2004 Baseball Predictions

I hope not. They're lineup is great. As far as pitching goes though, other than Mussina, they're pitching staff is average....and a downgrade from last season.

Edit: I've noticed that there are some Phillies fans on here....I forgot to mention that I went to the first exhibition game at the new park on Saturday. It is awesome! You guys will be in for a treat when you go see a game there!

The Yankees are going to have to really count to their hitting this year, with this pitching staff. As a New York fan, I hope that the pitchers deserve more credit than I've been giving them and that they prove me wrong. I really doubt that Mussina is going to be able to carry the team. He's no where near as reliable as the guys last year.
Im really starting to think that the Rays are going to give them a run for their money this year. They have a decent team and some guys who have seen a postseason before. Plus the Tampa area is really trying to get the fans in to it this year. The game I'm going to tonight, the home opener, is expected to be the 2nd sellout in the teams 6 year history.

I agree with you about the Yankees pitching staff, but I'll guarantee you at least one trade will be made and they will score a ton of runs this season. You might see a lot of 9-5, 10-6 ballgames.
As for Tampa, I'll wait and reserve judgment. I've seen a lot of guys go there and go straight down the toilet with their careers. Hopefully, Lou Pinella will turn things around for them. And what is it about Tampa and their sports franchises--the Rays, the Bucs, and the Lightning all have been the laughingstock of their leagues, though the Bucs did win a Super Bowl after 27 years and the Lightning finished first in their conference this year.
Team to watch in the AL East: Baltimore, but their pitching is gonna have to come from nowhere.

Oh I do not doubt that Cashman will make more than one big trade this season. At this point he is going to have to. Even with the Brown/Vazquez/Mussina combo, it still leaves Contreras/Osborne and Lieber (if hes EVER healthy) You know that with Contreras that those games are will either be lost or the bullpen will get that win. He did GREAT last spring, but by the time the season came around he stunk. If I were Cashman, I'd be kicking myself for having traded our Top pitching prospect (Claussen) last season, and for the Lilly/Weaver trade.
Talk about the the creek without a paddle.Tampa just wants to win 70 games. Not a hard goal, but it would be nice if they reached it.

If Brown stays healthy and Vazquez can live up to his billing, that's a dominant three right there. But those are also big IF'S. We'll all just have to wait and see how it unfolds. Pennants are not won and lost in April, though it doesn't hurt to get off to a good start.

Im not doubting them at all. They are both extreamly good, and come with good records. Im not judging them until I've seen what they can do. Its Contreras and Lieber who have my doubts. Any yankee fan knows what Contreras can do, be it good or bad. Lieber is coming off Tommy Johns surgery, so that can go either way, but he has been out for awhile.
Im just glad that Steve Karsey will be back at some point this season. They needed him last season in the pen.

and I really don't know about anyone else. so like every year, I pretend the two chi town teams meet up in the world series. and every year I cry when then dont. then it is football season, and I get to cry over the bears.

I know its only one game, but 6 pitchers last night and some sloppy play...I think the Yankees need to trade for some pitchers. We let too many get away. They should have never traded Lily & Claussen. There is alot of potential on the team, but they just don't mesh very well. The Rays looked very good; I hope Pinella can bring them together and make a run for it.

Well hopefully things will start to turn around for Mussina, so that he can finally get that 200th win of his.
Maybe the Japan trip was a little harder on him than most people thought (in addition to missing the first week of spring training didn't make that trip easier either). I feel really bad for him.....on another board I post at someone said that in the post-game interview he looked like he was almost about to cry. 
But I agree that they should trade for more pitching. I hope they don't, since I'm an Orioles fan, but that's besides the point. :lol:

Drift: I saw a great ad for the Ford F-150 last night.
Curt Schilling is hitchiking on the side of the road...and a Dodge Ram pulls up..."Need a lift?" and Curt says, "No, I'm all set, thanks". A Chevy Silverado picks up "Need a lift?" and Curt says, "No, all set, thanks"...then a Ford F-150 is driving and they show Curt's thumb go out...and he hops in. The driver says, "So, where ya headed?" and Curt says, "Boston...I've gotta go break an 86 year old curse"
(Then there was another one with Curt Schilling trying to speak "Boston"... :lol: "I pahked my cah...I'm going to Hahvid Yahd. I'm going to the ballpahk...wicked cool" )

I did some poking around, and found this very funny commentary on the Schilling/Ford ad at a baseball-related blog:
There is a ridiculous Ford commercial (for the F-150) airing here featuring newly-minted Boston television star Curt Schilling (he's in a Dunkin' Donuts ad here too - also terrible). For those of you who haven't seen it - I'm sure it's not on the air in other markets - I'll give you a taste. Schilling is standing in the desert (presumably a ways from civilization, we can't see anything but desert), conveniently next to a sign that says something like "You are leaving Arizona". He's either traveled on foot to this point (though there's no noticeable wear in his clothes or appearance) or been dropped off by someone who was either unwilling or unable to leave the state. He's apparently on his way to Boston (we don't find this out immediately, but he does have a single duffel bag with him that says "Boston Red Sox" on it), and is attempting to solicit a ride from a passing driver. This is illegal in Arizona, but never mind that.
By the grace of God, two cars drive by almost immediately that are willing to offer him a ride. The people in Arizona (or those who leave Arizona) seem like humanitarians. He takes a look at each of them (a Dodge and a Chevy), and declines. He's apparently waiting for something specific - of course, it's the Ford F-150. He can't bring himself to be a passenger in anything else, even though he's stranded in the desert, thousands of miles from his eventual destination. Thanks to an incredible stroke of good fortune, a Ford F-150 actually does pass by! The driver kindly offers Schilling a lift, and he accepts (climbing aboard without so much as a "thank you"). The driver asks Schilling where he's headed, and we finally have our suspicions confirmed - he's heading for Boston. Just up the road - sure enough - there's a sign indicating the exact number of miles (2697) to Fenway Park. I know I was wondering how Schilling physically got from Arizona to Boston (a man who's made more than $50 million in career certainly wouldn't be flying or have his own car)...now we know at least part of the story. I trust Ford won't leave us hanging, and we'll see many more true-to-life, captivating chapters of Schilling's cross country journey.
