;)

We had dinner at our most favorite place to eat in all of WDW - Boma at AKL. So here are a few photos of the food found at the buffet.

The carving station. You had to make several trips to get more than just a piece of the roast, which was a bummer.

Here are some other offering that I sampled:

Most of the time, I almost parked myself in front of the soups/stews station. In fact, I made 3 trips to this, mainly for the Cape Malay lamb curry stew, which was DELICIOUS!

It was interesting, because only a couple of weeks before the trip, I watched a TV show (probably Andrew Zimmern's Delicious Destination series) that covered the history of Cape Malay, and how folks from S.E. Asia were brought over to S. Africa during the 1800's and settled there, bringing their food tradition along with them. So tasting the lamb stew here gave it a bit of a cultural/social context of the background story on how something like this will be within the "African" theme.

Of course, we also had desserts.

Needless to say, I was VERY full by the time we walked out of Boma. We had to "rest" a bit in the lobby of Jambo House after the meal. But it was so worth it!

Gorgeous pictures! On my way to city we fly out of right now-heading to WDW tomorrow for New Years and collect the DCP kid when her program ends.

Satuli canteen is probably my favorite QS! What did you think of FoP?

FoP is definitely an E-Ticket ride, but I don't think I want to stand hour and a half for it. If I were to describe it, I'd say if Soarin' had a baby with Star Tours while watching Tron, the baby will look like FoP.

The river ride attraction at Pandora, btw, is not worth the wait. Any wait longer than 20 minutes will be a disappointment.

Happy New Year!

While we were on this trip, we heard news that Flight of Wonder at DAK will be closing at the end of the year, and that it will be replaced by a show where Russel (from "Up") will be learning about various birds, etc. So we decided to see Flight of Wonder one last time before it went away.

Here are photos from our last viewing of this show.

For this set of pictures, I'm calling them as "Happy Holidays from Living With The Land". These are all the holiday decorations that I managed to snap a photo of inside the greenhouse while riding the attraction.

I always like it when they decorate for the holidays.

However, what Disney giveth, Disney may also taketh away. I was disappointed that the miniature village at the Germany pavilion was not decorated:

It looks bare and sad. Compare this from a couple of years ago when there were cute, miniature holiday decorations and Christmas trees:

So Disney parks need to bring back not only these decorations, but also the gates of winter that used to adorn the entrance to World Showcase during the holidays.

See, I'm not asking for much!
