2008 Spring Break Trip

Okay, so after lurking the Trip Report forums for years I am going to attempt my first ever trip report (please be gentle). I guess this would be a bit of a pre-trip report since we don’t leave until this Friday (that would be 2days 23hours and 55 minutes according to my trip countdown clock on my computer). Just a warning before you go on… I tend to ramble.

The team: Me (39), DH (42), DS (15), DD (12) (That’s all of us in my Avatar)

This will be our 11th trip to Disney and the first time we will be staying off-site which has me just a little nervous. We’ve always been soooo lucky with our trips and staying on property. We always seem to have something magical happen each trip. There was the free limo ride to the airport one trip and being the only people in the Judge’s Tent in Toon Town dancing with the Characters at midnight at New Years and so many more. I keep telling myself this trip will be just as magical but in different ways.

Because of my job and the kids’ busy schedules over the summer we are relegated to Spring Break trips. We are used to the crowds by now and have been enough times we don’t feel the need to accomplish every little thing. We have our favorites and are very happy with doing just those.

We always drive. I am definitely NOT a fan of flying. I’m the female equivalent to John Madden I guess. So we have a 16 hour drive ahead of us from Central Illinois. We’ve rented a 5br/4ba house outside of Disney. I do have to say it will be nice to have separate bedrooms and bathrooms. When we originally rented the 5br we thought we were going to have another family with us but they have since back out. I’m not sweating it too much. More room for us to spread out.

Here is the itinerary:

Saturday 3/8-Check in after 4, unpack and hang at the house. We have our own pool and hot tub and I’ve paid the extra to have it heated (we are wimps). If I get too antsy to get to “Disney” I’ll talk everyone into going Downtown. DS and I want to hit the Virgin Record store. I usually save my money up to buy old Disney movies. I have my list ready! I’m sure I can get them cheaper somewhere else but it’s just the thought of being at Disney and buying Disney movies. I know I’m a nerd.

Sunday 3/9-Magic Kingdom Day…we always have to do MK first. My husband has to get his Casey’s fix then we have to ride HM. That is a tradition I won’t let change! We have done this since trip #1. We haven’t been on HM since the refurb. I can’t wait! We have ADR’s for Tony’s that evening (my pick). We’ve never eaten at Tony’s so I’m hoping we catch it on a good day. I’ve seen such mixed reviews on it.

Monday 3/10-DHS Day…This is one of our favorite parks. The whole family loves RNR. We used to be really big fans of the Backlot Tour until they ruined it. We have a lunch ADR at Sci-Fi (DS’s pick).

Tuesday 3/11-Veg day….We are just going to hang out at the house and veg this day. We have to save our energy up ‘cause I talked the DH into THE PIRATE AND PRINCESS PARTY that night. YIPEEE!!! I couldn’t believe I talked him into it. But when I told him it was kind of like MVMCP he was sold. We did the Christmas party one year and loved it. If you are going too we’ll be the ones not dressed up. DH has already requested to eat at Cosmic Ray’s that night

Wednesday 3/12-We are driving over to Tampa. DD’s request was to hit a beach and DS wants to see Tampa Stadium. Before my grandparents passed away they lived in Port Richey, FL and we would always go to Tampa when we came to visit so it will be nice to get back there. We aren’t going to do Busch Gardens. Nobody seemed interested.

Thursday 3/13-Another Disney day. Not sure if it will be Epcot or AK.

Friday 3/14-Last full day in Florida and our last Disney day. Again either Epcot or AK depending on what we do Thursday.

Saturday 3/15-We have to check out by 11 and if we haven’t gotten our fill of Downtown Disney yet I’m sure we’ll stop here before we head out of Orlando. DD has requested to eat at Rainforest Café so if we don’t do that while we are at AK I guess we’ll be eating at DD.

Well that's the plan. The only other thing we might throw in is that Pirates Dinner Show. Not sure when we will fit that in though. I'll be sure to update everyone and share pics when we get back!

Thursday-3/13

It’s Gulf day. We started a lot later than DH wanted to but it was an easy trip over to Tampa. Our house was right on 27 which took us right to 4 and we headed west. Our goal for the day was the beach and then a drive by the Buccaneers Stadium. We are HUGE football fans! I live football everyday…I am the football secretary at a University here in Illinois (and NO it’s not U of I-YUCK)

So we head to Clearwater Beach. Um being we left so late we cannot find a parking space to save our lives. Now if we didn’t drive an Expedition we may have found something but there were no spots a large SUV was going to fit in on the side roads. After driving around for a half hour we got frustrated and started heading south on 19. We went to the first beach we could find. By that time it was close to 2 in the afternoon. Note to self…if the beach has “Rock” in the name it’s not going to be pretty….I don’t think this beach had any sand what so ever it was all broken shells and rocks.

But DD and DH put their feet in the Gulf.

DS sat on the blanket with me and listened to his IPOD. We had packed lunchmeat in the truck so at one point the three of them head back to get something to eat. Just a little background information on my DH before I go on….he likes to feed birds. He just has to feed the birds when we stay at Caribbean Beach, he feeds the birds popcorn in the parking lot at AK (over expensive cars), etc. Well I had figured he would bring back bread with him. So I basically patted him down when he came back to the beach. He didn’t have anything. So I’m lying on the blanket minding my own business and then all of a sudden here come the gulls. He made the kids bring the bread back! I’m assuming this is Karma getting back at me for tricking him into the World Showcase. So we are swarmed by the gulls. The people next to us on the beach were not really happy with us. Then we spot this little guy..

Poor thing L I think he got extra bread because we felt sorry for him. So once the birds were fed DS is totally bored to death so we head back to Tampa to find the football stadium.

Once we got to the Stadium we found out there were soccer matches going on so we couldn’t really look around too much. I played Mean Mom and said I wasn’t paying $25 each (the price of a ticket to watch soccer) just to go in and see the inside of the Stadium. DH was not happy with me. Oh well, he got over it.

We had gotten home early enough the night before that we were actually close to hitting a park at opening. This is unheard of for our family but we wanted to ride Everest first thing so we rolled into AK about 9:15 and headed right to Everest to get FP’s. Stand by line was posted as only a 20 minute wait so we decided to hop in line. It definitely wasn’t 20 minutes, more like 10 at the most. The line was moving so fast we didn’t have time to enjoy the museum. Okay, so one ride on Everest down. We still had time to burn before FP’s were good. DD wanted a little snack so DH suggested DS and I get back in line for another ride on Everest if we wanted. Well we finally “discovered” single rider lines. Oh yeah! We were on and off before they even got back from their snack run. Time for FP’s came we were on again! Yipee! 3 rides on Everest in probably an hour. It was awesome! Now 3 rides on any roller coaster is about my limit. It starts catching up with me. So I sat and waited while the other three got back in the SRL. I think DS got 5 rides in. It was awesome! We finally decided maybe it was time to see other parts of the park and get some other things done so we headed over to Dinoland and walked on Primeval Whirl and Dinosaur.

It was about time for all of us to be hungry so as we headed over to Kilamajaro we stopped and ate lunch at the Flame Tree. I miss Tusker House. Don’t get me wrong Flame Tree is good but the atmosphere in Tusker House is so cool to me. After lunch we headed over and did the Safari then walked Pangani. The safari was really good. A lot of the animals got up really close to the vehicle. On the trail, gorillas were very active as were the meercats. I got hooked on that Meercat Manor on Animal Planet so it was neat seeing them so active. I definitely took a whole lot of gorilla and meercat pictures.

After that we headed towards the front of the park and did Bug’s Life. That was about all that we had earmarked for at AK. I kind of wanted to see Nemo but there’s always next time. I don’t see that show closing for a while. As we headed out to the tram DD’s eagle eyes spotted Webkins at the cart outside the gate. UGH, they are everywhere. So she made her choice and we were on our way back to the house. On the way home from the park we decided we would try the Pirate Adventure Dinner. DH had been eyeing this for a while now and I still kind of felt guilty telling them no at Tampa Stadium. So that meant we had to run home freshen up then head back into Orlando.

The show was just okay to me (heehee I sound like Randy Jackson). It was definitely not the caliber of a Medieval Times. DD got to participate at the end so she enjoyed herself. I think the guys like it too. I-4 was definitely a treat on the way home!

Saturday 3/15

It was check out day already. Man time flew fast! We did so many different things this trip we hadn’t in the past. I am now torn between staying on property vs. off. It was soooo nice for everyone to have their own bedroom and bathroom. The private pool thing was also a definite plus. We really didn’t utilize the kitchen very much. I made it know I was on vacation and didn’t plan on doing any cooking! It was nice to have the full size fridge though. Our house was right next to the community Clubhouse so it was a very short walk to use the computer and the clubhouse facilities.

My only concern about the house was security. I know you are never totally safe anywhere, even Disney, but we came back to the house one night and it was very obvious a “couple” had helped themselves into our pool enclosure. :veryconfu A little unnerving to say the least.

The only other drawback I can name was that we put a whole lot more miles on our car than usual. It sure is nice to park your car once you get to Disney and take the bus everywhere.

We had a really awesome time! After a stop in Gainesville to check out the Swamp

we drove straight through. Again, something we’ve never done before.

Great trip report! Pretty awesome to see a picture of Congo River Golf on there and that you played there...we played there on our 2004 trip and enjoyed it. But our personal favorite is the Pirates Island course by Walmart and Medeival Times. We have a tradition of playing there on every trip.

We'll have to try that one out next time. I think we all enjoyed doing some non-Disney things this trip. In all of our trips we had never been on 192 :lookaroun
