Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

OK, that was the first post of this whole thing. Now here comes the table of contents. Separate trip reports will be listed in bold. Regular stuff won't.

One more thing - you can't make this stuff up. This article came out the day I was at WDW, but I didn't see it until 2 days ago:

http://www.latimes.com/science/scie...tones-roller-coaster-20160926-snap-story.html

They specifically advise going on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to dislodge kidney stones. May I get a prescription for that? (I know, it's closed now, but when it reopens, may I get a prescription for that? LOL.)

Likely be cheaper for the insurance companies, Hospitals, one place more expensive than WDW.

Let the booking begin!! :eek::joyfull:

Not for our next little bop over to the parks, but for "the big one" :cautious: next September, the one this whole thread started about.

I had a great call just now with WDW customer service. I love it when I get a great cast member on the phone who is genuinely interested. I should have gotten her extension. (I'd say 75% of the time I get a great cast member on the phone anyway.)

This woman is the same age as Brian and myself (all born in the year WDW opened) - and she got married to her husband (same age) in the same year we got married (2007.) :jawdrop:

She was very familiar with the Grand Floridian and really helpful in figuring things out.

So I booked it! Now, granted, this can and may be changed. We booked with no discounts, so at a minimum, we should at some point end up taking a 25% to 30% AP or Florida resident discount. The other option would be to go through orbitz to get points back (and sometimes a better price 15 to 20% off the AP rates) but currently they are showing no availability for my selected dates. (I presume they'll get some inventory as the dates get closer, so I'll keep an eye on that, although it would be all cash - no Disney Visa points.)

The other option I had seriously considered (and I'm still considering) is to rent DVC points (1st time) at a significant savings. The thing is: #1 that would also be all out of pocket. #2 We do require some flexibility of reservation at this point. Brian's schedule will depend on the football schedule (both pro and college) which is not yet available for 2017. And I don't think there's much flexibility in booking DVC points (?) so I'm hesitant to go that route and then end up having to change our dates by a day and have a mess because we can't. 90% sure we will be able to go as booked, but you never know. And as management, he can't miss a game.

So...despite the fact the most I've ever paid for any hotel room anywhere was somewhere around $149 for Port Orleans a few years ago, I booked the 6th, 7th, 8th, (8th is our actual anniversary, a Friday, and we don't have weekend passes.) If we managed to drive up for a half-day on the 5th, we would stay either off-site or at a value. (or maybe CBR if we are truly splurging, I consider that our "home resort.")

I went with a concierge room  at the Sugar Loaf Key building (it's less expensive than the main building, and I specifically wanted something quieter, anyway.)

I didn't know you get assigned a specific concierge cast member  who will call me on March 10th to book other things. I will have to call V&A directly on March 10th to book that (good to know the exact date.)

This is making me very excited! So many things we've never done before, plus we have a Grand Floridian theme (so the Christmas ornament should be a cinch LOL.) V&A, afternoon tea. Would Narcooses be overkill? Never been to any of those restaurants. Maybe we progress from tea on Wednesday, to Narcooses on Thursday, to V&A on Friday - because who is going to want to eat anywhere else after V&A?

Possibly a fun spa thing, although I'm not into most of that. Almost certainly a tour. I'll have to start reading up on those again. Leaning towards Keys to the Kingdom even though I already did it in 2000. Brian never has, and I think it's a great tour, plus I'd like to take advantage of being close to MK. We've never stayed at a resort really close to anything without a bus before. Other top option would be one of the Epcot ones, but for some reason they don't sound as great to me - if any of you have been on both, I'd love to hear your thoughts - I know there are threads about this, too.

Something little to mention - the cast member (I really wish I had written down her name) asked, "What's your husband's name?" with none of the usual hesitation, stumbling, uncertainty. I notice things like that, and appreciate them.:)

You guys just have to make sure I don't talk myself out of it. Nevermind we need to re-tile the bedrooms or get kitchen appliances, OK? It's our 10 year anniversary, it's a one-time thing.

I also suggested Brian open a Disney savings account. :angelic:

This sounds like some exciting planning going on! The GF is gorgeous. I did the "just once in my life I've got to stay there" trip about 8 years ago. I booked 4 days/3 nights (at a ridiculously high price--even with the "special" 25 or 30% discount at that time). But I had to do it--just once . . .

I reserved Sugar Loaf Key as well; and when I got to the hotel, they upgraded me even higher to the Royal Palm Club Level in the main building. If you come in on Magic Express, they meet you at the bus and escort you inside and facilitate your check-in. They brought me up to Royal Palm (for Sugar Loaf Key, I'm not certain if they walk you over there or not, but it's just behind the main building, if I'm not mistaken).

It was a great experience. I also really enjoyed the club lounge for the food selection each day (breakfast, and during the day they had various snack options--all very attractively displayed. In the evenings, they had various types of liquor available. It was so convenient having the lounge right there, especially for breakfast in the morning. (Breakfast was more of continental selection, but they also had other nice additions, to the traditional continental fare.) There were plenty of places to sit at tables up there, and relax. In addition, it was an open balcony view, and in the evenings you could sit by the railing in the lounge above, and watch and listen to the "live" orchestra playing down in the main lobby.

The guest room was elegant, too. All in all, I think it was money well spent for a once in a lifetime experience.

How exciting!!

Kevin and I just celebrated our 5th Anniversary with dinner at Narcoossee's. It is one of our favorites on property! I'm not sure we'll ever do V & A, so Narcoossee's and California Grill are always go to's for us. I enjoyed reading your report as we were there the same time you were (we never did solidify plans for a drink at Abracadabar...). It was HOT! Looking forward to following along on your NEXT adventure!

It was hot! Did you make it to Abracadabar at all? Fun.

I think this will be our first Narcoosee's. We are going to work the hell out of the Grand Floridian and probably never go back LOL.

I'm a little obsessed now – looking at tours, spa, etc.

and we should have at least two little trips before then, so have to be a little thrifty.

OK I think I've ruled out the spa. But check this out:

Grand Floridian Private Dinner
The Grand Floridian will create a private dining experience for couples, with views of the fireworks and a personal butler to attend to all your needs. The dinners usually take place outside in the alcove area overlooking the Seven Seas Lagoon, and dessert is timed to coincide with the Wishes fireworks at Magic Kingdom.

The standard Private Dining meal includes a multi-course dinner. The dinner is for 2-4 people and at last report, it costs $95 per person plus beverages, a $75 fee for the “butler,” plus 18% gratuity, plus tax and service fees. Expect it to run $350 or more for two people. You must be a guest at one of Disney’s official resorts to participate in this experience.

Contact Private Dining at (407) 824-2474 at least seven days in advance to schedule a private dinner at the Grand Floridian.

Interesting idea. I could justify it for a special anniversary. I wonder how much privacy there is (for the experience and cost, I'd like a quiet, romantic space). In other words, would the area get crowded with many other guests arriving for the fireworks viewing, or is this really set off more by itself? I'm not familiar with the exact location they referenced.

That sounds nice! There's a spot at the end of the marina out in front of Gasparilla Grill that looked like a space for events. In fact I think there was an event there one night while we were there (heard activity but didn't look out there). Maybe that's where they do the private dining? I'd be interested to know more about that! Let us know what you find out :)

We interrupt this daydream/trip planning for a special announcement:

We're goin' back!

It'll be short but well-placed. A friend from NJ - actually the friend who is family of the fabulous Craig the bartender at the Flying Fish [not cafe] is going in mid-December. We have been trying to get our trips to coincide for years now, but something in someone's schedule always messes it up. This time, we're available. We're also trying not to spend a lot because V&A, etc., so naturally I first checked the WDW resort reservations with AP/FL discounts, and the lowest was $120 for the values. I don't generally pay more than $75 for the values, so I booked our usual Crown Club Inn in Clermont for $53 (and this time on the reservation, I specified "Building #1.")

We'll be up from December 13th to the 15th. It could have been longer, but there's a lot going on that time of year - Brian's Dad just asked if we want to go up with them to a house he may be renting in Southampton (Hey, @BuddyThomas - a wine tasting? I'll cawl my otha friends in Lawng Oyland.) Anyway, that would be something like Nov 28th to Dec 2nd (and Dec 3rd is B's bday.) And the 24th is Thanksgiving, the 25th is Black Friday (busy day at the Record Store) the 26th is a family wedding 2.5 hours away. So two nights in the World it is! (See how this keeps everything fresh? We can't do everything in any of these 2-3 day trips, so it's not repetitive every time.)

As a compromise, this will probably knock out our usual January trip. Can't do everything!

But we can do what we meant to do last December but never did - visit the GF lobby with the gingerbread house - a perfect preview to the Sept 2017 trip! *Brian doesn't even know we're staying there yet. I could have a lot of fun with this. And I can explore a bit and get ideas.

Woo hoo!

October update:

Chase Disney Points in account plus on redemption card total: $542.12
Disney savings account: $253.92
Random gift card I bought $50

I don't generally pay more than $75 for the values, so I booked our usual Crown Club Inn in Clermont for $53

Fifty-three dollars???!!! Holy cow, what a great price!! :jawdrop: (Is this the Inn that you can take Kylie to as well? I can't recall what place you stayed before that dogs/pets were allowed with the guests.) Anyway, I don't remember the last time I reserved a guest room anywhere for $53! Ha! Good job!! :D
