I wonder what the opening ceremony will be like.
It's shaping up to be a brilliant event. The Fisht Olympic Stadium itself looks incredible, as it will be able to open with mountain views on one side, and a sea view on the other side.

This facility should allow for an incredible, state-of-the-art opening ceremony.

"Lavelle calls Fisht the world's largest theater, complete with a track system that allows big opening ceremony sets to fly through the "vast internal spaces of the stadium." The design also welcomes temporary hangers at either end to serve as staging locations during the opening ceremony. A huge false floor and extra tunnels built into the lower seating tier will allow performers to enter and exit the "underworld" beneath the false floor, all while supporting water, light and pyrotechnics for the opening ceremonies."

A fortunate projected change in weather pattern for the Sochi area in early February. Looks like we can put to rest any fear of warmer temps. disturbing some skiing competitions.

"With it now less than a month away from the opening ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the weather pattern in the coming weeks will bring colder air to the area.
Despite the recent dry and mild weather pattern, the next few weeks will yield colder air and more snowfall, prime conditions for prepping the Caucasus Mountains for the Games."

Still a chance temps. could turn to the mild side as the games progress, but if enough snow is accumulated early on, it would make little to no difference.

I would think the Winter Olympics will return to North America for the 2022 games. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking Denver, but turning down the 1976 Winter games might preclude them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_Winter_Olympics and that the USOC has spent a lot of money in Salt Lake for venues. After all the money spent on Sochi, Salt Lake might be a good choice since all the venues are already built. Same goes for Vancouver, and in a lesser way Lake Placid. Quebec would be a great choice too.

My understanding is that the bid cities for 2022 have already been announced. Stockholm, Beijing, Krakow, Oslo, Lviv in Ukraine (Also a host city for Euro 2012) and Almaty in Kazakhstan are the applicant cities. Those six cities will be narrowed down to candidate cities in July of this year and then, July of 2015, the decision will be made.

The US, on the other hand, is looking at 2024 or 2026 for hosting the games.

Thanks. I would think the USA would have a great shot at the 2024 Summer games. It's been a long time since they were here (1996).

Krakow would be an interesting choice.

Considering that South Korea will host the 2018 games, I sincerely doubt Beijing will get 2022. It would be mind-blowing if they did. Sweden has interestingly never hosted an Olympic games. Then again, neither has Poland, Ukraine, China or Kazakhstan. I don't know. I honestly think the Sochi games will play a huge impact on the Eastern European candidates of 2022. I mean, it's fair to say there has been some controversy with Sochi. If things don't go smoothly, I would not be surprised if the IOC stays away from Eastern Europe for 2022.

If Kazakhstan gets it I would think the bribe money to the IOC is still flowing.

We're looking forward to the Olympics, as always. While I'm mostly a ski jumping, hockey, and bobsled fan, I'll watch anything.

I could see Oslo getting the 2022 games. The 1994 games in Lillehammer went off very well, and Norway is swimming in money.
I agree. I would like to see it go to Oslo.

I wouldn't mind a Denver winter Olympics some year.

When I first saw those pictures, I thought it was the Seahawk's stadium.
Watching today's Seahawks/Saints game, I could see the resemblance a lot. Never really thought about it until you mentioned it.

I always look forward to the Olympics. I've been lucky to go to two Games as a spectator (Turin 2006 and London 2012). Was going to go to Vancouver 2010 but it was too expensive.

Personally, I find it quite nice of the IOC to offer me a holiday destination every couple of years!
