Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

OK, that was the first post of this whole thing. Now here comes the table of contents. Separate trip reports will be listed in bold. Regular stuff won't.

Tony, I will be there during your dates! :D

Wheeee!!!

Can't say I'm surprised ;)

T & T: 2.0!

Fifty-three dollars???!!! Holy cow, what a great price!! :jawdrop: (Is this the Inn that you can take Kylie to as well? I can't recall what place you stayed before that dogs/pets were allowed with the guests.) Anyway, I don't remember the last time I reserved a guest room anywhere for $53! Ha! Good job!! :D

This one is not pet friendly, but clean, close, fridge & microwave, etc.

The place we used to bring her changed brand, and I haven't researched a new pet friendly - most aren't so friendly if your dog is bigger than a purse-puppy

So let me get this straight. You get go have 500,099 trips during your trip report, and all I get is 3 NIGHTS next week?!?!???????? My main trip is going to be over before 37 of your mini trips begin.

I call foul!

I also call kidding. ;)

Have a great time!

You will have a jam packed 3 nights and we all can't wait to read about it!:bookworm:

So...is The old photo pass still up and running? I looked into memory maker. Apparently it's $150 for 30 days, unlimited pictures.

This is with the anniversary trip in mind. We are terrible about getting our pictures taken and I want to make sure it happens on this trip. But we definitely don't need 1 million pictures. Can we still just use the old photo pass system and then just purchase a la carte a handful that we really like? Or are those like $20 each and then you still might as well get the memory maker LOL

Possible (probable? likely?) UPGRADE alert!

For our little trip next month...turns out we know a friend of a friend who not only owns a bunch of DVC stuff but also is a Disney travel agent.

So for a very little bit more than what we were paying for the Crown Club Inn...I just put in a request, should hear back shortly (probably shouldn't be posting this yet) but hopefully getting a 1BR at Saratoga Springs. This will be our first deluxe stay ever. Excited to learn there are a bunch of other options available for future trips (Kylie may never go to Orlando again )

This will probably not affect the big anniversary trip next year - I think I can still do better saving up points and getting AP discount through Disney for GF. But this December trip is looking better! Will let you know when I hear back for sure.

Time for some more diligent research LOL.

EDIT: Hooray, it's confirmed!!

Yes and yes.

If your AP is one of the new ones, however, the Gold and Platinum passes include all of your PhotoPass pictures at no additional cost.

Oops. I got a frozen fast pass but it's for 5:45 PM on our last day and I had no intention of staying that late.

just signed on and lucked out - got a Frozen FP for Tuesday night 8:55PM to 9:30PM. Canceled the Thursday afternoon one - you now have a chance to grab it LOL.

Waiting to hear back from someone at the GF about the intimate dining for September. So far left two messages and no call back:banghead:
Curious to know which kitchen does the cooking for the event, and how soon it can be booked. Prices quoted on the first call by the person who does not do the booking was $125 per person plus $100/hr for a butler. Interesting. I'm told it's typically on the 3rd floor, but if the 3rd floor is full, it can be on the 5th floor also.

Got the call! Pat, who handles all the intimate dining, was very sweet. The deets:

Booked the intimate dinner for 9/7/17 (the day before our actual anniversary which will hopefully be at V&A's.)
So obviously there is no 180 day restriction for booking, you can book it anytime, and there are limited spots.

Dinner is on the 3rd floor outside balcony, weather permitting, or inside on the 5th floor if weather is bad. (I may try to get a peek at this on our December trip, especially since I'm already planning to take Brian to see the gingerbread house.)

She said people usually time it to the fireworks; the schedule is not up yet, so we booked it for a certain time and then can change it earlier or later if we want to. She said it is a "limited view" of the fireworks, and she actually likes the view at around sunset, so that's another option. (Sunset is nice and late in September - and I assume probably pretty close to when they would plan Wishes, right?)

Pricing was correct: $125 per person plus $100 for the butler. (We'll have a butler!) She said it comes out to about $415. (more Chase Visa points, please!!) It's all about making memories, people! (But hell, I could buy new kitchen cabinets for all this LOL) Points, points, Chase Visa points. (Keep Calm and Earn Points.)

There is no dress code.

I asked which restaurant on the property acutally makes the meal, and she just said, "the main kitchen."

They give you a menu the night of, and you choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert. She is working on a nice no-sugar added/sugar free dessert for my hubby.

...and Brian has no clue!!! sssshhhh!!!

So I guess that leaves afternoon tea for the 6th.

I found all new things to do - hooray!!

You may have to get your "peek" from the outside. The main building is club level access only and you need a room key for the elevator. I am guessing the balcony used does not face the MK which accounts for the "limited" fireworks view. It probably overlooks the resort grounds and Seven Seas Lagoon more towards the Poly. Still a lovely view though. :inlove: Wishes will be either 9 or 10 pm, usually 10 if it is a weekend night.

This sounds like a delightful experience!

Oh, this is so exciting!! Never knew anyone who has arranged for this special dinner (love the idea of your very own butler!! :joyfull: ) O.k. Let's practice our butler spiel: "Jeeves, we'll have our aperitifs now." :D :hilarious:

Email received from Pat at GF re: the private dinner:

"Good Day Mr. C!

It was a pleasure to speak with about our Intimate Dining Experience.

I have September 7, 2017 tentatively held for you and Brian.

I just need a credit card in order to continue holding that evening for you.

If you would like to reserve this evening, please give me a call at 407-xxx-xxxx.

For your reference I am attaching our current menu and some additional

Information regarding our two dining locations for this event. Please

See below……………..

This event is 2 hours long and is available for 2 to 4 guests. The cost is $125
per person plus a $100 charge for the Private Server.

The Intimate Dining menu is 5-courses, and includes a chef’s tasting (amuse
bouche) and dessert. Your menu items are selected the night of your dinner.
However, if you would like to start your evening with a toast, wine or cocktail,
please preorder that, otherwise you are welcome to order drinks throughout
your evening.

We offer two locations. Our 3rd floor outdoor balcony, which is the most
requested, overlooks our courtyard, the Seven Seas Lagoon and has limited
viewing of the fireworks. There are no Magic Kingdom views from this location.

If the weather is poor we will move you to our 5th floor indoor balcony.

This location offers a full view of the fireworks and Magic Kingdom castle,

and since it is indoors you are welcome to dance while enjoying our orchestra

and pianist.

Thank you so much and have a grand day!!!!"

OK you guys, so first of all, do Grand Floridian cast members say, "Have a grand day" instead of "magical?" The magic is over.:p

Having never been to the GF, I have a hard time picturing the two locations. (Even if I had been, I'm very bad at that - spacial relativity, directions, etc. LOL.)

So most people get the third floor outdoor balcony. (I tend to not do what everybody does unless it makes sense for us!)

And this will be early September. We go often at this time of year, and it can be truly hot. We live in South Florida, and sitting outdoors to eat is no big deal. We often leave that to the tourists and eat inside. Especially if we are dressed up a bit, I'd rather be comfortable and air-conditioned than risk an 85 degree sunset and sweating through dinner. (Although, we're staying at the GF, so we'll be able to just walk back to our room afterwards and change - or just end the evening. Do you know how much I love that we can just walk back to the room? That's why I'm booking almost everything at GF for this trip.)

Re: the views: @Tuvalu and others who would know - you can see the two descriptions of the two locations. Despite the popularity of the 3rd floor - I'm leaning towards the 5th floor - indoor balcony (so still a balcony/private-ish) - and full view of the MK fireworks. Isn't that better than outdoors in September with a partial view? Anybody? Bueller? Orchestra and pianist?!

Of course, sometimes I think I'm being smart and then realize later that what everybody else does is for a reason and I messed up LOL.

A little guidance would be appreciated! (I may post this on that "intimate dining" thread also, just to get more opinions from people who don't read this thread.)

I'm gong to call Pat tomorrow to confirm with the credit card, but also just emailed back to ask: 1) are drinks included? (including the pre-dinner toast?) and also - the menu she sent me was blank except for the header :bored:

And maybe on our December trip, since we plan to visit GF and see the gingerbread house for the first time (which is when I will tell Brian we are staying there for the big 10) she would be kind enough to meet me and show me the two locations? Is that too much to ask? Am I being one of "those people?" LOL.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable request to me given the spend - it's not exactly a QS meal! But she also may have a brochure pdf or pic in her files of both areas she could email you now so you don't have to wait. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to ask for a photo.

You will LOVE the gingerbread house - we celebrate our Dec anniversary in WDW every year and GF lobby is a must-visit during our trip. I think they also have a few times per day where one of the bakers actually comes out to do a little presentation about how they make the house and gives out free gingerbread cookie samples. :hungry: Yup - you heard right - I said free samples. Something FREE at Disney. :jawdrop: :jawdrop::jawdrop:

Unfortunately, we always seem to miss the timing and arrive after they've wrapped up. It would be fun to catch the preso one year.

Yes, all GF cast members say, "Have a grand day!" :joyfull:

Your request to view the two locations is not at all unreasonable. However I have read other posters comment that Pat is not always the easiest to work with in terms of requests, so don't be surprised if she is unavailable to give you a tour while you are there.

And I would be shocked if this dining experience includes alcohol. If you read the description you posted it does not mention alcohol other than you can preorder and are welcome to order drinks during your meal, but I am pretty sure the GF will be happy to tack your libations onto your final bill. Definitely ask about this!!

As far as location, you have to decide how important fireworks viewing is for you. If a must, then indoors is a no-brainer. Evening rain is always likely in September (and if not rain, you know it will be warm and humid) and if it were me, I would choose indoors simply for the fact that I wouldn't have the last minute stress of "will we get to eat outside or not?" and "Are we going to sweat through our meal?" Orchestra and pianist = additional plus.

Keep us posted!

Thanks, SSH! We meant to do it last year, I don't remember why it didn't happen, probably just in a rush. Making a point of it this year!

You do think like I do LOL. Yeah, I guess drinks are a longshot. We shall see! (TiW?? There's another question. I already asked and there is no AP discount or anything like that.)

Pat has been nice so far. I was slightly underwhelmed with how she addressed the whole diabetic dessert aspect, but I'm giving her a chance on that. I suspect that will be more up to the chef, and I'm hoping he'll/she'll put in a little more effort than a berry bowl with whipped cream, assuming there is access to more in the kitchen.

The fireworks viewing is not so much a "must" as it is a preference vs. a partial viewing. We've never done the Cali Grill thing with the view. We've done the Poly beach. We've done Cosmic Ray's LOL and accidentally caught fireworks there. (ha!)

You know what? We *never* stand there and watch Wishes. We always take that opportunity to hit a bunch of rides with no wait. Maybe we'll have to do that at some point...oh yeah, during this dinner! LOL. Without strollers up my...

Leaning even more towards 5th floor at this point. Thanks for the help!

A view of the Seven Seas Lagoon - would anyone care? o_O
