Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

Brief update - called Pat back & confirmed the res, confirmed alcohol is extra (bringing the total price into the V&A range unless we concierge ourselves pre-dinner! - which may happen!) and I chose the 5th floor. I did not ask to see it in advance because I really had made up my mind that the 5th floor was preferable to us for reasons already mentioned.

Psyched! (But need more Chase points!!!)

Congrats on the store success. Do you do online sales? Because I would definitely support your business if you do.

Absolutely we do!

I started the biz 17 years ago and at that time it was 100% ebay. Didn't open the physical store until 6.5 years ago. Been shipping all over the world all these years. Now we sell at our store, on Amazon, on ebay, and a little bit on our own site, although that's never been particularly fruitful. It functions more as an information page for the locals to find our location and more information (and could use an overhaul right about now.)

I added this particular Mickey record to the site just now, and a special coupon code WDWMAGIC for anyone on this site to get $5 off (it will only work on this item) and shipping is $3 anywhere in the US. (We're selling them on Amazon for $24.99 so it's a good deal.)

Thanks for asking, @BuddyThomas or I would feel weird promoting my own business here (one of those people!)

By the way, again, there are not a lot of items listed on the site, but we have tons more in the store and place orders almost every day which arrive in one or two days - so anything you want that's in print I can get, and usually at better-than-Amazon pricing. Records, CDs, turntables, video games, what have you.

I'm not going to call this a trip report, but my father-in-law rented a house in the Hamptons for the week and invited us up with one of Brian's other brothers & sister-in-law.

I took a few odd pics along the way but they're on my phone and I'm on my laptop right now LOL. The usual conundrum: type fast vs. easy uploading of pictures.

Anyway, we got Trysch the puppysitter for 5 days and she agreed to come 3 times a day instead of twice because of Kylie seeming kind of stressed last time we took a short trip. That makes me feel a little better. She got a little extra gift card in her pay.

Backing up just slightly, I had until Wednesday to get the store mostly ready for Black Friday, had a houseguest and dinner guests for Thanksgiving (redid the guest bedroom in the days leading up) went back to the store Thanksgiving night to mostly finish getting ready, had a solid Black Friday while Brian drove 3 hrs up to Melbourne, FL for his nephew's wedding the next day. I drove up Saturday morning. Brian had to leave right after the ceremony to drive home to go to work. I stayed for the reception and drove home that night. I can't even remember Sunday other than going to price a record collection and catch up on shipping. Had my second epidural injection on Monday, and then picked up that 3,500 piece record collection on Tuesday (stupid, stupid) and brought it to my store. Wednesday morning, dropped B's car off for service and ubered to the airport, flew into Newark (rain, flight delayed, blah blah blah) and actually had a really nice dinner at Mom's in Jersey with my sister & her son, my brother and his two kids plus his new wife and my newborn niece (adorable, happy, friendly baby!) This was my first time meeting the wife as well. (There had been tension for a few years, water under the bridge.)

Mom basically did all my favorites (I haven't been up in a few years) Ronzoni Fusili (the only real fusili) with homemade gravy (that's red sauce to some of you) with pork in the gravy (my ultimate favorite) plus the usual meatballs & sausage. It really was exceptionally good. When we got there (late because of the flight) she started re-heating things and my sister goes, "Sure, nobody heated anything up for me when I got here" LOL. And my brother goes, "We all had to drink room temperature water because you don't like cold water." LOL. (Like you couldn't put ice in it?) It was good-natured, and frankly, getting a little special attention out of that house is not the norm for me, so it was nice. (And no, I never drink iced water, always room temperature.)

Not to mention banana muffins (favorite) and sugar free brownies for Brian (very nice, his own family doesn't do that.)

I had already sent up gifts for all the kids, mom wrapped them for me, and we gave those out that night. Every one a hit, and I think only one was not Disney-related . That was Mikey who got a lego set. His sister Ava got some kind of Sleeping Beauty playset (I don't even remember what I ordered at this point.) Noah got my favorite, the Olaf Snow Cone Machine (which is basically the old Snoopy Snow Cone Machine that I always wanted and never got, but with Olaf on it.) And the baby got a Minnie Mouse...now I have to look this up, I think it crawled or something...OK the Minnie Mouse was this https://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_004W006639117001P and the Sleeping Beauty thing wasn't that at all, it was Belle's Be Our Guest Dining Set.

And new wife made a great first impression by giving us...a Disney gift card. :greedy: (We were not expecting anything, we basically just do gifts for the kids as a rule.) I'll have to do a revised little green number total post thingy soon.

After all this, about 8PM, we drove 3 hrs to Southampton - the house is big and gorgeous, and went right to bed.

Yesterday, Brian's brother arrived, we had a nice big pot of chili, a couple of oodles of wine, and went to bed as the discussion started turning to politics. (After Fox "news" was on the TV all freaking day long, and the oodles of wine - that's a precise measurement of wine meaning IdontreallyrememberhowmuchIdrank - my tolerance was low for all things Trump-related.)

We were planning on doing something fun all together for Brian's birthday tomorrow, like a wine-tasting, etc. - but his Dad just went out to the pet store and got in a car accident. He's in the hospital but OK, we think just broken wrist. The car (which they drove up from FL) is pretty bad and likely totaled. I've already offered to let Brian fly home alone to go to work as planned Sunday night, and I could stay Monday to drive them home in a rental. We'll see how it goes. They're still at the hospital and I'm here with Pico, the little tiny white terror dog who peed on the rug (and is the reason Dad had to go to the pet store.) Dad is insisting everything will go on without interruption, but that is really not important now, and we'll just see how he's doing tomorrow.

First, the good news: we're going back a day early! (sort of.)

We have Saratoga Springs booked for the 13th to the 15th. (You know we always end up leaving early on departure day.)

On the chance the DVC rental will be ready early in the day (though I hear that's unlikely) we decided to drive up the night before to take full advantage. So we booked our usual Crown Club Inn for Monday night (this Monday night, as in 3 nights from now!)

We CAN drive up earlier on Monday, it all depends on if we want to leave Kylie alone longer and bug Trysch the sitter for another day. (Tune in Sunday to see if we moved it up to Monday morning LOL.)

Also, haven't done an update in awhile, will keep it simple: Chase Visa points: $636.04 and DVA $402.04 so that's a significant savings towards the 2017 anniversary trip!

We're going to use the $50 gift card we got for Christmas on this trip, and severely restrict access to those Chase points. (The room is paid up already.)

Looking forward to hanging out with old friends Gwyn & Lou at the Flying Fish with bartender Craig - bringing everything full circle, as they are the ones who are related to Craig and first sent us to the FF, and surprised us with a gifted wine pairing for our dinner there years ago. That will be a blast in itself.

And the not-so-special news:

My store got hit last night. They broke one of the glass entry doors, made a bee-line for the cash register, and probably got a whole 40 bucks out of there. (We don't keep big bills in the store and often run low on cash in the register. Fortunately, we were low!)

They did not seem to touch the merchandise. $200 vinyl box sets were ignored. Our computer and POS system were ignored. They were only after cash, and God love 'em, they sure as heck didn't get much of that.

OTOH, a brand new door is $2K. Replacing the glass in the door is looking more like $1K and a few weeks with the door just boarded up as it is now. And I let my insurance lapse over the summer, but it had higher than a $2K deductible, anyway.

The police said they got "very good fingerprints" from the door frame, the fixture in front of it, and the cash register. The thieves moved an outdoor video camera before their little escapade.

If there's any chance to prosecute, I absolutely will. It was a weird feeling to hear about this when I first did, and I did not get on scene until after it was boarded up and cleaned up, probably for the best. (Just so happened I had physical therapy this morning and wasn't there.) But other than what it's going to cost me to fix, I'm pretty OK about it. Could have been much, much worse. They could have gone on a vandalism spree, or just wrecked things trying to get in and out - turntables, records, etc. Someone else could have come by after they left and just helped themselves to thousands of dollars worth of records very easily. It's amazing that didn't happen, actually.

Tree is up. (Got rid of the 4 footer to fit all our Disney ornaments LOL.) Home with the pup, and all is well. Brian is on his way home.

Three more days...

So sorry to hear about the break in. I'm glad that you and your staff came out of the whole situation safe. A door is easily replaced...there are other things that aren't.

I was looking at your website just the other day, and I shared it w/ my stepson who is really getting into vinyl. With any luck he'll share the info with his friends too.

That stinks. So sorry to hear about the breakin - hang in there....you'll be in your happy place soon.

We'll also be up next week. We have a weekday pass - think you both do too, right? So no entry on weekends. We're actually using the weekend to try something new - a side trip over to Crystal River...gonna snorkel with Manatees - first time ever. Should be interesting - and cold! :jawdrop:

Hope your trip is a blast - you so deserve it. Can't wait to read your TR if you're doing one when you return.

So sorry about the break-in! Glad your loss wasn't any worse.
I'll keep my eyes out for you guys next week. :)

Yes, we have the weekday pass also. If we find ourselves up there on a weekend, we'll usually hit Disney Springs.

We (I) tend to semi-live report most trips. I forget everything by the time I get home LOL.

The only things we have definite so far (in case of completely accidentally bumping into you guys @SSH or @Tuvalu ) is a late (9PM-ish) FP for Frozen (first time riding it) on Tuesday, the 13th, and a no-ADR barstool date at FF sometime Wednesday evening. No other fastpasses or reservations have been made, although there will definitely be a (first time also) stop at the Gingerbread House at GF as a prequel to the GF Anniversary trip LOL. (I may overthink things here or there.)

Monday will either end up just a "get there and go to bed" day, or a "get there and go to dinner" day, or a full day, if we set it up that way. Not going to wake B up early after working a game on Sunday, but I'll check Trysch's availability tomorrow. (surprise.)

Hmmm...ending with the GF on Thursday before heading home may be the way to go, with a nice breakfast/lunch as a preview. (We'll be back before September, but still.) I have a meeting Thursday afternoon back home at 5PM, so we'd have to go right after lunch at the latest.

All the more argument for going up earlier on Monday...

And thanks to everyone else about the break-in. If it had to happen, it was probably best case scenario. I figure it was "our turn." In the summer it would have hurt more. At this time of year, it's a little easier to absorb.
