I was sold on trackless or at the very least the illusion of vehicle autonomy. Hmm.

If not trackless let's hope it's hidden. Maybe it's some type of magnetic guidance system with an embedded rail (under the concrete surface) that monitors positioning? Vehicles are centered along the rail, if they deviate too much the vehicle stops?

If it is indeed tracked, I'm surprised. There doesn't seem to be anything groundbreaking here if that is the case.
Not ready to discount it just yet but at the back of my mind there's that possibility that belief it just wasn't attainable and they pivoted for reasons X or Y. Maybe, maybe not. Hoping for the best.

I agree, if it is tracked (visible), color me unimpressed.

I actually couldn't care less if it's tracked or trackless if it doesn't affect the ride experience. If that's going to be the same regardless, being trackless wouldn't really do anything to improve the ride. It would just be tech for tech's sake.

I'm with you, it's mostly cosmetic. If the track looks like garbage, fair enough. But it's a ride following a set track either way, there's no suggestion of alternative routing.

Maybe the cosmetics will be bad though, balanced against reliability sans track, which I cannot imagine would be more reliable.

You’re right. Problem is, I have done this ride before. Twice. Test track. RSR. Just something else to stand in line for 60+ minutes. Great experience. Lines or buying merch. That’s what they want.

I don't feel like combing through 400+ pages, so maybe I'm conjuring a straw man, but I think it's less that people really wanted a trackless ride, more that when people expressed how upset they were at losing TSI and the river, the supposed cool new outdoor trackless tech was pushed as such an exciting new experience that it would be worth/lessen the sting of losing them.

But now we know there's no new ride tech and it's just a Cars ride in Frontierland where we used to have the river.

Are there tracked outdoor rides that follow a rugged terrain and therefore provide an experience closer to Indiana Jones or Dinosaur as opposed to Test Track?

Yeah, I'd much rather have a ride that operates reliably with a visible track than one that has no track but struggles operationally.

Unless, as you allude, a trackless version would involve vehicles moving around each other/going on different paths (which I'm not sure would happen on a ride like this regardless), I don't see any benefit to going trackless.

Is this anything? Should we believe this, or is Josh LH just talking out of his butt?

Considering who he is, yes, I'd say he's talking out the back.

That being said, I could see this project conceivably not happening. Disney is already stingy with costs and with recent lower attendance and a possible deep recession hurtling towards us, I don't think the project is far enough along that it couldn't be cancelled.

This is a model test but it seems that the ride will likely be tracked

Looks familiar…

It’s happened before: Rhine River at Epcot actually saw the queue/load building constructed before it was cancelled.

And let’s not forget the Play Pavilion getting the axe despite already having WoL’s infrastructure just sitting there ready for something to go in it.

If I remember correctly I recall hearing a rumour that they had 50% of the Play Pavilion's sets installed before the rumour broke that the project had been cancelled. Not sure if this is true or not, but again, Disney is willing to course correct if they see fit.

As for Cars, I still think it's going ahead. Only WDW purists are bullish on the ROA staying, and although Disney could expand Frontierland's footprint to build a Cars miniland, I still think they want the ROA gone, citing allegedly extremely high maintenance costs, and the comparatively small sect of WDW's audience that actually want the ROA saved.
