Pre-Trip 2 Broke Guys (now with Table of Contents!)

Important note: First post edited 7/13/17 to make this odyssey easier to follow!

The reason is I started this pre-trip report over a year ago to help plan our most important trip ever (so far) our 10 year wedding anniversary trip.

However, we have AP's, and we took many short "side-trips" along the way. Rather than creating so many Trip Report threads and looking like a total egomaniac, I just added those mini-TR's into this same thread.

People have said it was hard to follow (I can see that.) Someone suggested putting a "table of contents" in the beginning. So that's what I'm doing. Then you can skip to the pages with the other trip reports, or just read the ones pertaining to "the big one" coming up in early September, 2017.

I will post that trip report separately when it finally happens, but will of course link to it here.

Speaking of linking here, here's a little background. This old post details our vow renewals a few years ago, for a very specific reason. If you haven't read my other trip reports or interacted with me very much on the boards, it kind of sets the stage for what's to come. Here's that link:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...orporate-disney-into-your-vow-renewal.903761/

What follows is the original first post (from 2/11/16) of this long, long thread. At the end of it, I'll put the table of contents to guide you through the rest of the thread.

I am sitting here in a hotel in Tampa, just an hour away from "home." And I'm thinking about it LOL. Oh, am I thinking about it.

When I'm "home home" - in Fort Lauderdale, I never have time to do more than some quick posts because I am always busy with work.

This is going to be a long-@ss pre-trip report.

Not necessarily this first post, but the report as a whole - by necessity, since the trip isn't until early September 2017. And I know I can use some help and advice in putting this all together - it's a very special trip - and have already begun organizing my thoughts based on discussions on this forum.

The basic premise is this: We are going to spend our 10-year wedding anniversary celebration at WDW, with the centerpiece of that trip to be the biggest dinner we can afford at Victoria & Albert's (hopefully the chef's table.) One of the things we enjoy most about Disney in our forties are the amazing meals at places like the Flying Fish Cafe and the Yachtsman's Steakhouse. I expect this meal will be at least as mind-blowing, but probably more.

The catch is - it costs a freaking fortune (at least to us.) I'm estimating something like $600 to $800 when all is said and done(?) And there is no way I could justify spending that much money on one meal.

Except...we have the Disney Chase Visa card, and have come to rely on this for our last several trips. This has opened doors to new experiences that we couldn't afford before. Instead of getting a 4-day ticket, we started getting AP's. Instead of staying off property, we started staying at Disney Moderates. And loved it!

And - we have a year off (sort of) to save up for this magical trip and important celebration. For the last several years, we've been getting the Florida Resident Weekday Select Annual Pass every other year, never two years in a row. I think it's good to go away and miss it for awhile, especially with all the work being done. Stay away for a year and come back to lots of little surprises. (Like those metal detectors! Ha!) They're fine. Anyway, that's the responsible side of me to say we shouldn't spend that much money every year. (We really shouldn't.)

But the advantage of that in this case is to amass Disney Chase Visa card points for months on end (sort of.) We used up all the rest of our points on our last short trip in January of 2016. But then at the end of the month, we earned more money. It's just sitting there...LOL.

Well, I made a deal with myself - if I can save up that $700 or $800 just in Chase points, then I can justify booking that meal at Victoria & Albert's. So that is the first goal. I know somebody will tell me when is the first day I can book it, and I will make a note on my phone so I don't forget LOL.

Based on January rewards being $146.50, I'm thinking this should be cake. (Mmm...cake...)

I'm not saving up for this September, but next September 2017. Total cake, right?!

Then we have to figure out where to stay. I'd like it to be our first Deluxe (possibly on the special floor with the extra goodies) and probably our first DVC rental. DVC Upside - real cost is less. Downside - can't pay for it with Disney Chase dollars LOL. That is funny, but it is a real consideration.

There's the obvious choice - to stay in the Grand Floridian to be where Victoria & Albert's is.

I don't know if that would be my favorite place in general.

I think my favorite place might be the Polynesian - I like the food & the vibe - and the walking into MK. I think that's a must on this trip - have to be able to walk to somewhere. That would include all of the Boardwalk area properties, which are fine with me as well.

Or AK with the Savannah view.

Then there's the corny and sentimental way - 10 years ago, our honeymoon was to Key West. They have a Key West DVC hotel. We love Olivia's. Somehow it doesn't seem big deal enough or have something special like a footpath to MK lol.

At the very least, a monorail resort, even if not walking distance, would be preferred.

Then we have to figure out whether or not to bring the dog or leave her home, drive or fly, diet for 6 months for the pictures LOL. Maybe this one and only trip would be worth memory maker?

I want to really blow it out - something we will never forget. Go for the upgrades. Pick the right tour or tours. So much to discuss!!

I will end each post in this saga like the parodied "2 Broke Girls" TV show, with the dollar amount of whatever they have left or have made at the end of the show, so you can see where they are in their goal.

So for example, tonight's would be:

$146.50

I'll add in any WDW Gift Cards I might buy or receive in the next year as part of what's saved up for that trip. My free BJ's trial period just expired, so I won't be getting any discounted GC's from them.

Now - the potential issue: there is no way we are not going to go to Disney in some way until September of 2017. We are toying with skipping our usual January or April trip in order to go full-on crazy in September.

But we are also toying with things like my dilemma as I sit here in this hotel with all this time to type. We're less than an hour away. I told this story in more detail at the end of my last trip report thread, so I'll just make it very short: Brian is working in Tampa from the end of January until the middle of February (over three weeks.) Yesterday I packed up our pup and drove up to visit, with our Valentine's Day gifts in tow (mostly specialty sugar-free chocolate dipped pretzels potato chips, oreos, plus peppermint bark, etc. We know we won't see each other for Valentine's Day, so basically tomorrow is it, unless I stay until Saturday morning.

Since no WDW trip was planned, I did not bring either my Tables In Wonderland card, or my Chase rewards gift card. But I called, and confirmed I could go to Guest Services and get another gift card (which of course can be loaded automatically.) There's a nice lunch reservation open. There's a spot for the pup at Best Friends Pet Care for 1/2 day care.

On the one hand - this would be something like a 45 minute to 1 hour drive for Brian from 12:30 to 1:30 to go to a special Disney lunch at 1:50, hang out for a bit, and then drive back 45 minutes to an hour to go to work by 4PM until 4AM. (I would have my own car, spend more money buying Disney records for my record store after lunch, go pick up the dog, and drive home to Fort Lauderdale.)

The other option is to drop the pup off at Petco in Tampa for a shampoo, and then hurry to whatever local restaurant is near that Petco, and meh.

Who would ever forget picking up and driving to WDW just for lunch for Valentine's Day (early) There's a fun story to remember when we're in our 60's LOL.

But it would already deplete our current total towards our V&A goal:

$146.50

OK, that was the first post of this whole thing. Now here comes the table of contents. Separate trip reports will be listed in bold. Regular stuff won't.

OK filling in some blanks back at the room on the laptop...

We are here, checked in at Crown Club (building 2 again - ugh) had a nice Crown Royal to kick things off (should have been wearing a crown lol) - and frantically trying to make it in time for the 8:30 holiday drone show at DS!

I really dislike building number 2!! As much as building number one is cute, building number 2 is not (maybe that's why they call it number two!!) The hallways all smell moldy, I want to hold my breath on the way from the elevator to the room.

The room itself is fine - a little older than building #1, but fine. The whole thing feels neglected, maybe because the front desk is in building #1. Anyway, I seriously don't want to stay here again if I'm going to get building #2. (We even requested #1 when we booked.)

Rant over LOL.

I thought Chef Art Smith's place would be kind of interesting. I didn't expect to completely love it. (It may have had something to do with the 2 (oops, yes two) drinks of Crown Royal I had before leaving the room for Disney Springs. On an empty stomach. After driving four hours (what should have been a three hour drive.)

Loved it!!!

The drink you see (mine) is a Basil Smash. It's bourbon with muddled basil (hello, Italian me) with sour mix and simple syrup. I could do without one or the other of those two sweet components, but most people probably like it that way. The drink was delicious, I just prefer a little less sweet. Brian had a beer. (boo.)

Now, you know I have tried a pork sandwich all over WDW. My previous fave (which I still love) is at CBR. Art Smith's is a completely different ballgame - such high quality ingredients. More chopped than shredded pork, which I usually would not prefer - but not one bit of fat on one chopped piece of pork (yay!! Do you have any idea how unusual that is?!) Even the bread was special, can't explain it. Topped with slaw. With the first bite, I realized the level of the ingredients, but the bbq sauce was hidden a little further in from the edge. Holy cow, when I got to that second bite with the bbq sauce - amazing!!!

Brian got the fried chicken sandwich. The fried chicken dinner is Art's specialty, so it would stand to reason the sandwich would be fantastic. It was. (We always sample each other's stuff when we are trying new things, especially if it's really good.) There was so much flavor in the breading, so crispy/crunchy. Yasss.

Both sandwiches come with bbq chips. Our server asked if we wanted to sub something else, and we both did. I'm guessing there was an upcharge for that, but I didn't look at the bill lol. If there was, it was well worth it. Brian got Art's famous mac & cheese. Calling it mac & cheese does not even do it justice. I am so not a macaroni and cheese type of guy (I want my tomato sauce!!) but I had a taste and was very impressed - smoky, crisp on the top, really nice - not that Velveeta-type stuff you normally see.

I got the mashed potatoes with brown gravy on the side. I love mashed potatoes and it is my splurge side. Very creamy, very nice. The gravy had a bit of a bite to it, I think it was sausage gravy. The spice hit you a few seconds later. So good. Probably not the best pairing with the sandwich on my part, but definitely the right order for tonight's first time tasting here.

Service was great. As I mentioned, there were no available reservations in MDE, none, not for any hour. We thought we'd hit the "grab 'n go" section. Just for the heck of it, we walked in and asked if they had a table, and were seated immediately. This was right after the 8:30 drone show, so not quite 9pm. Our server was happy, informative, helpful. And we got our 20% AP discount. The tab was extremely reasonable for such a great time. This is a new fave.

Normally we reserve Disney Springs for when we can't go to a park. (Weekends, since we have weekday only passes.) We decided to go to DS tonight mainly to see the the drone show, and I'm so glad we did that instead of the 11pm closing MK. (For awhile there, we thought we'd do DS first and then MK, but we passed by that Coca Cola place Buddy posted about recently, and I wanted an alcoholic Coke drink LOL. That was also worth the experience. I had a cherry whiskey with lemonade (actually no Coca-Cola) and Brian had what I would call a top shelf Long Island. DS earned it's place tonight as a proper destination rather than a "we can't go anywhere else" second choice.

After a long day of working and driving - we just really had such a great time.

And then we couldn't find the car. LOL.

I told you it was a really great time!! (Don't worry, not that great, Brian was fine to drive.)

Back to the stinky hallway. My goal is to get to the hotel gym before breakfast in the morning, and hoping for an early check-in text for Saratoga. No idea where we're going early - playing it by ear. Working well so far! Miss my puppy. :( And Brian is snoring.

My guess is you won't make the gym early this morning after a long day like yesterday! Save the workouts for when you return home. Enjoy your guilt-free, no workout, vacation!

What's funny is sometimes these trips restart my workouts because it's easy to just walk to the gym on site. Actually I've been unable to go to the gym with the back issues. Even when I go and just do completely non-back related things, there's a very good chance I'll have increased back pain by the next day.

But epidural number two from right after Thanksgiving has been super fantastic! I just woke up and I'm going to at least get on the treadmill or elliptical for 20 minutes before grabbing a little free breakfast. Brian will remain snoring LOL.

So sorry to hear about the break in! Hope everything is fixed up now (I got kind of behind on this thread and don't remember how far back that was) .

Does anyone listen to any other than the Be Our Guest one? I enjoy that one, just looking for a little variety.
WEDway Radio if you like history! They've done a series of great shows recently.

Hope you two are having a wonderful time today!

@Tony the Tigger,

Sorry to hear about the burglary. While living in Miami, we were robbed twice. The first time we were all home - a Saturday evening, in fact the Saturday of the Miss America pageant and it had just started when three armed men broke in. First time, and last I hope, I had a gun in my face. 2nd time, we were out of the house. They didn't get much either time. But our dog sure enjoyed the roast they gave him during the 2nd robbery to keep him occupied. Some watchdog he was....we got him after the first break in. Don't know what my mom was more upset about - the break in or that our dog was eating the roast that was going to be dinner.... on the white carpet in the living room!

Be grateful you weren't at the store. Years later, I still was uncomfortable being in my parents house alone after dark... and they'd moved three times since the robberies, even across the country.

I absolutely do! Yet we are spending our last day in the world tomorrow with said step-child. :jawdrop: :joyfull:

We don't know yet what we're doing tonight! We were supposed to go to FF but FF came to us instead. (Sort of. Will explain later.)

I think we're going to catch the backside of the drone show from our room in a few minutes and then really the only options are Magic Kingdom or Disney springs. So MK it is! Against all advice on magic hours night.

Trying to pick up roughly where I left off...so I went to the hotel "gym" in the morning - they've downsized it to remove the weights. Didn't have a lot of time before breakfast ended, so I just did a little over 10 minutes on the treadmill and another 6 on the elliptical. Meant to do 10, but struggled to do 6. I forget how much certain things have weakened since the back injury. Gotta work on that ASAP.

Back to the AK pic for a moment - the odd looking bag on the dashboard

IMG_3497.JPG

That's something I started doing years ago on my drive around the country. I throw all kinds of nuts, raisins, and carob chips into a plastic bag and let it melt together on the dash. When it cools, it makes a nice, somewhat healthier version of a candy bar. Just break it off bit by bit!

We had a nice time at AK. I felt like my outfit was pseudo-safari, and all I needed was a hat.

IMG_3500.JPG

...oh, and a nice, big amber beer. It was almost noon, after all.

IMG_3502.JPG

Despite the safari hat, we were not feeling super adventurous.

So we basically turned around and bumped into flame tree barbecue. We need some appropriate jokes about flaming, and got in line. This was another first for us, based on so much positive chatter on these boards.

We used the gift card that my brother gave us for Christmas, and sent him this picture with our thanks:

IMG_3503.JPG

We were not starving, so we just split a sampler platter and a side of fries with pulled pork and cheese. ( cheese on the side because Brian likes it but I don't much care for it.)

This was "good, but..." I think my favorites were the beans which had a little kick, and the fries. Any pork was bound to pale in comparison to what we were served at Art Smith's the night before, and it did - big hunks of fat, and by the time we found a seat, started eating, and realized we needed an extra side of barbecue sauce, neither one of us wanted to go back and get it. Not the flaming tree's fault. The ribs were good but also could use some extra sauce, and the chicken was fine on it's own. All in all, worth the stop, probably wouldn't seek it out again. From our seats, I kept wondering what the heck those bleachers were for?

IMG_3504.JPG

Oh, duh - Rivers Of No Light. *sneak peek! LOL.

We wandered around a bit, shopped a bit, noticed any references to Christmas were sparse and mostly not worthy of taking pictures. Except the giant tree in front. Tigger photobomb!

IMG_3506.JPG

By this time it was about 2 PM, and we were ready for our room. We had already gotten a text around 9 AM saying it wasn't ready yet. I didn't expect that early. As we walked out of the park, I was thinking of what I would say to the front desk to politely ask if we would be getting in soon even though it wasn't 4 PM yet. At that moment, this came:

...proving that Disney uses the magic bands to tap into our brains. The conspiracy people were right!

in short, we loved the room. Our first deluxe. Loved the theme - horses and horse racing always remind me of my dad. Thought of him a lot in little ways during this short stay.

And the Victorian design made a great prequel to the big September grand Floridian trip.

The pool was practically right outside our sliding glass doors, which normally I wouldn't like, but the whole place has been quiet as a mouse. I love that.

But now it's almost 4 AM, I woke up at 2:30 AM, started pre-packing, did a little work, worked on this report, and need to nap or nothing will happen in the morning LOL. And I want to finally use that big tub with the jets!

Coming up: the least themeparky theme park trip ever, a little Christmas, the backside of a drone show, and...murder?!?!? Mwah ha ha!

I was very impressed by your dashboard treat bag! That's hilarious!!! Great idea!!! I'm always amazed by what I learn all over these forums--much of it having nothing to do with Disney! LOL . . . :hilarious:

You know, the store-bought stuff is loaded with sugar and other stuff. I use raw nuts which are supposed to be healthier and unsweetened carob chips. The microwave would be too much and it would cook the nuts. Just melting on the windshield does it just right – and yes, the first time was a total accident LOL.

Brian was first to spot this "hidden" Mickey about a minute into the room because he sat on the couch.

IMG_3510.JPG

And when he fell asleep one minute later ("testing" the bed) I set up the Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

IMG_3516.JPG

He was surprised when he woke up several hours later. (I could've gone out and chopped down a real one in that time. In North Carolina.)

And this is on my list for this morning:
