2007 Photography Contest Ideas

Since the topic has been brought up in the current contest, I figured I'd get the ball rolling with my thoughts on the contest themes for next year. The quality of the photos submitted this year has gotten increasingly better with each contest. I hope most people agree. To that end, I think we should think about having contests that really challenge us and raise the bar, while still allowing us to have fun with it.

Here are my contest ideas:
  • Theme park contests without a picture of the "icon" (e.g.: Magic Kingdom contest without pictures of Cinderella Castle)
  • Character Abstract
  • Lines
  • Motion
  • Neon
  • Rain
  • Special Event contests (Flower and Garden, Star Wars Weekends, Food and Wine, MNSSHP, MVMCP, ESPN Weekend, etc.)
  • Contests for each of the lands and/or major attractions in each of the parks
  • And of course we should bring over the contests that were so successful this year (nighttime, signage, Disney icons, rides, etc.).

I know I have other ideas, and I'll add them later.

Yes, these ideas aren't the common run-of-the-mill snapshots that everyone takes; but I think that's the point we've come to, which is a great thing. No, everyone probably won't have an entry for every contest, but that's fine. But by publishing the list at the start of the year, it can be printed out and taken when going to the parks so we can look for new shots for the contests.

In addition, I think that some post-shot adjustments made to the image in a photo editing program be allowed as long as the modification is applied to the whole image. This includes levels, conversion to black and white, hue/saturation, sizing/rotating, curves and cropping. This is common editing used to clean up an image. If there's a question about an image, the original image (without modification) can be submitted to the moderator for comparison to ensure that heavy modifications weren't done to the submitted image.

Just my brainstorming; please feel free to agree or disagree. I am thrilled that the contests have come so far and constantly make me think about the shots I take when I'm at the resort. I want to thank everyone for raising the bar for me and forcing me to go out and try to improve my photography techniques.

I think I remember in the last thread like this someone mentioned the light fixtures of WDW. I have been noticing them much more since that was mentioned, and I think it would be a fun one to do.

*forgot to check the list of upcoming contests before I posted this, so if it's coming...nevermind* :lookaroun

Water features could be fun.

Going along the lines of DizWiz' "motion" ....feelings/emotions:
  • anticipation

I am going to Say Hidden Gems, a contest of things in the parks that the average guest doesn't see, no icons, ride entrances, etc. Only things hidden away that make Disney the greatest!

Like overlooked attractions or something along those lines? I like it :)

Some good thoughts there DizWiz. I'd also like to see some themes that are a bit more challenging/specific but I found your suggestion about general photo "processing" more interesting. I'd be for it. I see nothing wrong with generally editing a shot to enhance or better convey its mood. "Spot" editing where content is being changed is different though...that should always be forbidden unless there's a contest theme specifically calling for it.

Good suggestions, everyone. So where's NibblesNBits now that we gave her a lot more work to do? :)

Obviously things like park/attraction/land/resort themes are good

- monorails
- postcard shots
- water features
- palm trees
- statues
- AAs
- transportation
- weather (in general)

I think someone has already suggested MNSSHP, but how about people in costumes (not CMs) at the Halloween party. We saw some fantastic costumes last year - unfortunately we didn't get any pictures.

Sorry...Nibblesandbits didn't realize this page existed.

I really do like the suggestions...and keep them coming! I can use all the ideas I can get.

However, I don't necessarily agree with allowing people to "enhance" their images. By allowing this, it can really cause problems and it isn't fair to those who either a) don't have programs that allow them to modify their images and b) some people have absolutely no skill modifying their images, so it gives an unfair advantage to those who do. These contests are available for anyone and I want people with whatever skill levels they have to enter...whether they are novice or professional.

I'm not trying to be picky with this...as I would love to see the photos to continue to grow and get better, but I believe that we need to keep the "enhancing" out of the contests and only allow minimal things such as cropping. (And trust me...I would love to be able to change some of my pictures too...especially to B&W...but it isn't fair for me to do it. I'll just have to remember to set my settings on B&W more when I visit the World.)

  • InfraRed theme (must have been shot with an IR filter)
  • Other People taking photos
  • Crying kids (The parks are full of them... why not find photo "beauty" in it?)
  • Insects of Disney
  • Babies
  • Buses of Disney
  • Food
  • Reflections

Wouldnt someone being a pro also have an unfair advantage in these contests? Or someone with more experience than a beginner have an unfair advantage over the beginner?

Many (most new ones) digital cameras shoot RAW files. RAW must be edited in order to convert it to a visible, linear format like JPG. Technically anyone who shoots raw would be breaking the 'no editing' rules.

What's the next rule, no raw files?

I usually don't shoot raw at Disney since I take so many photos I would rather have the space, but what if I did? I know many others do shoot raw there. I don't see a problem with submitting them into the contest. Almost every digital camera comes with editing software.

Also, everyone who gets film developed at the local 1hour lab has their image color and brightness corrected automatically by the developing system. thats "editing" too, during processing just like RAW files.

I'm all for a B&W contest. Many cameras can shoot B&W internally, or many RAW convertors can process directly to bw. Is there an advantage to either? Not really. Also, theres free programs and websites which will convert images to B&W. There's also cheap C41 B&W process film that 1hour labs can develop.

Theres a difference in digital manipulations, and image enhancement.
* Brightening or color correcting white balance is one thing... enhancing.
* Making an entirely new image or concept from an image... manipulation.

Where's the line drawn? And do you handicap the 'pros' or more experienced amateurs? Do you say "no film photos from 1hour labs since they are automatically color corrected"? Do you say "JPG" output only from digital Cameras?

Personally, I'm more afraid of a local Orlando person with a season pass who can go and shoot the "perfect" shot any day they please vs someone who may have a shot that fits but it is too dark or too light etc. (They have an unfair advantage =).

This is for fun... remember.... and the world is full of unfair advantages. If it was a contest to win something, it would be different.

I understand what you're saying...however, you will have a lot of people who will then try to push the envelope with "enhancing" their photos.

I will admit...I don't know a whole lot about how these digital cameras actually work...what I am trying to do is to keep things from getting gray around here. And to me...by allowing people to enhance their photos with color correction and the like...that gets in a gray area.

I know that people nowadays like to make their photos better. I understand that, 100%. But it's not like you're getting a prize for having the winning photo.

And I'm not trying to handicap the pros or more experienced amatuer...however, if you do have that kind of ability, you shouldn't be needing to enhance your photos anyway. (Just my humble opinion. Obviously, not everyone is going to agree with this.)

This is where digital manipulation stood in the previous photo contests:

Not counting watermarks, If you can do it in a darkroom, then it's ok. What does that mean? Enhancements are ok, but you can't add/remove elements from a photo.
