‘We’re putting people who are visiting Disney in danger.’ Firefighters say they are short-handed at theme park

I always have terrible thoughts when I pass the fire station near Epcot and think to the stories from the book 'The Mouse Betrayed' about the various methods they used in 'hazing' new recruits. Wasn't a pleasant read and cost them a lot of money in an out of court settlement many years ago.
That brutal hazing of the new guys in the book was over the top craziness.

…I love all salacious behind the scenes expose’ when it comes to Disney in Florida…

except that one
I felt really sorry for the guy, left the navy to become a fire fighter and gets sexually abused like that as an 'initiation'. The poor guy reported what had happened to the lead and was basically told "Boys will be boys". As he'd been in the forces he was used to the chain of command and so didn't think he could go higher.

It's a good book though there's quite a lot of 'filler' when they ran out of stuff to be outraged over, a good read though.

It’s been along time (I recommend Team Rodent and Project Future as required reading for an understanding of Florida)…but I don’t disagree with you here…

…but the book was written with a 90’s American political tilt that leads directly to the vile state Los Estados Unidos is struggling in today.

Thanks for that, might check them out. Whilst we don't always agree on things, I have no animosity towards you. As such, have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year 🎅

The author of Team Rodent is off base when he said what used to be Gorda Cay which is now Castaway Cay for DCL guests is now a fake island. At this point anything is better than the infamous dark past of the island of the 1970s, early 1980s when the island was a stopover point for small aircraft flying from South America to refuel , rest before bringing their cargo to South Florida. What still remains on Castaway is the small aircraft runway that the guest tram takes one to get to the adult beach. Those grilled fish sandwiches the cast serve on the island are awesome!

It’s been awhile…but I don’t remember too much commentary about “la isla coca” that you’re describing…merely that it had a past in the trade. The Bahamas have like 700 islands and are a golf shot from Miami…a lot of those islands were used “in the trade” before Crockett and Tubbs busted them up 😎

Same

team rodent is by noted south Florida contrarian Carl Hiassen…Longtime newspaper man and novelist.

project future is much more academic and is the best written account on a fairly objective level of the working behind the scenes between Disney and the Florida/Orlando governments that allowed the wdw complex to be built as it is today. That one is excellent.

enjoy and Frohlich Wiehnachten ☃️

So other than worrying about being involved in a random fight, extortion through high prices, and rickety space mountain rides.. we now have to worry about a lack of immediate emergency assistance?

Immediate emergency assistance is a slippery slope. In my area, firefighters work and live at the fire station on their scheduled shifts and can be at service call in a matter of minutes. Other areas where my friends and family live, there is volunteer firefighters so on a 911call, the firefighters still have to drive to their station , gear up and then respond to the call.

I live next to Phoenix and we have plenty of police / fire around. One of my non emergency calls a few years ago (neighbors faulty smoke alarm was going off, no signs of fire but in my defense it was pitch black in the condo) was answered within 5 minutes.

PD pulled up literally the moment the operator finished our call.

I’d say that’s an oversimplification haha. Many jurisdictions across the nation are dealing with challenges for a variety of reasons. What makes this different IMO is that most jurisdictions don’t have the resources that Disney has in order to deal with these types of challenges.

Disney? Resources?? They’re teetering on the brink of collapse, haven’t you heard? Only 33% of guests have bought Genie+. I hear $lappie has had to cut back to only 5 spa treatments per week, plus dining at only 4-star restaurants. Not sure how much longer he can survive at this rate.

😉

In all seriousness, they need to make sure they have adequate emergency resources. It takes one incident that gets bad before it explodes in their face.

So the fire fighter thinks occupancy is too high for the number of first responders?

Sounds like something he needs to take up with the Fire Marshall

There is no question that Phoenix has plenty of police for the necessary reasons.

No one is saying the buildings are overcrowded to the point of being dangerous.

What they are saying is that given the tremendous amount of sprawl which has overtaken WDW in the past 30 years, first responder staffing has not been increased to match.

If the population of your community increases by 50%, don't you think you would need to bring on more people providing critical services?

You’re right, the company’s troubles are clearly the commoners fault 🤣🤣

What he said.

also, the fire marshal is part of the fire department, so the union in effect is speaking for the inspectors as well.
