I was reading "Since the World Began" for the 90th time and it says that NBC aired a 90 minute special in 1971 about the grand opening of WDW. Does anyone know if that's available anywhere?

It sure would be cool to see.

I have a copy of a grand opening celebration for the Magic Kingdom that the Disney Channel aired years ago as part of "Walt Disney Presents" (I wish the Disney Channel would go back to that type of entertainment! If I have to see Raven one more time...). I don't remember it being 90 minutes, but it may have been. They could have done two different specials, as well. I don't think they've ever released these types of shows on DVD or video. It's a shame. I'm sure there are lots of grand openings I've missed over the years. I'd love to buy them all.

On Disney-Central there is audio of the entire MK opening special but not video. Its still a good listen. And I think I have the Disney-MGM Studios grand opening special but I am not sure. It is either the grand opening or the making of the Disney-MGM Studios, I will check. But hey since were naming specials here, does anyone happen to know if the EPCOT opening special is available anywhere? I watched this a bunch of times on the old Disney Channel and stupidly never taped it :hammer: .

If you have it I would love to see it. My parents recorded it for me when I was a kid but it has gotten lost. I've looked and looked and looked and couldn't find it. I did find an old Mickey's Birthday special. The one where nobody knows who Mickey is. Excellent old special. Had the cast of Cheers on it which was hilarious. Why don't they do TV specials like that anymore? They used to be so well made.

I saw that and loved those old clips. Martin does such a great job on those history videos.

Thank you - more on the way too!

I`ve the Disney Special WDW Opening somewhere (Julie Andrews presents) - not the opening as such, more a tour. Still very interesting, but not the best quality. I`ve also the EPCOT Disney Special (again more of a tour) and also the proper EPCOT Center opening / SSE Dedication. I also have the proper Disney MGM gala opening special. And I won`t post any of them...

Only kidding! I`ve been meaning to post all of these for ages at #disney central IRC (I only recently posted Disneylands 30th on the web - that took me 20 years  ) but I`ve got more tributes to get finished and up; I start a large contract in a month that will seriously curtail my PC fun time until the spring. Tributes like The Living Seas, Star Tours, Impressions de France and The Thundermountains, plus Armageddon & a SM:M2 simulation from DLP. Then I`ll try to squeeze in some of these openings. The things you do for fun...

There are, in fact, two specials, both of which were on the Disney Channel as part of the "Walt Disney Presents" show - The Grand Opening of Walt Disney World and Welcome to the World. The former, with commercials would indeed have been 90 minutes; the latter was 60 with commercials. I have them both, as well as a number of other specials (I've been taping these since 1983 and am only now starting to convert them to DVD). I'm always interested in trading, so if you'd like a copy let me know. It might take me a week or two, but I can do it.

On the subjects of TV specials, I have (or had) a tape that had the making of Captain EO, Ernest goes to Splash Mountain, the Making of the Disney/MGM Studios and I believe the Start Tours Preview. I can no longer find the tape!!! If any of you can point me in the direction of where to find these specials it would be great.

Didn't Disney do a show for the opening of Animal Kingdom where they showed a family traveling in an RV to Florida for the opening? Or did I dream that??? :hammer:

CT - you have a new best friend (but you already knew that  )

Marty Mouse; The Making of Captain EO is floating around Disney Central somewhere. There`s 2 versions - a lower sized bad quality short one, and a much bigger filesized one with better quality & the full show on it.
