1986 - House of the Future: Week 4

Okay, the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning in favor of a 1960s World Fair... it could almost be Discovery-land esque considering the Worlds Fair was all about what the people of that time expected the future to be like. Maybe it could be located where Galaxy's Edge is now, along the waterfront with lots of opportunities for classic Disney attractions.

Maybe a walkthrough of the animal topiaries. A sort of “garden of unity”. The tower of the four winds should definitely be a large part of this whether it’s an attraction or a “weenie”. I still like the paper craft concept because it’s more separated from reality. This is a land for smaller children, which is essentially the target audience for IASW. The message is made to where even small children can understand the concept of world peace. Give guests an opportunity to learn greetings from other languages or learn about other cultures in a fun, whimsical way.

Some inspiration for possible aesthetics for the Crafted version of the land.

World landmarks (both natural and man made) built out of paper craft, origami, knit yarn sculptures, etc scattered about. The craft styles can represent the part of the world the landmark is from. Mix in some oversized classic toys from around the world.

Paper Boats flowing through a river that winds through the land with wishes for peace from children around the world written on them.

Mostly walkthroughs, flats, playgrounds, and kiddie rides, but with a new version of Small World to anchor it.

'64 World's Fair revival ideas are always fun. There's been so many revivals/updated versions/spiritual successors to Great Moments of Mr. Lincoln between Disneyland's one, Hall of Presidents, and American Adventure that it would be interesting to try to find a new take on it. '64 World's Fair themed land isn't as fun to me just because I feel like it's been done. Either the Chicago Square idea or the Utopia Epcot idea are more interesting versions of a World's Fair type land to me. Chicago especially interested me as a direction for it because it covers a lot of ideas we've discussed, but in a way that feels very unique. Though, admittedly, the Small World tie for Chicago is the loosest of all the themed. Not that I think that matters too much. We aren't competing against a different team, so how good out project is or well it fits the theme really doesn't matter.

I'm good with whatever, but right now either the Crafted Small World land or Chicago Square have my vote.

I didn’t even think about origami or yarn! That’s a great idea!

Forgive me for taking so long to post here... just so we're clear, can ANYBODY on the team help with this or just the current "Heads of the Households"?

Alright, well I was day-drinking as part of a Brew at the Zoo event with some of my former colleagues and now I’m hungover, exhausted, and haven’t looked at brainstorming since I went to bed last night, so keep up the great work and I’ll catch up tomorrow!

Oh, very nice! Honestly, between Chicago Square and a Crafted Small World, I think I'm leaning more now to the Crafted Small World.

I know the theme in our castle park has been leaning towards "mature" and this could clash a little with that, but an area that is geared towards smaller kids (even more than Fantasyland) would not hurt. A "crafted" aesthetic would offer something really distinctive to guests, something to really separate this land from the others and let it stand out on its own legs. More than that is the potential in the spirit of a Crafted Small World. For those little kids, we can help to impart a wonder about the greater world, grant them a glimpse into cultures from around the globe. Give them something to connect them to the world around them.

Casting my ballot. Personally I prefer the Chicago World’s Square the most, so that gets my official vote.

However I am also quite fond of the Papercraft idea, and if enough players feel most passionate about it we could do something incredible. The homemade artwork could be amazing!

So, it looks like we have four main options being discussed

  • Crafted Small World (possibly with some light World Showcase Elements added)
  • 1964 World's Fair with other Disney attractions from that fair revived here too
  • Chicago Square and the 1893 World's Fair blending world unity and history and innovation
  • Utopian Future with some Epcot vibes and plenty of greenery
I think we should try to pick a theme today. If we can, start with an outline of a ride line up. But main focus is trying to get a theme settled.

Personally, my pick would be Crafted, but Chicago square is a close second.
