2008 Spring Break Trip

Okay, so after lurking the Trip Report forums for years I am going to attempt my first ever trip report (please be gentle). I guess this would be a bit of a pre-trip report since we don’t leave until this Friday (that would be 2days 23hours and 55 minutes according to my trip countdown clock on my computer). Just a warning before you go on… I tend to ramble.

The team: Me (39), DH (42), DS (15), DD (12) (That’s all of us in my Avatar)

This will be our 11th trip to Disney and the first time we will be staying off-site which has me just a little nervous. We’ve always been soooo lucky with our trips and staying on property. We always seem to have something magical happen each trip. There was the free limo ride to the airport one trip and being the only people in the Judge’s Tent in Toon Town dancing with the Characters at midnight at New Years and so many more. I keep telling myself this trip will be just as magical but in different ways.

Because of my job and the kids’ busy schedules over the summer we are relegated to Spring Break trips. We are used to the crowds by now and have been enough times we don’t feel the need to accomplish every little thing. We have our favorites and are very happy with doing just those.

We always drive. I am definitely NOT a fan of flying. I’m the female equivalent to John Madden I guess. So we have a 16 hour drive ahead of us from Central Illinois. We’ve rented a 5br/4ba house outside of Disney. I do have to say it will be nice to have separate bedrooms and bathrooms. When we originally rented the 5br we thought we were going to have another family with us but they have since back out. I’m not sweating it too much. More room for us to spread out.

Here is the itinerary:

Saturday 3/8-Check in after 4, unpack and hang at the house. We have our own pool and hot tub and I’ve paid the extra to have it heated (we are wimps). If I get too antsy to get to “Disney” I’ll talk everyone into going Downtown. DS and I want to hit the Virgin Record store. I usually save my money up to buy old Disney movies. I have my list ready! I’m sure I can get them cheaper somewhere else but it’s just the thought of being at Disney and buying Disney movies. I know I’m a nerd.

Sunday 3/9-Magic Kingdom Day…we always have to do MK first. My husband has to get his Casey’s fix then we have to ride HM. That is a tradition I won’t let change! We have done this since trip #1. We haven’t been on HM since the refurb. I can’t wait! We have ADR’s for Tony’s that evening (my pick). We’ve never eaten at Tony’s so I’m hoping we catch it on a good day. I’ve seen such mixed reviews on it.

Monday 3/10-DHS Day…This is one of our favorite parks. The whole family loves RNR. We used to be really big fans of the Backlot Tour until they ruined it. We have a lunch ADR at Sci-Fi (DS’s pick).

Tuesday 3/11-Veg day….We are just going to hang out at the house and veg this day. We have to save our energy up ‘cause I talked the DH into THE PIRATE AND PRINCESS PARTY that night. YIPEEE!!! I couldn’t believe I talked him into it. But when I told him it was kind of like MVMCP he was sold. We did the Christmas party one year and loved it. If you are going too we’ll be the ones not dressed up. DH has already requested to eat at Cosmic Ray’s that night

Wednesday 3/12-We are driving over to Tampa. DD’s request was to hit a beach and DS wants to see Tampa Stadium. Before my grandparents passed away they lived in Port Richey, FL and we would always go to Tampa when we came to visit so it will be nice to get back there. We aren’t going to do Busch Gardens. Nobody seemed interested.

Thursday 3/13-Another Disney day. Not sure if it will be Epcot or AK.

Friday 3/14-Last full day in Florida and our last Disney day. Again either Epcot or AK depending on what we do Thursday.

Saturday 3/15-We have to check out by 11 and if we haven’t gotten our fill of Downtown Disney yet I’m sure we’ll stop here before we head out of Orlando. DD has requested to eat at Rainforest Café so if we don’t do that while we are at AK I guess we’ll be eating at DD.

Well that's the plan. The only other thing we might throw in is that Pirates Dinner Show. Not sure when we will fit that in though. I'll be sure to update everyone and share pics when we get back!

We caught the first song on the way out of the gate. It looked excellent! To be quite honest I had tears in my eyes. Yes, I'm a sap!

Bare with me…I will try not to ramble too much heehee

Departure day-Friday
We had reservations in Chattanooga and had planned to be there about 10 or 11. Mother Nature didn’t want to cooperate with us and started dumping snow on us about the Illinois/Kentucky border. White-out conditions at times. It was falling fast and heavy. We saw some plows in Kentucky but by the time we got to the Kentucky/Tennessee border we quit seeing plows. There were points we saw cars in the ditch every quarter mile. I’m just glad my husband was driving. It was basically one lane and speeds were as low as 30 and as high as 50. Needless to say it took us a couple extra hours to get to Chattanooga but we did make it!

Saturday
Woke up and it was still snowing UGH! Lighter snow though. It snowed on us ‘til about Atlanta. Day two was smooth sailing. We weren’t in a huge hurry as we couldn’t get into our house until after 4 anyway. I love that new “back” way into Disney. We try to avoid I-4 at all costs. So we get to Orlando and get our keys. We went through Lowery’s. Didn’t take long at all to get the keys and be on our way to Clermont. The house was just a little bit farther out than we would have like but it really wasn’t too terrible. The house was in the Glenbrook Subdivision and we were right next to the clubhouse (that was nice!). The kids picked their rooms and we got unpacked. DD wanted to try out the pool but it was a bit chilly that day. We had paid for heat in the pool but in reading all the literature on the house the heat doesn’t kick on until the air temperature reaches 55. Bit of a rip off I feel. I paid for heat it shouldn’t matter what the air temperature is. That is really my only gripe about the house. Other than the pool heat it was nice that everyone had their own bedrooms and own bathrooms. So we were of course itching to do something Disney. We only got 4 day park hopper passes so we didn’t want to waste a day so we went to Downtown Disney. DD’s pick for a restaurant was Rainforest so we could do a little shopping and eat there. Hmm Saturday night it’s not going to be busy right :brick: We got there and got our name in at about 7pm..our seating time wasn’t until 9p.m. So needless to say we did a whole lot more looking around the shops until type-A DH got all worried they might be ahead of schedule. They weren’t of course but we stood around an hour. We were all so hungry and tired when we finally sat down to eat. It ended up my dinner did not sit well with me. It tasted funny the first bite. I should have sent it back but I was starving. I was sick before we left the restaurant. :hurl: It was definitely a very looonggg ride home for me. I totally passed out when we got home.

Sunday-3/9
MAGIC KINGDOM HERE WE COME!!! We hit the park and of course we timed it so we could eat at Casey’s then hit Haunted Mansion. This has been our tradition since trip #1. DH loves Casey’s! (pic of Castle from inside Casey's)
100_0417.jpg

I couldn’t wait to see the improvements on HM. I was sooo NOT disappointed. I ADORE the bride room. I love the way the heads disappear. Too cool! The staircase room is super cool too! Definitely two thumbs up on this rehab.
We then headed over and got Fast Passes for BTMRR. The line wasn’t unbearably long so we went ahead and jumped in line. By the time we got done riding the first time it was Fast Pass time so two quick rides and we were happy campers.
Headed over to Pirates, DD wanted to ride the Magic Carpets so she and I went on that and the boys headed over to the Tree house for a quick tour. Next it was off to Tomorrowland…line for Space Mountain was way too long so we decided to save that for Pirate and Princess night. We jumped on the TTA. Again, we are corny people so we really like to ride the TTA each trip. (from the TTA)
100_0442.jpg

After a trip around Tomorrowland the kids and I went on Buzz. It was time to eat again! My restaurant pick for the trip was Tony’s. We’d never been before. Holy cow I’ve never seen so much spaghetti on one plate! Very filling! DH and I tried to recreate the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp. The pic didn’t turn out very well. When we got done with dinner DS got a text message from a buddy who was at Epcot with his mom and another friend and they were headed over to MK for Extra Magic Hours. We stayed near the front gate area to meet up with them. They hadn’t been on HM since rehab either so we all went and rode together. Next we went to see Philharmagic. It was getting late by that time and we figured things would start to fill up since it was PM Extra Magic Hours so the four of us headed back home.

(One thing I noticed was they were handing out wristbands for EMH so I’m guessing the showing of the room card/key didn’t work out to well.)

Cool pictures. I love how you are so organized. When we go we just play it by year and that kind of bugs me because I like everything to be planned. But I like to just have fun and do what we want too. I like your tradition too! I want to start one but my family doesn't want to haha. Can't wait to hear more.

Monday-3/10

Since we had ressies at Sci-Fi (DS’s pick) for lunch we were off to DHS today. On Sunday when we met up with my DS friend and the rest of his group we found out they were planning on being at the Studios today too and had never eaten at the Sci-Fi so I called and added them to our reservation. They made it to the park before us and the two boys in the group got RNRC Fast-passes for themselves and since friends Mom doesn’t do roller coasters they used her ticket to get DS a Fast-pass. So once we got to the park it was right to RNRC so DS could ride with his buddies. DH and I got ourselves FP’s DD didn’t want to ride. She’s really hot and cold on this ride. Sometimes she really wants to ride it sometimes she doesn’t. DH waited for the boys at RNRC and the girls headed over to Sci-Fi.
Our res time was 11:05 which is right at opening for the restaurant. We were seated almost immediately. As I was texting DH to let him know that we were already in the restaurant they were walking in right behind us. All 7 of us were able to fit in a car. After lunch we walked on Star Tours and GMR. The boys and I went back to RNRC while DD and friends mom went to walk through One Man’s Dream.

Hubby and I used FP’s and the boys rode single rider. They were like one limo in front of us. Now I love RNRC but I hate sitting in the back on this ride. It takes forever to get through the loops and it always feels like you are going to fall out. Well guess where hubby and I got stuck…yep in the back. So DH was partially deaf in one ear for the next hour.

The other 3 in our party hadn’t been on Backlot Tour in a few years so we all went on that. I so wish I would have gotten pictures of the little boy behind us during Catastrophe Canyon. This poor little boy was so scared when everything started shaking and caught on fire. He was trying to climb over everyone to get away from the water once it started falling. He’s probably going to need some serious counseling. I’m a terrible person I know but it was hilarious to watch.
DD found a MGM Studios jacket she really liked in the AFI gift shop. I was surprised to still find MGM stuff! At this point we broke away from the group that joined us. They were headed back to their resort. They were staying at the Yacht and Beach Club. We told them they had to go try a Kitchen Sink while they were there. They hadn’t heard of it so we had to explain.

The 15 yo DS announces he’s hungry again. Ugh it feels like we just ate…but we head over to Pizza Planet to get a snack. Kids play some video games while DH and I get food and find a seat outside. It was a GORGEOUS afternoon. Warm and sunny! After snack we decided we had done all we really wanted to do at the Studios and the pool at home was calling DD’s name so we headed towards the front gate. Guess what time that was…yep, parade time! Ugh it’s terrible trying to get out of there during a parade time. We were just to the corner by the gas station when Block Party started to roll. We watched the first couple of songs then headed to the tram. Wow what energy! We were at the “end” of the parade so we had the Bugs Life characters in front of us. I, of course, was in tears with the little we saw. Such a sap!

Made it back home and DD did a little swimming. We decided to do some miniature golfing and get some dinner. As we are leaving the house DH’s cell phone rings….another family from the same town as us is in Orlando too (we had originally thought they would be sharing our house with us) and their car wouldn’t start. They were in a strip mall on 192 down by Arabian Nights so we headed that way to give them a jump. They wanted to do some miniature golfing too so we decided to meet up after they had some dinner. While they ate we hit the NIKE outlet store there on 192. Everybody but DH found something. Funny thing is he’s the one that runs in our family.

We met up with the other family at Congo River Golf and then went back to their condo for a game of Apples to Apples and some Wii bowling and golf. We rolled out of there late and picked up some fast food on the way home.

(I kind of felt sorry for the little aligators they had at the miniature golf place)

Tuesday-3/11

Like I said today was “veg” day. We knew it was going to be another late night as we had tickets to the Pirates and Princess Party. (We love the “hard ticket” events since we know we’ll be able to just walk on everything!) DH and I ran to the grocery store in the morning. We had thought about going to Tampa tomorrow so we stocked up on beach supplies. That afternoon I got some sun by the pool while DD swam.

The family we rescued the day before was going to the Party with us. They hadn’t been to MK in like 5 years. DH likes to “escort” people around the park so he was going to be in heaven having them with us.

We started out late afternoon to Disney. We went to Downtown Disney first. DS and I requested a stop at Virgin Records. I had my Disney movie wish list with me and they had nearly everything on my list. Yipee!!! We decided against going over to the Marketplace side and opted for early dinner at Planet Hollywood instead. Other family had never eaten at a Planet Hollywood. Dinner was good and we had a really good waitress. At one point another one of the waitresses came over to ask my husband if he was in the military. She had bet our waitress $1 that he was. Well he was a National Guardsman for years. Quick side story…One time at an Olive Garden our waiter said to my husband..you are either a cop, in the military, or a football coach. Ironic thing is my husband is all three.

We got very lucky and by the time we were done eating it was time to head to MK!
100_0485.jpg

Of course everything was walk-on. I think we rode everything that was open. We didn’t stop for any of the goodies or the parade we just went from ride to ride. We rode Splash two times in a row. We were soaking wet from the first ride and were laughing so hard from that we just stayed on and got wet again.

We took a break from riding rides to watch the fireworks show. I just have one word….WOW! What a freaking show that is! I was truly amazed and awe struck. I of course tried to take pics but am a terrible shot. Here are the only good ones I could find….
100_0514.jpg

100_0524.jpg

I had never seen Stitch so we went to see that. We had a poor kid totally freak out during the show. Man he was screaming loud kind of glad he was on the other side of the room.

Hmmm, okay I may have lied about riding everything that was open. I’m looking at the list of what was opened and there was quite a bit we didn’t ride…I do know we rode/saw: Dumbo, Tea Party (I skip the cups), Buzz, Space Mountain (3 times), Speedway, Stitch, TTA, Pirates, BTMRR (3 times), Splash (2 times), Haunted Mansion and PhilharMagic.

DH needed another Casey’s fix so as the kids and I rode BTMRR for the last time DH and the other family headed to Main Street. Once we got off the roller coaster we headed to Main Street to meet up with them. I had told myself I was going to try a Dole Whip that everyone on here raves about but the line was just too darn long so I opted for some ice cream from the Plaza Parlor. New fav…(since they took away my tollhouse cookie ice-cream sandwich:cry:) Dulce de Leche YUMMM!

By the time we got done snacking it was time to head out of the park.

Yahoo I'm on a roll today....

Wednesday-3/12

As I said earlier we had planned to go to Tampa today. Well that didn’t happen. Late nights were catching up with us and people didn’t start moving until early afternoon. So we decided to put off the beach and head to EPCOT instead. I couldn’t wait to ride SSE and I had seen pictures of the retro shirts so I was definitely finding and purchasing one of those!

DH’s plan was to do our “can’t miss” rides (which is basically Soarin’, Journey, SSE and Test Track) and get out of there. He didn’t want to do World Showcase, which of course I did, so I had to gently remind him we hadn’t been on Gran Fiesta since the rehab so he conceded that we at least needed to go to Mexico. So after getting the “can’t misses” in we head over to Mexico. The Gran Fiesta was just okay to me. Not sure what I expected but of all the post-rehab rides we went on this trip this was my least favorite rehab. As we are leaving Mexico I got lucky and the always hungry 15 yo announces he’s hungry and wants a burger from Liberty Inn. So we leave Mexico and very quickly walk over to Liberty Inn. There was no stopping anywhere on the way. DS got his burger and DD got ice cream and we all had something to drink. I then announce I want Fish & Chips so hmmm guess we have to walk all the way through World Showcase (heehee I’m evil) I got my Fish & Chips and we sat on a bench next to the Rose and Crown. We were in earshot of Off Kilter. I remember sitting on that bench eating my fish and thinking this was just one of those perfect Disney days. The weather was awesome and the tunes of Off Kilter were in the air. Ahhhh bliss! I still smile just thinking about it.
100_0542.jpg

100_0544.jpg

DD took those pics. It's sad when a 12 yo takes better pictures than you do.

DH was ready to head out. We had accomplished everything but shopping….Mousegears here I come. Found the retro shirt I wanted and the beach towel DH had seen at one of the carts. DS picked out the Spanish monorail speech t-shirt (I may have to borrow that one sometime). We then headed back to the house. DD got some more swimming in. DH comes in the house and says come quick and bring your camera. I’m wondering what the heck he’s up to…he wants to show me the 2 crane like birds walking right in front of the house.
100_0553.jpg

I’m assuming blue herons but not sure. They were just casually walking the neighborhood. We ordered food in and watched some of the classic Disney movies I picked up from Downtown.
