Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Which is what Disney did previously with Wish.

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

I personally think in a world in which COVID never happened, Raya and the Last Dragon would have been a big box office hit. The visuals really wowed me on the big screen, but most never got that experience.

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I'm not sure what you are talking about, I gave Wish a pretty balanced review last year. Here is what I initially posted in November 2023 after I first saw the film: Upon reflection I probably think Wish is more of a 6/10 film than a 7/10, but it's still not the disaster people act like it is.

I love No one Mourns the Wicked, Dancing Through LIfe, Defying Gravity, As Long as You're Mine, No Good Deed and For Good. The Wizard and I, What is this Feeling, Popular and I'm Not That Girl are all pretty good. I could take or leave the rest of the songs. Hamilton and Les Miserables are...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

The top three are the only ones I actively dislike, the rest I just think are weaker compared to Disney's other movies. I actually think Chicken Little tells a better story than Moana 2, but I dislike it more because the movie is just so mean-spirited and the animation is ugly. It's just a...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

If I were to rank the bottom 15 Disney movies (from Worst to best) 1. Home on the Range 2. Chicken Little 3. Saludos Amigos 4. Ralph Breaks the Internet 5. Make Mine Music 7. Melody Time 8. Moana 2 9. Dinosaur 10. Strange World 11. Bolt 12. Fun and Fancy Free (Mickey and Beanstalk is great...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

I just can't agree. While Wish was indeed a disappointment, I think it's better than most people on this forum give it credit for. It's treated like an unforgivable abomination when it's really just a kind of generic/bland movie that relies too much on the Disney formula without bringing...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Wish is better than Moana 2 by a mile. I don't know if that's really a compliment to Wish or more of an indictment of Moana 2, but after leaving Moana 2 I started to think of Wish much more fondly. I'll take "This Wish" (even with its nonsensical "throwing caution to every warning sign"...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

I hate to admit it, but Wish is indeed the stronger movie in almost every aspect except animation (credit where credit is due, Moana 2 looks stunning). While the lyrics were occasionally awful, I still remember the tune of most of the Wish songs and the general story pretty well, and I haven't...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I suspect Moana 2 — even with mixed reception — will continue to dominate at the box office until the double whammy of Sonic and Mufassa knock it down a few pegs. I think Wicked has a chance to leg out like the Greatest Showman throughout the holiday season. It will probably do well until early...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Original movies either were critical and commercial duds (Strange World, Wish) or were financial flops due to being sent straight to streaming (Soul, Luca, Turning Red) or people deciding to wait for streaming (Raya, Encanto). Even something like Elemental merely "broke even" rather than become...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Well, Disney clearly made the right FINANCIAL decision by switching the film from a series to a movie, as they will likely gain at least a billion dollars. My frustration continues to be that they should have never attempted the TV series to begin with, and Moana 2 should have been conceived as...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It was a commercial success, but the poor reception would have prevented it from launching a successful franchise. I'd imagine a sequel would have a similar drop from Alice in Wonderland (2010) to Alice: Through the Looking Glass.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Oz the Great and Powerful had some good ideas and stunning visuals, but the TERRIBLE performances from James Franco and Mila Kunis destroyed the whole thing. Kunis can be a good actress, but she was miscast, whereas Franco simply didn't even seem like he was trying.
  15. Ghost93

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

I think the disappointment stems from the first movie being largely viewed as "great" and people wishing it was of a similar quality. We shouldn't settle for "it was okay" or "it wasn't that bad!" I suspect had Musker and Clements and Lin Manuel Miranda been involved, we'd be having a very...

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

I think the Cinemascore will be most revealing of how audiences feel about the movie. Only the most passionate of fans or haters post a review on Rotten Tomatoes. I'll get around to seeing Moana 2, but with the middling reviews I might wait for crowds to die down and just rewatch Wicked this...
  17. Ghost93

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Half of the direct-to-video sequels were just rehashes of the first film where the child learned the same lesson as the parent. At least the new Disney sequels are avoiding that (so far). I recall the voiceover for the Little Mermaid II "Ten years ago, the Little Mermaid dreamed of life on...
  18. Ghost93

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Moana 2 seems to be fluctuating between 68 and 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. I suspect a strong opening weekend, but think its legs might be hurt by the middling reviews. I think it will still be a juggernaut at the box office, but it might not reach the heights it could have had Disney started this...
  19. Ghost93

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

While I agree, I think the other lesson Hollywood should learn from Wicked's success is to hire professional singers when making musical adaptations. We should never have to endure another Russell Crowe in Les Miserables again! 🤣

    Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Almost every early reaction from Moana 2 — even from those who liked it — have said the music is inferior to the first film and that Lin-Manuel Miranda's presence is missed. Disney REALLy should have brought him back. I suspect the only reason they did it was to avoid backlash for...
